Sean Hampsey Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Hi all, Well, its that time of year again It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, which started in 2007, here we go again! Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers. You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet! You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months. It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves. It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster! We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' Whatever floats your boat! With increased diversity around these days, this should be an interesting list! How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich new seam of quality choonage? No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year! So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2013. Oh... and a Happy (and Soulful) New Year to all! Sean Hampsey

Hill868 Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 What about the great and not too well known Soulful modern mover ' KEEP SMILIN ' from EDDIE JAY & RAY on PPL.

Cunnie Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeBs_zfsLLE Very nice Simon but oh so torn between waiting for a 7" & paying a fortune or buying the 12".
Popular Post Cunnie Posted January 1, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 1, 2013 My tips, some will be known to most but can see these having a big year & shooting up pricewise. First one is Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson - Willing. Was thought by many to be album only but it also got a 7" release on Arista. Getting big on the European scene & sure to follow here now a very few 7" copy's have surfaced (many thanks Mr Plumb). Second one is from my favourite year (1979) & also one of my favourite groups, The Joneses - Love Contest. Know it's been getting a few spins this year from people like Wayne Arbon & of course myself & it always seems to get a great dancefloor reaction. Third one & a bit of a contradiction to my first tip as it is an album only track. Also been around & known for a while but ignored by most due to the format. It's The Ascot's - She's So Indifferent To Me Now. Was fortunate enough to pick the album up very cheaply from Craig Moerer but they're now long gone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6YjhCyTIOM 10
Andy Reynard Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Lee Williams and The Cymbals - Get It Together Black circle not sure if its well known or not But it's new to me and a really nice tune for 2013 1

Guest Brett F Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeBs_zfsLLE Already a big sound in 2012.....You need to get out more Simon.
Haydn Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Found this rummaging in a box on 7", kept the dancers up during a set last month. https://youtu.be/QxWxBkbUaFk 2
Guest Brett F Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Dave Lucas was playing all the good tracks off the Ascots album at' Dab of Soul' some years back, he introduced me and Wayne Arbon to the album..

Seem to remember us two & also Nev Griffiths discussing this at Morecambe a couple of years ago too Brett.
Guest Brett F Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Do people not travel anywhere, anymore ????..Old Mark Etheridge spin from Ponds Forge, Sheffield....Think the venue has been shut a good 6 years !!!
Guest Dave Turner Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 One for Just Soul I think Sean Ruby's last outing for Zodiac (1973)
Popular Post Dean Posted January 2, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2013 Look forward to this thread Sean. I know you said no need for sound clips, but following the pattern of previous posts: Picked up a King demo of this during 2012 and it's been my favourite home play of the year 4
Guest Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p7L7eJrTSTE Probs been played oot but yet to get the big lick IMO again one of those that was thought to be lp only Kieran
Sammy Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Nice to see this thread again. I always got good tips from this so now it's time to contribute: Larry Reynolds - Take away the big hurt - Tri Spin Uptempo, perfect dancer and so much rarer than "Sweet Tooth". If the right DJ picks this up it will be huge. Casino Royale - To be my girl - Key Loc. Also quite rare. Perhaps a bit slow to really take over the dancefloors, but a pretty tune with Joe Jama on vocals and that has to contribute to something... 1
Dave Pinch Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 been a tape swap record for years and years but probably broke thru in 2012
Dave Pinch Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Found this rummaging in a box on 7", kept the dancers up during a set last month. bloody hell i got rid of mine in one of the soul packs i did last year 1
Tiberius Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Casino Royale - To be my girl - Key Loc. Also quite rare. Perhaps a bit slow to really take over the dancefloors, but a pretty tune with Joe Jama on vocals and that has to contribute to something... One of the hardest on the label for sure, possibly the hardest to locate in good shape? A point to note is that it would appear not to be Joe Jama on vocals but Fernando Arangua if you read the comments to the video on youtube, one of which is from Fernado's wife.
Sammy Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Oh! I absolutely missed this. I located my copy early 2012 and these comments were not there by that time... I love when people related to the artists or the artists themselves fill in the gaps.
Guest Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) Not sure if this has had its day but anyways WILLIE DALE Let your light shine. Tough to track this one down Edited January 2, 2013 by fifesoul

boba Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 I don't understand why this record isn't a thing yet, it's on the hard-to-find stock copy of "good loving is just a dime away" and is so awesome. This is my pick, even though I have no influence on anyone: 3
Guest chorleybloke Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 This is what I'll be hammering down under this year, a full throttle NS 60s dancer. Not sure if it gets any exposure on the UK circuit? Les Femmes - Closer - Power Pack Cheers........Pete https://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=q3-V31ntQTM
Dean Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Can I add another. I was considering a thread along the lines of "What 3 tunes do you play at home to refresh your enthusiasm after returning from another mediocre oldies night - a sort of 3 Before Bed", but thought it would be less offensive to post 'em on here. At the moment one would be The Fabulous Denos posted earlier above, another would be this one. Jimmy Radcliffe - Lucky Old Sun; on Shout. Don't expect to hear it out but for me it's one hell of an uplifting ballad. Worth starting a nighter just to have it as an ender! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYdz_LtBiaQ 2
Popular Post Jim G Posted January 2, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) Bought this as a new release in 1973 and just picked up a mint UK demo this week (£4) which rekindled my interest. To much knowledge it wasn't played out back in the day as it was too slow, but today it is perfect for our ageing legs (and wallets cos it is still cheap) Major Lance "Sweeter" Edited January 2, 2013 by jim g 5

Thanks to Sean for the thread and thanks to Cunnie for the Ascots post.

Smudger Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) Odyssey Our lives are shaped by what we love Mowest 7" Now that's strange just listened to this clip all the way through ,my promo 7" has the vibes break on it and is 3.36 mins long are there two 7" versions ? Guest Nick Harrison Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Um - both the above Dynamic Superiors and Odyssey are very guilty of a serious case of "over popularity" !! 30 year old modern oldies. Well whatever- be it diversity, recognition or recommendation, I'll wind my neck in !! 3
paultp Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Um - both the above Dynamic Superiors and Odyssey are very guilty of a serious case of "over popularity" !! 30 year old modern oldies. Well whatever- be it diversity, recognition or recommendation, I'll wind my neck in !! I have to say that not many people seemed to know the Dynamic Superiors when I played it at The Attic when djing with Jo Wallace (seems ages ago now; probably 2011). It caused at least a couple of well known collectors/DJs to sidle across to the decks for a peek. Think I posted on the "cheap but brilliant" thread as well. Great tune but too cheap to go massive.
Douglaschip Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Brethen - Can this be real - Teen Town - sounds so right for today - clip on You Tube I think. Get it cheap while you can!

Another case of the crippling divide, fuelled by fragmentation, due to the poor clarity of the Northern Soul relation. Northern and modern - were never twins or even cousins. What could be made clearer. 2
Sean Hampsey Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Brethen - Can this be real - Teen Town - sounds so right for today - clip on You Tube I think. Get it cheap while you can! Really like that Adam. Right - Who's got one for me? Thanks, Sean
Hammersoul Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Morning-American Standard band 45,think this would really work at Essence and a few other places. Not on you tube.Very left field.
Sean Hampsey Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Really good start to the thread everyone. Thank you. Will give it a couple more days and then I'll do a consolidated list. And don't be shy posting. Just because someone else already knows the track, or has played it (or heard it played out) doesn't mean it's not right to share with the rest of us. With so many venues on throughout the UK, we can't all be everywhere, can we! Sean
Popular Post Hammersoul Posted January 2, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) This is known and wanted by a few(sorry guys). First played by Paul Sutton many moons ago but only a few of us picked up on it.Took me years to find this bugger: From Brazil of all places: Really think once copies turn up or sold to the bigger boys, this will go massive. Edited January 2, 2013 by Hammersoul 5
Patto Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Put this one on the Box forum a couple of weeks ago.Forgotten Oldie by THE PLAYERS--GET RIGHT---MINIT.Recon thiscould make it played out nice uptempo Northern 1
arnie j Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 i fookin love this, bit of a funky one with great guitar riff and horns, its the other side of take me back so should only be bout a tenner(thats what i paid anyhow),reckon it would sound superb on a big system, not sure if anyone plays it cos i dont go out anywhere, perhaps not everyones cup of tea but im hooked on that guitar riff ! jason
Hammersoul Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Last of my 3 tips for 2013: I`ll make a sweetman (out of you)-Doris Duke. More a collectors record then dancefloor but defo one for the connoisseurs: Not a great clip but best i can find. Big thx to Micky Gynn for putting me onto this .
