Pete S Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 That could make a grown man cry Yes but he's got no proof that the stock of the Awake 45's were destroyed, because they obviously weren't...it's a well known story about the Gwen Owens record though. 1
grant Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Jim he must have been playing it as a 'rare oldie' at that time because it was played in mid-77, booted and dropped - it's on the Wigan tape I recorded at the time (15/10/77) https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-live-15-10-1977-northern-soul/ recorded that spot too that night Pete - awesome

Ady Croasdell Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 the fact that searlings copy (one of the first) came via john anderson goes congruent with post #36 which inform us that soul bowl had a "three figure quatity"...so we can rest assure that there are about 100, 200 or even more copies tucked away safely in English collections. I'm sorry Marc, you're rather easily convinced. There can't be many records John Anderson has said he's not had a 100 copies of and I think that was only second or third hand reporting anyway. Because Richard Searling bought one from him does not confirm that John had 100 it just confirms that John had at least one. Ady 1

Because Richard Searling bought one from him does not confirm that John had 100 it just confirms that John had at least one. Ady While talking with John (Anderson) tonight, we briefly discussed the above subject. He reckon's that he only ever had circa 50 copies and not all at the same time, although he did sell some used one's for a quid each in the early days (I'm sure Dickie Watt will confirm this fact being one of the lucky recipient's at the time). Althought John had quantity of many of Jack's other release's on Prodigal Triple B, Sepia, Spectrum,Ashford, She etc he has never meet Jack or Eddie (albeit briefly at Prestatyn). His dealings were with Lorriane. Even though John's dislike of Northern is well documented he has always rated Al Gardner's Sweet Baby very highly and thinks the backing track is great. Hitsville Chalky Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 is it any better though than the Precisions - if this is love ? .... Precisions is better and 100 % Frank wilson ..there are loads of Detroit far better ...Eddie Parker is still a great record but not worth what it sells for ... well that's my view on it ..others may think diffrent . 1

Precisions is better and 100 % Frank wilson ..there are loads of Detroit far better ...Eddie Parker is still a great record but not worth what it sells for ... well that's my view on it ..others may think diffrent . Rare records are has you know collectables just like antiques a lot of collecters of rare records dont even bother going to soul do,s they just go about their daily life and if a rare 45 comes available what these people want they bid up to what they can afford yes the Precisions is a fantastic slab of Detroitsoul but nearly all collections have it or should have when a record like Eddie Parker comes available most of the copies are in the hands of Northern diehards who wont sell or in the hands of collecters who wont sell,so the price goes up when a few people with dosh bid against each other Its the old saying a record is only worth what someone is willing to pay and with more collecters these days than ever before some with serious dosh the price on such a powerful Detroit recording like Im Gone with its history and condition .ect is bound to attract the big money. Like most people on SS i know loads of Detroit Recordings which are much better than Im Gone but the bottom line is most of them are readly available for very little money and most collecters have them........ 4
Iancsloft Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Was JM having a sly dig at anyone in particular with his description of the Eddie Parker record? Noooo John Manship in a previous life was in the Order of Knights Templar he is a lost soul still searching for the Holy Grail he will never find it . The Holy Grail he seeks is reported by to be buried somewhere beneath a old stone mill on the border of Lancashire / Yorkshire on the old Halifax Road guarded by the Monkey King lol 2
Quinvy Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 There's no myth. I had the said "holy grail" in my hands a few months ago.
Guest Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 He's so out of it he thinks he lives in japan! You're right...I should stop sending in emails when you lot are asleep, and getting all my post sent from/to Japan, to create the impression that I am living in Japan! And all those sightings of me in record stores all over Tokyo every weekend...my team of Flynny-doubles....muhahahaaa! Back to the EP and how many JA had once upon a time...I recall when I was negotiating to buy a copy many moons ago, being told the story (from the seller who knows JA well) of JA having *several boxes of them'. This is backed up within several threads on here as well, including one Sourcer admitting he left copies in favour of Billy Sha-Rae! However, that said, one comment was that JA 'only' had 50, not 100+, so maybe we'll never know? At the end of the day it is rare with demand faaar outsripping supply and an 'ultimate' to a lot of folk. I hope Jack Ashford has more copies, so he can make a good wedge of cash. I reckon it is destined to go to Australia or Japan...what say you the Aussie contingent...gotta love the exchange rates, eh!?! 2

Chris L Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 (edited) It's been a very, very long time ago but I do believe collector Nigel Martin had 3 copies. His dad worked for Canadian Pacific and he bought records from Martin Koppel way before Martin K became universally known. Meethinks he asked for "Love you baby" and Martin K said he didn't have it but did have a couple of copies of "I'm gone" (if Pete Smith reading this - Pete this is the bloke you and I once visited - seem to remember he had some pretty decent stuff) Edited January 31, 2013 by Chris L

He certainly didn't have "I'm Gone" when we saw him. He did have some tidy Detroit pieces, if you remember he played us and Manship off against one another to bump the price of the stuff up, telling both parties the other had offered more. We missed out in the end.
Simsy Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 (edited) Nigel Martin lived here in Bishop's Stortford once and he invited me to go through his records.
