stainless steve Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 (edited) There are many venue's that offer more than one room.. but would anyone be interested in a room that played tamla classics (not needle in a haystack!) and the odd bit of club soul? I know I would!! . Just thought I'd ask this as I'm curious as to what others think. (From Mrs Dospan ; aka; Kaz) Edited April 26, 2006 by dospan
uni ted Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 could it be like the casino motown allnighters where they played jo tex etc more than motown ????????

I know I would!! . Just thought I'd ask this as I'm curious as to what others think. (From Mrs Dospan ; aka; Kaz) =========== I actually think it would be a good idea. Youngsters coming into the scene know far more motown initially than northern, it could be like a breeding ground. Natural progression from motown for most was northern, perhaps it could work again. Plus I still like hearing motown played, and don't mind the odd bit of club soul either Winnie:-)
BlueWail Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 A motown room would be worth a try,i know my mrs would deffo be in there and i wouldnt be adverse to frequenting the room
stainless steve Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 could it be like the casino motown allnighters where they played jo tex etc more than motown ???????? Err..can't really comment on the bit about the Casino as I only went Once!! and then I spent the whole night sat in the darkest corner of Mr M's!!! .. I dare not get up and dance (was a very naive seventeen year old!) didn't think I could compete with the regular casino gooer's!! they all seemed soooo good!!!...I do like a good old dance now though! Kaz
stainless steve Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 Hope not!! Ken..why not!! You and Steve could do a spot of dj'ing! (yknow Steve from Bradford my hubby the sarky one!! ) Kaz
Guest Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 Bloody great idea. Hi I think I have asked this before on here, not sure about a Motown room, but I have been asked a number of times by people recently about putting on a Detroit Nighter! Any thoughts -would such a thing work? Cheers Paddy
Guest kid mohair Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 0ne problem we will need a venue with about 4 rooms unless 1 gets the chop may i sugest the modern room
stainless steve Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 So all that's needed now is.. a very, very, nice promoter to find an extra room (anywhere will do) and some very, very, nice dj's (with good collection of tamla) and..hey presto!! wev'e got a 'Motown Room'!! ....Any offer's anyone????
Guest Baz Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 0ne problem we will need a venue with about 4 rooms unless 1 gets the chop may i sugest the modern room No then there'll be even more disco in the main rooms
Guest kid mohair Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 No then there'll be even more disco in the main rooms [/q uote] oh yea.
Guest Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 One of the worst allnighters I ever went to was when Richard Searling had a motown only nighter at The Ritz. Think I danced 3 times all night, and spent the rest of the time downstairs near the toilets.
John Al Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 could it be like the casino motown allnighters where they played jo tex etc more than motown ???????? Agreed. Casino Motown Nighters never worked. They ran out of stuff very quickly then expanded it to Motown affiliates, then Detroit, then everything else!!
stainless steve Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 No then there'll be even more disco in the main rooms Do they play disco in the main rooms? I know they play a smattering of modern etc,, but at least if they have a motown room it will be a refreshing change.
Craig W Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 (edited) I've been thinking of having a Motown / Detroit night at The 44 Club on the August date which i think could work well over a 4-5 hour period. I will have a word with Dave on Friday to see what he thinks.i think it could be a good night. Edited April 26, 2006 by Craig W
BlueWail Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 Ive noticed that this fridays soul night in Rhyl is a motown night I think ill change my venue plans and give it a visit

Just need a extremely nice promoter to set the ball rolling!!! Wish I was loaded then I'd buy a venue with about FIVE rooms and there could be some'at different in all of them!!

Think it a great Idea How about a Motown Room On the site in the Forum, For all things Motown. Might attract a few more Visitors to the site and you never know it might attract some new blood into the northern scene.

Might attract a few more Visitors to the site and you never know it might attract some new blood into the northern scene. Now that is a good idea...and you never know..a very, very, nice promoter might see it and decide to include a room especially for tamla & club-soul (no slow stuff though).

stainless steve Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 The Modern room at Winsford has been chopped . I wonder if they will turn that into a Motown room instead of a gym Steve Hiya Steve! Kaz (from Bradford) ere!. Now this is a coincidence! How dya feel about putting tamla etc into the (what was) modern room? You know you can do it? Go on Steve..have a think about it?

Sorry Kaz, We only have the one room from now on but maybe some future guest DJ or resident could be bribed, sweet talked, molested,or threatened into playing some Motown Steve

Guest Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 0ne problem we will need a venue with about 4 rooms unless 1 gets the chop may i sugest the modern room Noooooo! I would have nowhere to pump out my shapes without a modern room big box, little box, big box, little box (you get the idea) For those of you who may have seen me in the Modern Room at the last Kings Hall nighter, I only went in there for a sit down....

Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 If your gonna have a Motown room would you play basically any fast song cause for all we care some DJ could spin Dancing on the Celling by Lional Richie or Jackson 5 - I Want You Back yet it's not Northern soul. I personally don't like the idea, yeah nice If i went to one and heard all Motown songs nothing else. But i prefer just straight forward Northern soul with the odd Modern/Northern soul related track when i go to the soul nights, Motown songs will get added but not too many. To even have 2 rooms one for Northern and one for Motown even makes us want to keep going back and forth.
Maark Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 I think it's worth a try! Motown is still very popular, just ask Paddy Grady about the numbers he get's at his do's! Another good idea is what Rugby do and give over the smaller room to anyone who want s to play their soul collection! Actually , anything is better than a Modern room! There are many venue's that offer more than one room.. but would anyone be interested in a room that played tamla classics (not needle in a haystack!) and the odd bit of club soul? I know I would!! . Guest in town Mikey Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Bloody great idea. You are ahead of your time Warren
Guest Andy BB Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Naah I adore Motown but not all Motown, all night. Not more than a couple of times anyway, unless you've found an absolutely huge mountain of previously unreleased sixities stuff? Ermm have you?

Agree with ya on this Andy, dont think I could stand it.. be like going to a wedding reception
Simsy Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Tough shout between a Motown room and Trifle's idea of a Northern karaoke room.
sister dawn Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Tough shout between a Motown room and Trifle's idea of a Northern karaoke room. now your talking..... karaoke
Guest Dan Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 not enough good stuff on motown for hours and hours of it. in fact, personally, a straight hour of motown would be enough for me because it does all sound similar, the 60s stuff anyway. like, i love the drum roll, but 80 times in a night? a detroit / philly / chicago night would be interesting (i didn't attend the detroit one last year [?] obviously) but that's about as far as it would go for me.
Winsford Soul Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Did I say sarky?..silly me..I meant sparkly!! (as in sparkling wit etc..) lol . (ps; Hi to Lou.x) Sure you meant sparkling as in wine, should be kept in a bottle and only brought out on special occasions Steve
Guest Andy BB Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 As the suggestions are flooding in - I'd love a New York only night. Anyone know of any past/present/future?
Supercorsa Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 As the suggestions are flooding in - I'd love a New York only night. Anyone know of any past/present/future? I think you can get a plane from Heathrow that will take you to New York for a night.

Saw the Funk Brothers movie at the cinema in Hebden Bridge a couple of years ago. Every record played after the film from 9pm to 1am was Motown. None repeated, all northern or danceable. One of the best nights I've ever been to. What a cinema that is! Dance floor at the front, bring your own beer and brilliant sound system. DJs were Richard Searling, Terry Jones and Rick who started Chatbusters. Ask them if the records were boring!!

(From Mrs Dospan ; aka; Kaz)Rhyl Town hall this Friday is our Motown/Club Classic Night, It will most probably be our best supported night as we'll pick up the handbag brigade as well as our usual crowd.
Steve G Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Could easily do an hour of underplayed / lesser known Motown stuff several times over - B sides, LP tracks in fact I surprise myself sometimes with things on Motown that I have and don't know / recall. Think it might work better at an evening do - agree for an allnighter it's a "no no".

Hey that's a pretty good idea but why stop with those particular cities & why limit yourself to one label( ) ? How about playing obscure 60s soul records from all over the place & instead of playing the same ones in every bloody club I'm sure that there must be some records that haven't been played for years that perhaps could be revived. Anyone think that could work ?...................... What ?
Guest Netspeaky Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 I think it's simple to do a whole night of Motown, unless you're very narrow in your sellection, I could without too much trouble. There are literally 100's of Motown tracks to be played and as generally you're talking around 30 tracks an hour, you can easily do it. Clasic Motown (Including hits) Unrelease/Rare Motown (Northern) R&B/R&R Motown (The Early days) Crossover Motown (70's) Modern Motown (80's onwards) God some of you must live with about 20 Motown tracks, open your eyes. You do do a good half hour or even more with the Tempts alone. .
Guest Dan Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 DJs were Richard Searling, Terry Jones and Rick who started Chatbusters. Ask them if the records were boring!! not saying they're boring records, obviously i love motown and have got loads of it. but there's undeniably a motown sound and i personally wouldn't want to listen to it hour after hour...variety being the spice of life and all that. but each to his or her own of course.
