Did Jerry Butler just take the Ice Man name from his 1968 album " Ice Man Cometh " or was it a nickname before that??? why the name Ice Man??

From memory I read a while back that he was given the nickname Ice Man by a radio DJ.....................the album came later.

I can only presume it was because of his personality maybe?

Carol :thumbsup:

I'm sure, many many years ago I read In Gerri Hershey's 'Sweet Soul music' book that Jerry used to do ice sculpture.

Or I could be talking bollocks, it's anyones guess.

Regards

Jim.

If Jim talking bollocks :D , sounds a good enough reason indeed???

he was dubbed "the iceman" by WDAS philadelphia disc jockey, georgie woods, whilst performing in a philadelphia theatre, according to wikipedia.....i think id agree that he must have been considered a cool customer with such a stylish voice.

From last week's Washington Post;

How Jerry Butler got his handle

February 15, 2013

Fritz Hahn’s suggestion in the Feb. 10 Going Out Guide to take one’s “blues loving” special someone to see “guitar legend” Jerry “The Iceman” Butler on Valentine’s Day probably did not result in the evening anticipated.

Butler does not play guitar, nor is he a blues singer. His nickname, bestowed by a disc jockey some five decades ago, refers to his mellow and soulful singing style that was dubbed “so cool.”

Just one more comment Stevie. We were lucky enough to see Jerry 2 days after Valentines day at Blues Alley - he did 4 nights there. Absolutely fantastic show. He's in his 70's now and obviously all the tones in his voice aren't as powerful as he was all those years ago but still a great charismatic performer. Opened with "Cooling out" and closed with a beautiful "For Your Precious Love". Great tight small proper band (no synths etc) with the added bonus of brother Billy on guitar.

The only was you'll see him now is over there. He doesn't fly and didn't come over to Italy to receive an award he got at the Porretta Fest a couple of years ago.
