Chilli Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Just got round to watching Blue Valentine after Sky Plussing it yesterday and heard this fantastic track. Never heard it before and wondered if anyone had any info about the group or this track in particular, like when recorded, was it ever played anywhere, etc. Probably a bit too slow to have been a biggie anywhere, but just wondered. Chilli. 1
Kris Holmes Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 https://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jul/18/blue-valentine-mystery-singer-revealed also there is a full version by The Supremes on Grog 45 unreleased at the time demo taken from a reel, so it could not have been played anywhere bitd. discovered/comped by Numero on their Prix label roundup https://numerogroup.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/you-and-me/
George G Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 (edited) They are the Supremes of Columbus, OH - a male group that started in the doowop era. It was a demo cut by them with a female singer. I think the singer has been discovered, but I don't remember who. The Supremes recorded the same song c. 1974 and it came out on a locally issued 45, thanks to a local Columbus musician/archivist. The 45 has a full band and is faster/slicker. I guess someone already answered almost at the same time Edited January 29, 2013 by George G
Roburt Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Great story. Good on Numero for unearthing the old track, putting it out & placing it in the film.
Sebastian Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Fantastic track! A real pity though that the sound quality on the Numero 45 is godawful. The CD sounds good though!
Chilli Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 Thanks for your help and links to further info. I must admit i thought it sounded "ealier" than a 1970 recording (if that makes sense); maybe that's what they were aiming for?? No wonder I'd never heard it before!! What a great story, and it does make you wonder how many more tracks are left out there unearthed. Chilli

Chilli. Really good film as it goes - but too much nookie!
Kris Holmes Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I couldn't hang with the film. I think the sound quality on the 45 is fine??
Sebastian Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I think the sound quality on the 45 is fine?? Perhaps it's just my copy? Very low sound and lots of crackling. Might be from the end of the pressing run, but it is regardless pressed with very low volume.
