Guest Droylsdonian Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 (edited) When Gloria recorded this, nobody could have had any idea that she would quickly have had passed it over and wasted an opportunity to have sung one NS all-time classic, because she thought it more of a fella's toon. Just like 'I ain't goin nowhere', which she wrote, but never recorded, & gave to Jnr. Walker. He was a bloke, btw. Which is the best? I could tell you which is the most 'Northern', but that ain't the point: Edited January 11, 2013 by Droylsdonian
Guest tommymac Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 and gloria jones did record i aint goin nowhere on uk emi

Northern Soul Uk Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Think they're are both as good as each other, and as said above, the inst on the B side of the Rita Kent release is excellent. 1
Guest giant Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Rita & the Tiaras for me' great tune not that rare imo but always goes for big money. all the big collectors this ' i have few copies over the years and never paid more than £200 pounds.
Popular Post Chalky Posted January 11, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 11, 2013 Betty Willis is the other version, more soulful but not the dancer Rita is, still very good though IMO. 4
Steve L Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Both good but Rita for me - memories of Wigan and many other places clinches it
Garethx Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 The Kent Select version blows all the others out of the water. With the extra verse which the original 45 omits and a very powerful mix. You can really appreciate the string arrangement.

Only Dreaming Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Betty Willis is the other version, more soulful but not the dancer Rita is, still very good though IMO. Nice version and quite rare too. I remember the flip side was pretty good as well. Dave 1
Reg Scott Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Betty Willis is the other version, more soulful but not the dancer Rita is, still very good though IMO. Nice version, great soulful slighlty jazzy feel (could imagine Nina Simone doing a good job) and a nice deep flip - but like you say not really for the Northern dancers..
Pete S Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Betty Willis is the other version, more soulful but not the dancer Rita is, still very good though IMO. Utterly useless version...
Reg Scott Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Utterly useless version... Don't beat around the bush Pete - tell us what you really think! 1
Guest Brooky Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 And another one =================================================================================================================== Rita's vocals are far smoother than GJ's imho...song flows better somehow. As far as Pete S's clip goes....the lead singer struggles badly with the verses at certain points but I actually love her voice when she delivers the chorus......that massive pony-tail does something for me too...so judgement might be slightly clouded!!!

I have no opinion of it, I just remembered someone posting this a few years ago so I was just re-posting it. But of the actual record - just prefer the original version on the Dore single, don't like the versions with the extra verse. 1
Chalky Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Nice version and quite rare too. I remember the flip side was pretty good as well. Dave The flip is superb deep soul. 1
Guest Droylsdonian Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Well, I did ask what, I hope, was not a loaded question. Rita does sound a tad downbeat, but - as ever - that can be very positive in a NS song. I am undecided.
Jim G Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Rita for me as it holds memories, but Gloria's is brilliant also.
Guest CARL D Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Extended Rita/Tiaras and Gloria Jones versions are AWESOME!!!!
Billywhizz Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Both good but Rita for me - memories of Wigan and many other places clinches it spot on ,thanks R S for playing it billy
Chalky Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Extended Rita/Tiaras and Gloria Jones versions are AWESOME!!!! Personally its just as good without the added verse. The extended version adds nothing to the quality IMO, doesn't make it any better nor any worse, IMO. 1
Pete S Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Personally its just as good without the added verse. The extended version adds nothing to the quality IMO, doesn't make it any better nor any worse, IMO. Just makes it longer and slightly boring..no need for that extra verse, it was perfect as it was
Guest CARL D Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 All three version are excellent in their own way! The Kent Select version is clearer, accentuating the strings and backing vocals, which is an enjoyable variation to the Dore 45, i.m.o. Personally its just as good without the added verse. The extended version adds nothing to the quality IMO, doesn't make it any better nor any worse, IMO.
