Premium Stuff Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Hi everyone What are your TOP 5 classic club sounds? By 'club sound' I guess I mean the kind of thing that got played at youth clubs and old school minor soul venues (at a time when the rare stuff got played at the bigger established venues). I don't mean - yeah we play the CODs on Kellmac at our local club These records may be the same as some of the first sounds your heard that turned you onto proper Northern and rare soul in the first place. For me this was the type of sound I heard as a youth that made me realise there was something beyond Motown - and that something was so, sooooo much better I guess, off the top of my head, my 5 classic club sounds would be: Jamo Thomas - I Spy (For The FBI) (Thomas) J.J. Barnes - Please Let Me In (Ric-Tic) Willie Tee - Walking Up A One Way Street (Nola/Atlantic) Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart (Revilot) Gene Chandler - Mr Big Shot (Constellation) Would love to hear yours - so please post 'em up folks! Cheers Richard

Andyj Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 At youth clubs round here in the late seventies we relied on us bringing records in for the DJ to play! So some of the older kids got us hooked on tunes such as - I'm so Glad - The Fuzz Love Feeling - Val McKenna Out on the floor - Dobie Gray Seven Days is too long - Chuck Wood Dance Dance Dance - The Casuleers Some DJ's would then play The Snake, Footsie and Wigans Ovations in the belief that they were up with this crazy Northern Soul thing!! (although The Snake wasn't hated back then!)
Jumpinjoan Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Always loved these and rate them just as much today. Everyone a winner in my book and will always get me out of my seat Martha & Vandellas - Nowhere to Run (still love this and will dance to it whenever and wherever) Tommy Neal - Going to a Happening Brothers - Are You Ready for This Darrell Banks - Our Love is in the Pocket Bobby Garrett - My Little Girl (no apologies for this tune what so ever, just awesome) 1
Theothertosspot Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 (edited) Just a few of a minefield of choice Barbara Lynn - Take Your Love and Run Jackie Day - Before it's Too Late Homer Banks - A Lot of Love Inez and Charlie Foxx - No Stranger to Love Robert Parker - Lets go baby (where the action is) + anything on the Capitol Soul Series 66 and such like. I think back in the day the choice of soul music supplied by the major (and minor) British labels was phenomenal to say the least. Regards Edited January 13, 2013 by theothertosspot
Guest Matt Male Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Easy one since the guy at our youth club only had 5 northern records, and he played: Peggy March - If You Loved Me Kiki Dee - On A Magic Carpet Ride Willie Mitchell - The Champion Teddy Vann - Coloured Man Derek and Ray - Interplay
Back Street Blue Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Blimey some of you guys had very enlightened youth/ main-stream club DJ's !!! some of these lists have stuff on that I didn't hear 'til I went to pucka clubs. Motown was actually the initial hook for me cos that's what got played most at the type of venues in question in my experience. Suppose the ones that stick in my mind as the first non-motown soul sounds that I liked & bought are; Brooks & Jerry - I got what it takes Mel & Tim - Backfield in motion Mitch Ryder - Breakout Butch Baker - The Joker The Capitals - Cool Jerk (....not forgetting Ramsey Lewis - Wade in the water & Fontella Bass - Rescue me)

Citizen P Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 I'm as guilty as anyone, but, it would have been helpful to state your youth club years-it'd help I suppose to see the fallout from the "big clubs". So mine were '68 to '71. So we'd be getting the Wheel type stuff I guess... Back to you...
