Where's The Best Place To Sell Rare Deep Soul Us 45's

I've recently stumbled across a few brilliant (and rare) US Deep Soul 45's.

In the opinion of Soul Source forumees....where is considered to be the best place to offer these 45's for sale?

I'll probably eBay them a few at a time if folk think that's the best place but i thought i'd check first.

Got some killer rarities and there's also a lot of quality Sweet/Group Soul and some Funk bits in there too!

It could be that i offer them on here first before sticking them on the 'bay.

Be interesting to see what people think is the best way forward?

It seems to me that the market for the top-end deep soul tunes has effectively collapsed in recent times. Benny Latimore on Blade sold for about £100 on ebay last week: ten years ago that figure would have been more like £5-600. I bought a mint George Hughley on Fairlane for $25 last week: in 1990 I paid over £100 for a pretty beaten up copy of this 45. Even the very cream, top end material like a mint Jimmy Armstrong on Brothers Three only went for a couple of hundred quid last year, when in the past a tune like that would have nudged the four-figure point.

My advice would be to simply take priced wants as you're doing: the few hardcore deep collectors still left out there worldwide will simply not pay top dollar on ebay because they don't have to: there isn't the competition to push prices up to artificial levels any more. The Japanese scene used to number in the hundreds but would appear to be down to a few dozen collectors; the Dutch scene seems to have virtually disappeared (there always seem to be a few deep soul records sold out of Holland on ebay as the last few remnants of the scene are selling up).

All a pretty sad reminder of the fact that entire scenes can and do disappear.

eBay might not be the best place as garethx says, I sold a few reare deep soul bits several months ago and the prices they went for on eBay was very disappointing

True the deep market has waned - I collect a fair bit of deep and sweet soul and amazingly some of the 45s I've picked up with only one bid has surprised me to say the least.

I guess it comes down to that old chestnut that the 45s are worth what someone is prepared to pay.

BUT tough / rare and GREAT 45s will always attract the right people whether thru ebay or specialist dealers.

Like the very common and poor IMO Supremes 45 that went for 72GBP - You never ever can tell.

I spoke to Rod Dearlove about this and he too said the same as you guys, so i suspected that would be the outcome.

Forget the fact that i've got stuff for sale, this is really sad for the scene as a whole

I personally adore (and i mean adore) Deep Soul BUT find it hard to heavily collect pure Deep 45's cos i'm always spending me dosh on Northern & Modern 45's. I don't collect Funk either so any Deep 45's with Funk on the other side get sold on too! Now Northern & Modern 45's with killer Deep on the other side i can live with

Guess many others are in the same boat?

interesting thread Steve - I collect deep soul as well but my financial circumstances have changed alot in the last 5 years or so (moved house twice and renovating the one we're in now + newish car + expensive petrol commuting costs) so I cannot afford or justify spending £100 on a deep tune purely for my own front room pleasure. Anybody that DJ's as well would probably prefer to spend that £100 on a tune they can use in their sets. It all depends where your priorities are.

Over the next few years there will be a lot more people leaving the scene than there will be people coming in to replace them. Think it has a good few years left yet but in 10 or 15 years time, i just can't see it being anywhere as big as it is now.

Not good, only a few serious collectors. But I've heard the number of US funk collectors have increased.

Just my opinion of course but I think the Northern scene is in big trouble unless it can attract young blood to it. Over the next few years there will be a lot more people leaving the scene than there will be people coming in to replace them. Think it has a good few years left yet but in 10 or 15 years time, i just can't see it being anywhere as big as it is now.

I stumbled across a young kid selling a big box of US 7" vinyl in the Dalston High St where they used to have second hand clothes etc. It was about 15 years ago and everything was 25p or £3 for the James Brown ones I bought a few northern tunes, about 19 copies of Dry Well which I didn't like but traded with Tim Brown for loads of great deep!!!

The Chuck Armstrong he didn't want to sell me because it had a funk flip. I wore him down because I had spent a few quid with him and am glad I did.

How about that then - three rooms - Deep, Orwell tunes & Northern....................how good would that be??????????

btw Just dug a great 45 out of the records i was on about. A woman with a FANTASTIC voice on a green label (that's all i can remember for the moment) - will report back later but i think i need to keep it

Sounds like a great idea - I for one (and not the only one I hope) but support the idea plus a night of Deep / Sweet / Southern..

Perhaps the scene needs rooms/ideas like this ala Thorne to spread the deep gospel .

Why don't weekenders (Prestatyn) put on a room for Deep and Sweet soul, even if it was just through the daytime hours, surely there is enough rooms for this, a few hours to chill out in one of the smaller rooms wouldn't be such a big thing and wouldn't really upset the dancers as there are alternatives for them.

Agreed day time sessions are best for this - dancers tend to be more nocturnal

Ensure no "glass" or sharp objects about and keep a first aid nurse on hand for any wrist-slashers. Also notepads and pencils should be on hand for the trainspotters Soul Essence with it's old armchairs and a seperate room seems to work well for this form of music - and keep the volume down deep and sweet doesn't need to be played so loud as to cause aural discomfort. Let's do it then!
