Neiljon31
Ha ha! We had some right humdingers going on in the letters pages. Back and forth it went. theres a whole thread there ...(so why write it in this thread I hear you say) I especially recall ''Tommo Drops The Bombo'' and a letter in which I think it was Ion likened people - maybe himself or Pete Crampton to Zeus or some other mythological god or character. I could go 'up the cupboard' and check but i'll leave that for now Many of the letters were definitely written first thing on a Saturday or Sunday morning after long night, great stuff. As for OVO I think its one of the better abbreviations that social media has delivered to us. IMHO ! 1 Link to comment Social source share
Len
So its ok for a dj of integrity to play a boot or carver, who decides who these djs are ,just a question. Gawd, what have I 're-started'?.....Ok, I'll try and answer - Obviously, this is just my take on it.....No one 'decides' who these D.J's are, it's a matter of personal opinion. Some D.J's to me have no original ideas what so ever, hence my term 'Cut 'n' Paste' D.J's. These sort may have some good records, but they can't normally put a decent set together, they just copy other D.J's -There's a fine line between copying and being influenced. I see these D.J's as having less integrity than some 'honest' bloke whacking a load of pressings on, full of passion, because he simply loves the music. Trouble is, the more we discuss it, the sillier it gets if you see what I mean. I prefer to still not give it to much thought - I know what I play and which D.J's I respect and that's all that matters to me. I hope that answers your question ok for you. Len
Here’s a couple of scenarios that are ‘the same, but oh so different’ I was guesting at ‘an event’ a few months back, I took The Tempests L.P to play ‘Someday’ as I knew that particular crowd loved it (and I could also use it as a ‘safety card’!) Anyway, the chap before me coincidently was playing it off a pressing — It didn’t bother me and I didn’t say anything, I’m sure if he’d known I had intended to play it, he wouldn’t have done — No big deal (It didn’t ruin my night) Now, I know of another time where (We’ll call him) ‘Mr X’ was guesting somewhere and a similar thing happened, the difference being that ‘Mr X’ was known for playing the record in question, I believe he actually played it again as a protest — This is when toes are trodden on. MrsWoodsrules
The irony is that at Wigan, best tunes on OVO, had the labels C/U. so I've just invented an new term CUOVO. Aid. Link to comment Social source share
Guest Matt Male
I know this isn't an original vinyl is best thread, but I heard Neil Pearson on Mastermind the other day trying to explain why he bought and collected first editions of rare books and why it mattered to him that they were first editions. He said it was because, to him, that was the first time ever that those thoughts, ideas, stories had every appeared in the world and been available for everyone to know. I realised that it's the same with vinyl, the first instance of that song existing and being commercially available, the label on which anyone had heard it for the first time, a first hand original. I think there is something special and unique about that. Just thought i'd share. Link to comment Social source share

boba
This was a good thread, about the history of the word and of the mentality of the scene. The last dozen or half dozen posts have been drifting off into another debate about why DJs should or shouldn't care. If it continues that way I'm not sure, I'll either close the thread or delete the off-topic posts as the topic has been surprisingly new and interesting. e.g. even before the phrase was coined (which itself is interesting), when was there a mentality shift / focus on having originals. Again, it's a historical question, not a debate about the validity of "OVO'. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Roburt
Well if we insisted on a OSO (Orig Soulies Only) or OCO (Orig Casinoites Only) policy at NS events, the scene would have died off years ago. Can't see what all the fuss is concerning OVO mesen, as long as people are dancing the DJ's are achieving their aim. ............ HOPE THAT strict Boba don't delete this as being 'off topic'. Guest dundeedavie
So it would seem originals have always been a core part of the real scene, some won't be happy with that. Thinking back to the handful of times I did a spot mid 80s, OVO in the main was just expected and not really talked about; to be honest you would have been considered a div for doing a spot of pressings back then. Personally i'm glad it's always been a part of the scene and not just a 'recent' anorak led situation. The second bit still should be the case, it should be an embarrassment to anyone using boots Link to comment Social source share
Steve G
Trouble is Davie half the people playing boots wouldn't know a boot from an original, and look completely blank, like they don't know......went to a "soul night" and the guy on before me finished with a boot of a £75-100 record. I said "can't you find the original of that then?" in a friendly sort of way, and he looked at me and said "Is that not an original then?" with a face full of disappointment. I honestly think he didn't know. Anyway no sign of any pre 2005 OVO ads so I reckon Dave Rimmer was the first, unless someone proves otherwise..... paultp
I've been trying to remember when I first heard the term OVO, I think it is a relatively recent thing for me which probably coincided with people starting to press up bootlegs again. There were always 70's bootlegs about but as others have said; nobody would have dreamed of DJing with them. Then probably in the early to mid 2000's people started pressing up every big expensive tune. I think that's when I first heard it mentioned. So it may have coincided with the rapid growth of ebay use. in the late 90's relatively few people used ebay (6 records for a dollar ) then it gradually became mainstream and so presented an easy market for counterfeiters in general. Guest Gogs
Just checked through lots of different flyers from over 30 different venues dating from approx 2002-2012 (although all have the date on them very few actually state what year) none of them say ovo on them. the closest i could find referring to originals only was this from (i think 2004 or 5) from a nite that is no longer running . Len
(although all have the date on them very few actually state what year) That's something I noticed about old flyers - Shame really because as time marches on, it's hard to remember, when, what, who? etc. All the best, Len Link to comment Social source share
boba
I'm still trying to decide which I'd prefer: A badly constructed set of OVO, or a well constructed set with the occasional boot thrown in. Which is the lesser of two evils (Obviously we'd all prefer to hear a well constructed set of originals, but if you remove that possibility then what's left?) I deleted this post which is the exact same argument that has been repeated over and over and over again (OVAOVAOVA) in the "OVO" threads. Not trying to censor anyone, but again this thread is about the history of "OVO", not the merits of it. Thank you. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Guest Bearsy
When I came into the scene in 2006 it seemed that most if not all soulies I talked too would use the term OVO in one way or other so I took it that the term had always been a part of the scene. SHS was the first soul night I can remember back then 2006 that advertised their night being OVO, reason I remember is cos I wanted to there and I told a few mates if they fancied it, their reply was "no" cos it's OVO it will be all boring dreary dross played by anoraks. How wrong they was lol, my mates ain't out and out soulies they are scooterist but its them that really got me into the scene but they often went to soul nights for a good years and they knew of the term OVO so maybe it was used more by scooterists beforehand to separate the kind of music they wanted to hear to the real soul scene that played mainly OVO, just a thought not a fact.... Geeselad
This thread is about where the term came from. One more discussion post about actual "OVO" and I'm closing the thread. Not trying to censor anyone, please read the large amount of existing threads on the topic (which at this point only negatively affect the AATS forum, even if your post is friendly and positive). If you have some totally new perspective to add hit "report" on the thread. Thank you. that sounds soooooo paraniod. Link to comment Social source share
boba
that sounds soooooo paraniod. Have you seen the hundreds of pages of threads on the validity of "OVO"? I'm trying to allow a real discussion about a different but related topic without it spiraling into the exact same discussion that everybody feels the need to express an opinion and that nobody has anything new to add to. They create bad blood and people just take shots at each other and it ruins the AATS forum. I'm trying to be as lenient as possible without deleting the thread. I'm not paranoid, what I'm describing has already happened many times and has started to happen in this thread a couple times. Thank you. 1 Link to comment Social source share
