I've recently stumbled across a few brilliant (and rare) US Deep Soul 45's.

In the opinion of Soul Source forumees....where is considered to be the best place to offer these 45's for sale?

I'll probably eBay them a few at a time if folk think that's the best place but i thought i'd check first.

Got some killer rarities and there's also a lot of quality Sweet/Group Soul and some Funk bits in there too!

It could be that i offer them on here first before sticking them on the 'bay.

Be interesting to see what people think is the best way forward?

Cheers

Steve

btw I won't be doing a list but I'd accept wants lists though

It seems to me that the market for the top-end deep soul tunes has effectively collapsed in recent times. Benny Latimore on Blade sold for about £100 on ebay last week: ten years ago that figure would have been more like £5-600. I bought a mint George Hughley on Fairlane for $25 last week: in 1990 I paid over £100 for a pretty beaten up copy of this 45. Even the very cream, top end material like a mint Jimmy Armstrong on Brothers Three only went for a couple of hundred quid last year, when in the past a tune like that would have nudged the four-figure point.

My advice would be to simply take priced wants as you're doing: the few hardcore deep collectors still left out there worldwide will simply not pay top dollar on ebay because they don't have to: there isn't the competition to push prices up to artificial levels any more. The Japanese scene used to number in the hundreds but would appear to be down to a few dozen collectors; the Dutch scene seems to have virtually disappeared (there always seem to be a few deep soul records sold out of Holland on ebay as the last few remnants of the scene are selling up).

All a pretty sad reminder of the fact that entire scenes can and do disappear.

eBay might not be the best place as garethx says, I sold a few reare deep soul bits several months ago and the prices they went for on eBay was very disappointing

True the deep market has waned - I collect a fair bit of deep and sweet soul and amazingly some of the 45s I've picked up with only one bid has surprised me to say the least.

I guess it comes down to that old chestnut that the 45s are worth what someone is prepared to pay.

BUT tough / rare and GREAT 45s will always attract the right people whether thru ebay or specialist dealers.

Like the very common and poor IMO Supremes 45 that went for 72GBP - You never ever can tell.

Have PM'd you Steve.

Agreed garethx. Just as sad the fact that Rodney Hall and son won't let anyone near the Fame catalogue. They live under the deluded and parochial belief that no one can afford to pay the true price to re release their priceless catalogue on CD. Meanwhile while they continue tossing around in their own little private world the music is slowly dying. wanker.gif s.

I am not sure at this point whether deep soul will ever come back as a music form. The only venue that plays any is the "Lounge" at SE and you are really down to a hardcore.

With summer coming why not invite a few of us round your gaff for a beer and bar-b-q party- Gouch, Fraser, Gareth, Butch, Dean, Pat etc etc (apologies to those not mentioned). we'll sit in your garden drinking buds and listening to these fine tunes, and you maybe even sell a few thumbsup.gif

Some great replies there guys - many thanks

I've also had a load of pm's on this too - i'll reply to these pm's seperately today.

I spoke to Rod Dearlove about this and he too said the same as you guys, so i suspected that would be the outcome.

Forget the fact that i've got stuff for sale, this is really sad for the scene as a whole :(

I personally adore (and i mean adore) Deep Soul BUT find it hard to heavily collect pure Deep 45's cos i'm always spending me dosh on Northern & Modern 45's. I don't collect Funk either so any Deep 45's with Funk on the other side get sold on too! Now Northern & Modern 45's with killer Deep on the other side i can live with :D

Guess many others are in the same boat?

Let's hope we're many many many years away from this implosion happening with Northern & Modern scene's

What's the state of the Funk scene at the moment? Any thoughts on this anyone?

Cheers

Steve, Ian Wright and Simon Thompson should be able to help

you on this with them two being the UKs leading Deep Funk collectors

interesting thread Steve - I collect deep soul as well but my financial circumstances have changed alot in the last 5 years or so (moved house twice and renovating the one we're in now + newish car + expensive petrol commuting costs) so I cannot afford or justify spending £100 on a deep tune purely for my own front room pleasure. Anybody that DJ's as well would probably prefer to spend that £100 on a tune they can use in their sets. It all depends where your priorities are.

cheers, derek

will get a Bill Brandon "Rainbow road" on Tower one day....

Just my opinion of course but I think the Northern scene is in big trouble unless it can attract young blood to it. Over the next few years there will be a lot more people leaving the scene than there will be people coming in to replace them. Think it has a good few years left yet but in 10 or 15 years time, i just can't see it being anywhere as big as it is now.

Not good, only a few serious collectors. But I've heard the number of US funk collectors have increased.

Everyone has their opinion and it's been on SS loads of times but i personally think we'll all still be at it in 10 years time, easily!

Time will tell i guess

Deep soul is my personal favourite as well. The great thing about it is there are loads of great cheap deep soul records, Bobby Patterson -if you hadn't slipped up and got caught, Roger Hatcher- We're gonna make it etc. Of course there are the holy grail deep records, but I'm happy with my classic deep.

In saying that I'm lucky enough to have a copy of Rainbow rd.

Can't wait for Essence next year to play the legendary Downbeat lounge

When's the BBQ Plumby? - sounds like we have enough people / interest for a real deep soul fest. I'll bring the beers  But you have to ensure there are no knives nearby - don't want any unplanned wrist cutting :yes:

DEEP SOUL HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR ME MY FAVOURITE TIPPLE IN THE SOUL BREWERY,THE EXCITING THING WITH THIS STYLE UNLIKE NORTHERN ETC.. I CAN STILL FIND FABULOUS UNKNOWN TITLES ! I FOR SURE STILL PAY WHATEVER IT TAKES FOR CERTAIN TITLES AND WILL CONTINUE TO SO .INFACT I'VE BEEN PLEASENTLY SUPRISED AT THE NUMBER OF NORTHERN COLLECERS THAT HAVE OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS STARTED BUYING DEEP - I THINK ONE WILL FIND THAT MOST OF THE PREMIER DEEP FOLLOWERS HAVE ALL THE BIG TITLES HENCE NEED THAT SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT OR NEW ..

FUNNILY ENOUGH BEEN PLAYING THESE EARLIER

JOHN WASHINGTON - SANDWASH

ANTWANS - YOU GOT THAT RIGHT

BARONS UNLIMITED - LOVE OH LOVE

EARL GAINES - FRUIT FROM ANOTHER MANS TREE ( ONE OF THE 45'S TO GET ME INTO DEEP AND STILL ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVES) ...

DEEP SOUL MARKETS AND PRICES HAVE CHANGED A FAIR BIT OVER THE YEARS,POINT TAKEN RE THE MAKET IN JAPAN,BUT STILL GREAT COLLECTORS OUT THERE SCANNING E BAY LIKE SHIRUTO ETC. I USED TO TRADE ALOT OF DEEP WITH GERMAN DEALERS IN THE EARLY N INETIES BUT THAT HAS BURNED OUT OF RECENTLY AS WELL.

THE PERSON WHO HELPED ME PUT MY DEEP COLLECTION TOGETHER ROD DEARLOVE MAY BE WORTH A CONTACT AS HE IS WELL NETWORKED WITH THE WIDER SOUL COMMUNITY IE THE INTERNATIONAL DEEP COLLECTORS THAT HE SELLS TO .MOST OF MY DEEP COLLECTION CAME FROM HIM VIA HIS LISTS IN THE LATE EIGHTIES AND EARLY NINETIES.

AS FOR FUNK DEFINETLY STEVE WRIGHT ,ALSO TRY THE WITCHES BREW IN THE NORTH EAST JASON WORKS FOR SOUL BROTHER RECORDS AND STILL IS A AVID DEEP FUNK COLLECTOR.

ALL THE BEST AND GOOD LUCK

Cheers Sean can't wait for Essence, Frankie Gearing, Chuck Armstrong,Womack, all ready and waiting.

Anyone still in contact with Jan Barker, used to always read his column in Blackbeat, fantastic stuff!

Last met him at Morecambe weekender in the 90s when Sam Dees came over, had a great time.

Just been inspired to dig a few out to play again, Truth- Come back home, Willie Johnson- Its me, Sweet Berry- Don't let go.

Tony 2 gigs in a year is as good as it gets for me, now that George Jackson is no longer on :(

Bins' - Jan's still around, he's not been doing much other than coaching boys football (something he;s always done, I think) and he hasn't been out for ages according to those who know him best and live nearer to him than we do. But he's still keen on his music - well, his old music, at any rate - and hasn't given up on collecting or anything so drastic as that!

TONE :(

PS: Two gigs a year is still one more than I'm doing, so you're definitley more in demand than I am!!! :(:lol:

Which one? The bloke never made a bad record.

Hi Steve,

It's called ' A Better Place' on Black Rock a real belter :( . Loved your spot at Essence on Saturday afternoon by the way, didn't know any of them.

Hi Tone glad Jans still about, top guy.

Thanks Binsy, yeah that's a fantastic record love his voice on it, and funnily enough it was in the Yarmouth playbox but I don't think I got round to it. I paid a serious wedge for that record, but it's one I just had to have. Probably worth £10 now based on this thread :(

The cat seems to be out of the bag as regards the Chuck Armstrong on Black Rock, an absolutely brilliant record. It would be great if Binsy could recount the tale of obtaining his copy of this record back in the day.

Hi Gareth,

I stumbled across a young kid selling a big box of US 7" vinyl in the Dalston High St where they used to have second hand clothes etc. It was about 15 years ago and everything was 25p or £3 for the James Brown ones :P I bought a few northern tunes, about 19 copies of Dry Well which I didn't like but traded with Tim Brown for loads of great deep!!!

The Chuck Armstrong he didn't want to sell me because it had a funk flip. I wore him down because I had spent a few quid with him and am glad I did. :P

Ey up Steve

There may not be a massive collectors scene anymore but judging by this thread there's loads of us who still love it!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like we need to make the Ground Floor at The Orwell all dayers into a Deep room (ala Yarmouth) no dancefloor, just DJ's playng brill Deep, Sweet & Southern Soul all day?

How about that then - three rooms - Deep, Orwell tunes & Northern....................how good would that be??????????

btw Just dug a great 45 out of the records i was on about. A woman with a FANTASTIC voice on a green label (that's all i can remember for the moment) - will report back later but i think i need to keep it :P

Cheers

Sounds like a great idea - I for one (and not the only one I hope) but support the idea plus a night of Deep / Sweet / Southern..

Perhaps the scene needs rooms/ideas like this ala Thorne to spread the deep gospel .

Hi Tone,

Looking forward to Monumental in a few weeks. Noticed there was a Pep Brown- This good thing that I've got -Walden on ebay recently, wanted $250 didn't sell, thought that would go for a few quid, shame mines knackered

Why don't weekenders (Prestatyn) put on a room for Deep and Sweet soul, even if it was just through the daytime hours, surely there is enough rooms for this, a few hours to chill out in one of the smaller rooms wouldn't be such a big thing and wouldn't really upset the dancers as there are alternatives for them.

Agreed day time sessions are best for this - dancers tend to be more nocturnal

Ensure no "glass" or sharp objects about and keep a first aid nurse on hand for any wrist-slashers. Also notepads and pencils should be on hand for the trainspotters :D Soul Essence with it's old armchairs and a seperate room seems to work well for this form of music - and keep the volume down deep and sweet doesn't need to be played so loud as to cause aural discomfort. Let's do it then!
