I have never heard it played anywhere but I'm sure someone will say it was played at Wigan because they always do. It might predate Wigan as the two collections I found it in were 'old boys'.

Cheers Pete, listened to earlier today and thought it could not belong on the Northern scene but like a lot of other stuff it might have had it's day somewhere.

t was played at wigan by russ...ud have to ask him why ....i was only 9/10 when it got played

I'm sure it predates Wigan. Seem to remember hearing it at Top Rank Hanley circa mid 73

Mark, that defies all logic. Given that the Torch era was awash with so many great tunes why would this piece of garbage be

considered?

Defo played at various venues pre wigan, heard it down at The Catacombs circa 1972. In 1973 I took a copy of the Dave Clark 5 original to the Blackpool Mecca covered up. I gave it to Ian Levine to play and told him it was the vocal version of a really big instrumental sound. He played about 20 seconds of it before he realised what it was.

Oh the folly of youth, the good old days when you could have a laugh and take the piss without the fear of being ostracised by the thought police.

P.S. I have got a really nice copy of the Album on US Atco with all of Leon's greatest Northern hits, you could buy it to put alongside your Wayne Gibson and Guy Darrell L.P's

Wigan did not have a monopoly on playing shite pop tunes as northern Soul, I have mentioned this before but for those not old enough to remember - a certain top DeeJay played Gary Glitter - Rock and Roll pt 2 covered up as Johnny Jones & the KIng Casuals when it came out as a new release (this was 6 months before the record and Mr Glitter hit the big time) - Alan Day - hang your head in shame.

I'm sure that's true Frosty but I went to Up the Junction, the Torch (only twice as I said), the Mecca, Wigan in the earlier years and I genuinely don't remember shite pop tunes as you put it being played. So it does surprise me to find that this may date to the Torch era.

Mike, memories a bit shite now unless something jogs it along but I'm sure there were some others along the lines of Leon Young from the Torch era.

Now we are talking real shite with that Dave. Christ I'm glad I don't remember that. I honestly don't remember anything falling into this category. There were plenty of tracks that I didn't really take to but they would have been your traditional northern stuff that just didn't cut it for me. But it just doesn't fit that given the amount of stuff being discovered then, that stuff likd Leon Young and Offenbach could even be considered.

I have no idea what the Wheel played amongst all of the classics but maybe it was just as culpable in playing pop garbage and let's be honest Leon Young doesn't even fit into the white pop stomper category so easily identifiable with the worst of the Wigan years. I remain confused.

Wigan generally gets all the flak for this type of stuff, but let's have it right, it's been at Every club in Every era.

Yeah but I didn't know that. I suppose I've laboured the point but given that there were so many great tracks being discovered on a weekly bais then, why feel the need to throw in something so painfully wrong.

Some other stuff, seen as being in a similar vein, at least would have had an identifiable beat/rhythm associaited with Northern, but Leon Young Strings, to me, is so far removed from that.

As "Bill Switchgear" says all eras will have had such stuff, just that I cant remember this kind of garbage specifically being spun.

Why don't you get the DJs from these venues to tell you whether or not it was played. A lot of records that are considered not so great now sounded great then, especially at 3am in the middle of nowhere, high on whatever took your fancy. I have a copy on the original Pye label but that's cos I'm a 'Collector' who's always liked the record, quite possibly for the reasons described in the latter part of the last sentence.

Leon Young deffo played Highland Room early days pre Wigan circa late 71/72 ish.
