Guest Brooky Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Bowie's 'Diamond Dogs'.......I had all of Bowie's early 70's albums but when DD came out I just loved the Sci-Fi, Apocalyptic aspect....not his greatest work I think most would accept but tracks like 1984, Big Brother and We Are The Dead.....set my 15 yr old imagination off!!! LOL!!! Ironically, even though I wasn't into Soul Music at all until mid '75...we had the compilation album 'Superbad'...background music to doing homework....grew to love nearly every track on that album.....
Smudger Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 This one for me also What's going on and Stevie Wonder Where i'm coming from
Steve Foran Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Slade Alive David Bowie - Aladdin Sane Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (Sounds Superb label cheapo compilation) Reggae Chartbusters Volume 1 The Trojan Story all 1971-73 except Tops which I think might have been 74 That 4 Tops LP is superb. Davebanks Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Surprised no one has mentioned Backtrack 6, as it was that album that opened many of our eyes and ears to the joys of Detroit soul away from Motown. The thrill of hearing those artists; Parliaments, Precisions and Al Kent for the first time on that album started the search for more more more, that still carries on today. Dave Banks 2
Pete S Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 The Isley Brothers, the one with the three of them in orange suits and the one on the left has the campest pose ever, Was this a budget album, Regal Starline or MFP, I had that and nearly wore it out, I hear A Symphony was my favourite track, I had a light blue dansette type record player and wrote ISLEY BROTHERS in massive letters on the lid in marker pen, got into trouble for that of my parents. But what an album.

The thrill of hearing those artists; Parliaments, Precisions and Al Kent for the first time on that album started the search for more more more, that still carries on today. Dave Banks I didn't mention any of those because it would be a lie to say they were never off my turntable, I understand why people older than me would relate to that album but by the time I was of LP buying age, that had been deleted.

Modernsoulsucks Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 When I was 17 it was a very good year. Sorry got distracted. "This is Sue" but I do remember getting Chi-Lites with "Coldest Days..." and "Inner City Blues" back in 72 [was it?] Played it to death. ROD

But what an album. Yes mate, just had a look at it (not the original one), its says EMI Regal top left and Star Line top right. Cheers Steve

Pete S Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 This This Or, This Oh dear I can't remember now, it must have been the one at the bottom, definitely not the top two. Not in 1974 anyway. 1
Middleman Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 This This Or, This The one I have is the bottom one but with the EMI Regal and Star Line logos on it. Cheers Steve 1

Wilxy Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 First album I ever purchased was a Reggae compilation on MFP I believe, closely followed by the Tighten up Lp's in order.....First Soul album was also the starline Isley brothers outing.....Very Happy Days indeed
Lenny Harkins Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Never Mind The Bollocks when I was 11 and though Northern Soul was for plebs with Wrangler flares in later years , The Hesitations, Soul Superman
Guest ScooterNik Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Various albums over a period of time. Starting with Siouxsie & The Banshees 'The Scream', Boomtown Rats 'A Tonic For The Troops', The Jam 'Setting Sons' (The only Jam album I can listen to these days), Secret Affair albums in order of release - I still think they matured as they drifted away from the mod scene, The Specials debut, then I discovered Northern: Out On The Floor Tonight (Inferno), Floorshakers (Kent), a second hand copy of Casino Soul Classics and the first four 'Northern Soul Story' LPs. I loved those.
Paddy Ferry Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 The one I have is the bottom one but with the EMI Regal and Star Line logos on it. Cheers Steve That's the one alright and he defo looks suspect.

Joefromupnorth Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 For me the most played 75ish and crammed with so many absolutely top tracks "Jumping at the Go Go"
Jaco Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 For two different reasons Millie Jacksons early LPs and the Levine compiled Solid Soul Sensations ( the Sceptre, Wand stuff) Me too, Dave as far as Milly Jackson was concerned. Completely worn out the vinyl playing them constantly.
SHEFFSOUL Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 In the days when we only used record players to listen to soul music, you could leave the disc stacking arm open and the LP below would play repetitively. In our house in the late 60's the Temptations Gettin ready album took up residence, fending off me Mums Cliff Richard and my sisters Herman Hermits! What 60's or 70's album monopolized your player? Later on the Impressions - "Young Mods" album would be the backdrop to many a night in helping a "friend" with her homework! Dave Banks EXILE ON MAIN ST-ROLLING STONES..STILL DOES..
Guest CARL D Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 'Pinky and Perky sing Nursey Rhymes' circa '72.....well i was only 4!!! Classic stomper that grand old duke of york!;-)
Britishbarry Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 For me it was always the Isley Brothers - This old heart of mine , mainly because at the time I bought it the single of the title track was unavailable as was, I guess ill always love you ,although I bought it for these two tracks, as luck would have it the whole album is comprised of great material. 1
JON WILLIS Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Used to listen to some of the RICHARD PRIOR albums... Still listen to them now when I get time.. Always used to put tapes together, used to listen to them.... Happy Days

Andyj Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Isaac Hayes - Shaft soundtrack was the LP I got with my first record player one Christmas. Then: Capital Soul Casino The Grapevine LPs - This Is Northern Soul etc... all had a good run. But one I always played was a boot LP I bought from Wigan on the BEE label I think it was, yellow. No idea what happened to it but it was a brilliant selection of tunes. No idea who made it either. This would be around 1980. Think I have this album, can't remember where it came from but I had to send away for it and it came with just the white inner sleave. Still got it! Album that I played repeatedly was probably Solid Soul Sensations on Pye, this got me hooked on Northern (along with Great Disco Demands) still have both of these also!
Tezza Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Cat Stevens - Catch Bull at Four Rory Gallagher - Blueprint Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde David Bowie - Space Oddity All my Mums Sam Cooke Albums 1

Md Records Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 First time I went to the U.S. in 1986, found 2 copies of the Freddy Butler album, in a store in Albany, NY. I knew about the "Give Me Lots Of Lovin" track, but had no idea that the whole album was superb. It never left the player for about 6 months after I got home Des Parker 1
Tank Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Fondly remember those Motown Chartbusters and Tighten LP's thanks to my older brother and his mates initially. First LP I owned was Four Tops 'Main Street People' bought for me as a christmas present. Already familiar with their Motown classics I wondered niavely at the time why this was on ABC? Loved (and still do) "I Just Can't Get You Out Of Mind".
Guest Matt Male Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Everyone seemed to have Capital Soul Casino, but I don't think I've seen it for sale anywhere, there are none on ebay or Gemm. Where are they all?
