Tired of the usual 30 or so records that get played at EVERY do like "Hold Down", "Monkey Man", etc and a lot of the UK recorded "Skinhead" reggae tunes on the likes of Torpedo, Joe, etc are amateurish crap to be honest compared to the Jamaican productions of the time (except for the dreadful instrumentals produced by Bunny Lee featuring Peter Tosh on organ....).

NIce post Gordy, apparently those instrumentals with Peter Tosh were never meant to be released, apparently on some or most of them he was just playing along to the track without being serious. You're right, most of them are rubbish - except for the version of "Uncle Joe" on the B side of "Moon Hop", entitled "Harris Wheel" - thats brilliant.

I also agree with you about the UK stuff, most of it is tenth rate apart from Dandy's productions on Downtown, the early ones.

Wet dream, forgot about that one but it was the talk of the class room when we discovered it.

What happened to the age of innocence? Its gone from "smack yo bitch up" to anything to do with drive-by's and ho's these days...serves me right for letting her go on her mate's "grand theft auto" I suppose!

You know Im anal. Gotta look like that stuff you got off me back in end of May.

ROD

Well it's possible because a huge amount of Ska Beat stock was sold in the 80's but it would probably come at a premium. If I was to adopt that buying process I'd have no records, I take them in any playable form really. I knew I shouldn't have bought those Islands off you. I've got 106 of them now.

just had a nosey.............................how cool's that?

Yeah I think it's a great layout where the photos flip over, much better than the static one I used to have

Great choices Nat. amazed to see someone posting modern stuff on here (modern reggae that is!).

My fave Sizzla is "Solid As A Rock" but I hate how he's being a good Rasta on some records then talking about women in a sexist way on others.

Saw Gregory a few years before he died, his voice wasn't the best due to the years of drug problems but he was okay and come on, it was Gregory right there before me!

Also seen Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Morgan Heritage, Marcia Griffiths, Tarrus Riley (with his dad Jimmy) and many more, not seen Beres though - last time he was 50 quid to see and that's a ripoff!

Have you heard of Romain Virgo? A great new singer who's been around for the last year or so.

Nice picks Dean!

YT is brilliant. I know someone who can get me a dubplate from him but they're expensive - 150 notes for two tunes (they are custom made though and it's how a lot of artists make money nowadays).

No I haven't heard of him but I will check him out on you tube, I have also seen Jimmy cliff, the heptones, toots & the maytals brilliant and I paid £35 to see Beres but it was worth every penny, and Tarrus Riley I would love to see him what a beautiful voice he has

And yes I know what you mean about sizzla but solid as a rock is just one of the best he has done in my opinion

But lovers rock just does it for me it's that sort of reggae you can listen to over and over again, but it's Gregory's voice just wonderful

uk reggae was massive right through the 70s till they just tried to copy the jamaicans too much with the ragga thing and lost their way...and the young black kids got into hip hop or dance/drum and bass...often wondered about all the great acts and guess theyre still makin money from dubplates...some still come to bristol but not like it was even in the 90s when i first moved here...john s has got chris lane from fashion records coming down at the end of the month....fashion/saxon ran things for years....how could i forget mi god mi king!...papa levi,...first uk act to go number one in jamaica i believe...can remember being on a mini bus in jamaica when tippa irie came on the radio...proud to be british! lol...

seen beres too...when i was workin with sound systems all the ladies loved gregory and beres...gregorys live lp is a classic...like soul so many unique reggae voices

yeah capletons jah jah citys wicked...got a 12" medley of all the tracks on that riddim...capleton was a slack/gun man dj till someone got shot dead at a manchester gig and changed almost overnight to hard core rasta...tour was another massive one for him in the 90s

bujus in jail now i think...undercover old bill set him up with a big coke deal...and hes been all rasta since he started knockin about with ziggy marley and lost his record deal through the homophobic boom bye bye!
