Citizen P
Just a thought on this, without entering the debate on the lay out of the SC website, what if the promoters quote the attendance numbers from their last event in each new post? Some may submit bogus figures I know but, armed with that information and a look at the DJ sets in the "events : playlists" section would give you a better idea of what to expect or what went on at a particular event? The numbers thing is , possibly, a good point. But who is going to be honest enough to give a true figure ??? And again, had 150 in may look good-- but not if its the size of an aircraft hanger. Playlists from previous and knowing who DJ'ed should tell you more about if it's your cuppa or not, to be sure. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Playlists from previous and knowing who DJ'ed should tell you more about if it's your cuppa or not, to be sure. the playlists, like you rightly say, are a very good watermark, weather its worth attending...anything in particular, regardless of the venue. they seem to come in fits and starts on here as well though they give give food for thought so,...if the nonposting promotors/pundits dont also give an indication of the flavour and strength of the music, then they're doing theirselves no favours at all. this is where the leading venues corner the market....the calender's competitiveness that we talk about, is relatively inconspicuous if the truths known, yet the calender still frequently burgeons.i would have thought that 150 is a bloody good pull for someone anyway, given all the circumstances. Souledtrafford
Perhaps one of the reasons for the lack of feedback and event details from various venues is because of the stick that may follow. I help run a small 'Soul Club' and we had our second event at a local pub on Saturday night. Admission was free, but 'ticket only' and there were around 130 through the door, which was about right for the size of the venue. Kicked off at 8.00 and finished around 1.30 (should have been 1.00) and there were people dancing from before 8.30 until the end. Great I hear you say. But.............. we played cd's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is where the grief might set in. Not everyone who attends is into the music, but they like to dance and if you can get a room full of people filling the floor to 'Emperor of My Baby's Heart', 'Hand It Over', 'You Can Do It', etc etc then there should be no problem. These people do not care if it is on ovo or a pot lid. They are there for a good night and that is what we look to do. It also gets people interested and more knowledgeable about the sounds. So, perhaps there are others, whose nights are via cd's and they do not want a backlash because of this, so no mention of how their latest 'soul night' went. 2 Link to comment Social source share

Spacehopper
fair play to you but to be honest i dont think you would have got to much grief even on here for playing cds at a free pub gig...but thats another 4 page thread! ... i cant see the point in bullshittin about numbers etc....if you know people who were there and theyre on here reading it theyre gonna think youre a bit of a twat...i always put correct numbers up..we average about 100 normally a bit over...sadly this month theres so much on im pretty sure numbers will be down but we will still have a good night and the music will be tops with the guests we have...and if numbers are down thats what i will be saying on the write up sunday dean Link to comment Social source share

Len
...and if numbers are down thats what i will be saying on the write up sunday dean "Numbers were low" - Is the worse way anyone can ever start a 'look backs' post. It's best not to mention it at all, and focus on other aspects of the night. Spacehopper
i suppose thats why i could never be a salesman!...or be rich ...i tell it like it is...i might not put 'low' though, just down on last month...and to be honest even on the nights when the numbers are down a bit we always have a good night... i appreciate everyone who comes to our night especially those that travel with so many things to choose from...and yes maybe it might put some people off but its not just about numbers is it...most people will know our guests and can see our playlists 1 Link to comment Social source share
Popular Post Jumpinjoan
I've had some of the best nights ever where numbers could be considered not great (to the non attending) So (for me) quoting numbers through the door is irrelevant and doesn't give an accurate reflection of a night. Each and every night is unique and some venues just lend themselves to a good time regardless of whether it's packed to the rafters or not The DJ's playing and the people who go is all I need in order for me to know whether it's my kind of night or not 4 Link to comment Social source share
Souledtrafford
Attendance figures can be stretched a bit, just to make it look good, but we know most of the people who got the tickets, if they were there and also how many we printed. In a small venue, a rough head count can be done. As others mentioned previously, it is not the number of people who were there, but what the dj's play that make the night. If the people are dancing all night then the dj's are doing their job and the people are enjoying themselves, they will come back the next time. Back Street Blue
The reference to the attendance was meant to be in response to the original post seeking info from promoters to help guage what's on offer at their events and how successful in terms of numbers they have been. Totally agree that you don't have to have a full house to have a good time. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Souledtrafford
Some do seem to judge the night by how many through the door, as their ego seems to be more important than what the dj's play and if the punters enjoy themselves. I always think that numbers on the dance floor are more important than numbers through the door. Link to comment Social source share

Chalky
Looking at he comments there are venues that look quite busy promotion wise. But then again it is clear what the event is and where. Some events having virtually nothing in the header, soul night, charity night, Atb soul? Tells you nothing about who, what or where. So maybe the promoters should take a look at how they do things and use a bit more imagination in the header to make their event stand out? 1 Link to comment Social source share

This isn't aimed at you 'Soul Trafford', but I think some simply 'judge others by their own standards'. All these 'ego's' must be blo*dy huge if promoting gives them that 'fix' because in the main, promoting is an absolute thankless task - Anyone that does it for that reason would soon get bored surely. To take it a little further. Too often Stafford had in 'low numbers'. It doesnt stop it being one of the most loved allnighters over the years. Or one of the most influential. And knowing this might often be the case, it didn't stop myself or my group of friends attending virtually every one. Souledtrafford
Maybe you should ask yourself why? You seem to be the one reluctant to post and then slag of other promoters with an ego problem? Not reluctant to post. Our venue only holds 120-130 comfortable and we can give out that number of tickets in the two or three weeks prior to the event, so there is little need to advertise the event 'nationwide', as local advertising does the job. As for a post after the event, because we only play cd's and a mixture of northern, modern and motown I wouldn't want to bore anyone with a report on a soul night that would mean nothing to the majority of people on this site. I could mention that I played Mildred Clark, the Ster-phonics, William Bollinger, but I don't think it would be of any great interest. Link to comment Social source share

Because it is only a small scale local 'night' that we run and as explained previously, the size of venue etc, I never considered posting the event on 'SS'. Many of those who attend would probably think Wigan Casino was a gambling den, but a few of us are into the music (perhaps not to the level of some on 'SS') and only set out to find a venue with a good sound system where we could play northern/modern/motown every now and again and attempt to get others interested, or at least enjoy a night of good music. I play as big a mix as I can get away with, pushing in a few unfamiliar tunes to the locals and having only done the two nights, we feel that we are getting somewhere. More so, when someone requests 'Girl Across the Street'. Link to comment Social source share

Yeh...careful there, we're slipping into 'that thing' again ......The point is - no matter what sort of night you put on, it's helpful to 'someone' that a full description is put on the 'events'. Amongst other information - what you play, the type of Soul Music whether it be on Vinyl, C.D's or MP3's - which is your choice whether people like it or not. This is where the full description comes in - then people can make an informative choice as to whether to attend or not. As has been said before on this thread - Most people have 'found their level', meaning that they know where they want to go now. I attend places of which I respect both the Promoter (s) and the D.J's they have playing at any given time, because with that in the 'equation' I'm odds on to have a good night. The full description on the 'events' (in the main) is for the benefit of people trying somewhere for the first time, and it's important that it's there as a matter of fairness to the customers at least. In saying this (with ref to places I attend) Just lately, I've been enjoying places that are so 'over ground', they're 'underground' All the best, Len Edited March 4, 2013 by LEN Link to comment Social source share
Len
I was just browsing the front page, and a thought came to me with ref this thread. Going back to the point made on why (since the site change) some of us are now no longer ‘drawn’ to ‘other’ events threads - We established that before, we would see someone we knew (or interested us) and would usually ‘click’ onto whatever they were writing. Anyway, my suggestion would be to highlight the names that appear on the front page when someone makes a post in a really bright colour. I don’t notice who’s posted unless I’m following a thread, I think this would draw people to threads that they may not be aware of - Any thread really, but for the purpose of this discussion, events threads, then maybe creating that ‘buzz’ again for some events. Just a suggestion. All the best, Len Link to comment Social source share
