Should Fill The Floor

Hi People, I;m new here so dont be too harsh!!! Anyway I am based in the midlands and DJing at a regular soul do. There are a few records which I think should be floor fillers but they just bomb. Does anyone else have this experience either DJing or just dancing where a tune hits which you think should be a stormer but just empties the floor!!! My one is 'My Sugar Baby' - Connie Clarke which I absolutely love but doesnt seem to work, Cheers, John

20 second rule ain't a bad benchmark. Nobody got up/ most sat down after that long, you may as well just switch it & take the hit on your judgement/ego.

That said, if you've got a small venue & need to get rid of a few to tax those waiting, so as to to break-even, I'd recommend a string of flops .

great record Grant .. fav of mine , but is one of those that regular has that effect , but played at right time , right venue, will pack the floor .. funny old game aint it lol

odd that connie clark emptied the floor in the east mids .. sell the "£700 +" ish record and buy something else ? ....

Steve does it regularly with Jack Montgomery-Baby why don't you take a chance..

Well after my last Saturday's 'performance' at 'A.Nother' venue, I'd like to ask the exact same question, but in the complete opposite manner

Top Tip - Give up D.Jing, it really can be sh*t at times .....

People just can't keep up to some of these great records anymore!

Thats why mid tempo shufflers fill the floor.

I still love the uptempo records, but can't dance all night to them anymore!

jez, in my opinion it was absolutley hammered, like 3 times a night @ the ritz and kings + every oldies night, around 10 years ago, I certainly got sick of it, great tune it may be, just very well aired, unlike my draws! lol.

Great thread this, if as a DJ you have the ability to think for yourself and not just simply want to play the same sounds as all the alleged premier league jocks then you will experience the tumbleweed effect occasionally.

Last Saturday I played Betty Fikes & The Passions "Prove it to me" on Southbound to a totally empty floor, if you have any claims about being interested in soul music you couldnt help but be over whelmed by such a soulful piece of dance music, but to pay at the door of a Northern Soul night and not dance to this is totally bewildering.

Actually I can forgive Len as his little legs wouldnt move that fast anyway

I've sinse had a P.M from John (The thread starter) and know what event he is refering to, so to answer the original question - I think it's because your event isn't a 'run of the mill' soul event. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think it's more of a 'town' event, so the records you have named are most probably unfamiliar to your clientele that's all.

As Brian pointed out, no matter how good a record is, some folk won't dance if they don't know it - depends where you go really.

If ya clear the floor, don't have a panic attack mate

Speaking as a 50+ punter, I have to pace myself when I'm dancing and just 'cos I don't dance to a record doesn't mean I don't know or don't like it...its usually because I'm taking a break to get my breath back.

Went to an event recently when the DJ got a bit knarked 'cos a couple of great records were met with apparent disinterest by the floor but afterwards, I heard the group next to me comment on how good his set was, they were just too busy catching up with each other and having a jar to get off their bums at that particular time.

Your right Len, its not a usual soul event, we have a ska type DJ and a funk guy. Basically because it is a kind of town venue we are trying to get the punters in and introduce them to the soul.

Its early days but going in the right direction, The people who come in for the ska are generally right up for some Northern, and then the younger crowd who move to the funk stuff are getting the soul thing.

You can see that everyone loves the tunes but a bit hesitant on hitting the floor. More ´decoy dancers´ needed methinks

maybe those non soulies are a little self concious about how to dance to northern!....ska is basically jumping around or hopping from one lag to another....slower funk and rnb are both a lot easier to dance to for those not so experienced with northern and its quicker beat and breaks..
