The irony about punk rock & what it pro-ported to represent, is that the scene was manufactured for commercial gain by Mr Mclaren from day one.

Doesn't change the fact that it's impact freed British music from it's shackles and gave an alternative to progressive stadium rock bands, until they (well some of them) themselves became that very same thing to pro-port to loathe.

It was a case of throwing it all up in the air & see what came out, some great, some drivel IMO.

Also, lets' be honest, soulies & punks didn't really like each other as a youth sub cultures mostly they had didn't have many shared values, the look, the sound, .

I had a mate, who turned into a mad punk in the 70s after the early years at Wigan, but would still go to odd soul night, I used to call him Jerry Fuller. (Double Life)

They changed where the Warrington bus used to drop us off in Wigan - from the bottom of Station Rd to down past the train stations and through the bridge @ Worsley Mesnes (Mains)....which meant having to walk past TRUX, Wigans local punk club.

Horrible walking past that lot with yer long leather and yer bag.

Obversley, there was a fair amount of punks wandering about the Casino at the time.

Bottom line appears to be that you are somehow less entitled to an opinion if you didn't devote your life to going to niters and collecting whatever the latest rare discovery and regardless of whether it was at the right tempo to dance properly to.

I'm a dancer and not a collector, and moved with the times and experienced other types of dance music when I became disenchanted with the way things where going in the early eighties..................so shoot me.

I wasn't one of those who did Wigan for a couple of years, I went there and other niters 74 through 82. I continued to attend soul clubs, ok mostly local do's that my mates organised and DJ'd at right through the intervening period (including some cracking niters at the Ritz) despite the fact that I was regularly at the Hacienda and then garage clubs. Never really gave up the goat at all really, just less intensely and less frequently.

Yet some of the "faith keepers" bleating on here think their's was the only scene that was ongoing. Who made the rule that we had to go to your clubs and with your intensity to be entitled to an opinion.

'You might like your exclusivity, fair enough, you might think the later discoveries are better than the old tunes but you've got to admit that in the most its not really proper dance music is it, which is probably why there is such a chasm between the dancers from the 70's and the forty somethings.

Dancer rather than collecter is a good phrase mate,I think that goes for a hell of a lot of folk.I never spent hardly anytime in record bars at all nighters but this didnt mean I didnt know what records were what and especialy what I liked.In a way I was lucky in that a good mate of mate had a brilliant collection and he did spend most of the night doing deals and sorting through boxes(white metatl ones as well i would sometimes give him a hand with )One of the bigest suprises I got as a returner to the scene was the price of records?Once again though dancer not a collecter was myself(though dont rate myself at dancing either to me its do what you feel to the record and when youre living it on the floor ,dripping sweat after giving it loads of, thats what its about.ps but I aint no acrobat thats for sure.. Going on personal experience I'll use Notts Palais alldayers as a local example. When I first went in 78 the bus from my then hometown Eastwood to Nottingham (coming from Alfreton, Ripley) was chocker both decs. 18 months later It was empty but for me. I now see old mates who are 'back on the scene' and it wasn't in the main because of family etc, it was because they'd decided it was over for them. Nothing wrong with that.

Although when I see them now and they're telling me to get myself to the Grosvenor rooms for some real northern and not that sh1t I listen to.

I'm not telling them they are wrong to leg it, do what you like with life but expect me to have a distinct lack of respect for anyone like this telling me what Northern is and isn't based on scene they volleyed after a brief experience.

here's one ill never forget.

im 44 now,but heard northern @ 12(shool discos,boys brigade discos,tapes etc) & hit the scene when 14(aberdeen music hall,st,kays & smokeys,arbroath niters).somehow managed to picked up 100 northern 45s/lps for £12 when @ school.mostly grapevine 45s/lps,some boots & some originals.sold most to 2 mates @ school who were djn discos.made a few £100 off them.been hooked on it ever since.

anyway wouldnt say i was new to the scene,lol...well one day i was in pub watching scotland v england game,the one where gazza flucked that goal & wind blew the ball off pen spot just as gary was away to hit it,lol.so whatever year that was...a new friend came up to me & said theres a guy here who use to be into northern.ill introduce you to him.great a fellow ktf soul brother.well the guy came over & said so your into northern.yes i am.he said did you go to wigan.i said no,i was too young.he then said...well if you didnt go to wigan THEN YOU KNOW F#=K ALL ABOUT NORTHERN.then he just walked away.was gobsmacked.

he back on scene,so can i now say did you go too the 80's / 90's,NO,THEN YOU KNOW.......lol.

Hilarious but not uncommon. See quite a few with a toned down version of that on Facebook, some have the attitude that if you went to Wigan for a year or 2 you know much more and are far more credible than those who didn't, but who's been at this game for decades.

Seen a thread on Facebook having a go at the real youngsters (those with a pulse, aged < 25) who over the last 10 years have got into it from some awld fellah's who did the Casino, my response was that these youngsters would probably spank their arses (and mine - no puns please) with the knowledge they have.

Gotta ask why some think that though, what insecurity is there at the back of all this to have that chip? Nothing wrong with ditching the scene and returning but to have an attitude after dipping your toe into a 40 year old scene is laughable.
