....with a scene.

As I have gone through my collection over the years, I used to struggle to sell things when I just had to.

When my business went TU a lot of my big ticket items went and it hurt.

But of late I've noticed it has not been that difficult to part with certain 7"s and that my purchases have been the records that reeeeaally mean something to me.

Don't get me wrong, I still buy, always have but I've been wondering of late if I needed the scene that first turned me on to all this to keep me interested in collecting as many records as I used to, as I always wanted everything I'd danced to.

I don't thin k that scene is there anymore - as a matter of fact I know it isn't.

I think the scene now is turning me off a little as the central point for me appears to have changed - the central point being dancing and appreciating.

I don't think that happens so much now and I know that as we get older certain elements of a scene will suffer, so I don't think the scene has twisted any, it's just coming to it's natural conclusion.

I think I liked it more when it was a tad mysterious, when I was the whipping boy and had nothing to prove.

I think I've grown up.

I've not thought that through, I was watching the Great British Menu on catch up with the wife and the thoughts came to me, so I've just stuck 'em down before I lost 'em - so they may be a tad dis-jointed.

i sort of understand what your saying barry although it is a bit disjointed.....there was a time when i thought i`d never sell a record thinking it would be like a death in the family.......now in the last 4 years ive sold more 45`s than john manship.....also for me the scene is totally different and not the one i first came onto years ago.. and to me we seem to be getting frogmarched into `retro `dom......this is one of the main reasons behind the sunday chillout that we do where we dont have any policies as such and getting dancers is not that important..its ok to dance but not the be all and end all......it needs to be kept fresh like in the old days of stafford etc. but on friday and saturday night it seems most of the do`s go thru the motions and for anyone puttin on a decent do..its a labour of love..........i`m startin to ramble now and maybe ive missed your point barry as i just looked back at your first post and you mention a central point of dancing and appreciation has changed.....today it seems to be all about the dancers ( who usually get up to the wrong records or tired records) and less more about appreciation

Barry, read your article as if it were me...dave pinch who posted above knows me well,

in fact (not to embarrass them) but he and his brother bri saved my house when i hit very hard times, business was nearly bust etc and had a mortgage to pay and they bought some very nice tunes (they didnt have to and some of the tunes they'd had and sold on before and didnt really need to buy them again but they helped a mate in dire straits) which payed my months dues and i managed to get back on my feet and tread water for a couple of years, Those boys are my saviours

Now, ive sold a lot of my collection and wasnt bothered about selling any that have gone.. (except willie Tee first taste of hurt...I Loooove that track with a passion) but i dont chase tunes anymore, but i do buy what i really want and stuff i want to keep, other tunes dont care what they are or price tag i can part with in a blink.

My collection was sometimes bought coz i had to have it not that i liked it, but now all my tunes that im buying and keeping are winners to me.

forgot to add Barry, i think when you go through an upheaval like we have it sort of focuses you on the important things in life

and it did put the tunes in prespective...and where id sunk shed loads of cash..so not only did my circumstances start to influence my record buying...but i grew up ...took till i was 41 nearly nine years ago but ....Im now no way as manic about the little black lumps of vinyl

Its interesting you have put this up Barry, of late something has changed for me also, I had a bit of fun with that Funk v Beat ballad thread couple months ago, but underneath that, something had changed for me. The funk thing was coming as far back as 2003/4, more with collectors I guess, but I really do miss the time when Jo Ann Garrett, september Jones, George Smith, Ruby Winters etc were all the rage and super rare sixties ruled the waves,

I miss the london scene from the mid 9ts onwards, 1999 was its pinnacle really, all those exciting times at the 100 club and capitol soul club, Nick Browns do in Leicester sq. jo walace at the river bar / tower bridge..... Kent vs Soul Supply and all that.. allot of that folk are about still, although allot have moved out of the smoke now, but something has changed since, and I cant put my finger on it...

Must just be the passing of time eh...
