With the topic currently running regarding Mr M's top tunes got me thinking about the role Mr M's played in the birth of the revial scene. My visits to the Casino were limited to oldies nights due to being 16 and the only way of getting from our part of Co Durham to Wigan was by a coach organised by an old geezer of maybe 25 or 26! who disliked the music such Love Hustle being played on Saturday nights Oldies it was! But as M's was an oldies overflow from day one and judging by the replies to the earlier post perhaps our love of oldies began years before the birth of the weekenders

Not early on Steve. I never heard much in the way of oldies in the main room up to '75. In fact, now I think about it, I vaguely remember Dave Evison doing some oldie slots in the main room but I can't remember from when. What year did Mr M's open?

Think M's opened on the 1st anniversary as an overflow room....

Probably in the minority, but hated it in there....

  • I can't remember exactly when Ms started but i think it was in first couple of months after niters started (October/November 73). Kenny Spence and Allan Cane used to handle it as well as playing in Beechcomber before and after
  • as i remember first few weeks Martyn Ellis doing a short oldies spot in main room in the morning (around 6-7) but Dave Evison took over at some time

I didn't go til 76, so am sure you are right. By 76 though it was 50% oldies. Evison was of course 100% oldies.

Think M's opened pre-75 and remember DE doing the oldies hour at 6 O'Clock downstairs from 75.

Think the internet has as much to do with the revival as anything.

Don't know if M's has specifically influenced the revival but maybe the familiarity with the stuff played in there leads people to want to associate with it when returning to or discovering the current scene?
