No one mentioned OVO, going over to the decks to see if what she is playing is a real un or anything else until you piped up.

It was suggested she tries to move away from the same old same and I replied not at Goodyears...nor the majority of places in the West Midlands. If she is enjoying that then fine, not a problem to me, I wouldn't stop or discourage anyone from doing what they enjoy.

I do encourage youngsters, they are more than welcome at Lifeline All-nighter which is in Natalie's neck of the woods. We are also looking for youngsters with a refreshing outlook but to be honest she wouldn't stand a chance DJing there with that playlist, that isn't a criticism of Natalie it is just not what Lifeline is about.

I aint into naming and shaming but if you are on the scene in south or west yorks you may know of it .

have not been there myself but one of the dj,s concerned told me he had had is fee docked for playing boots . which probably is fair enough if they are told its only OVO .

Why not? Ok,off topic,but 50% of the scene at least is built on OVO. Are we to look down on folks who are interested in labels now......?

You can't argue / reason with people who don't have the same values / passion / understanding / love for it that you have. And before anyone starts that's not being nasty just how it is. Some people feel it's ok to play boots etc - others don't. Yes the scene may continue but it won't have the same integrity it once had

I just wish it didn't matter so much! :lol:

Hi Barney,

I think its more down to the fact that most women don't give a shit about what the label is as long as it sounds good. No being disparaging about women just an observation. My wife has been going to do's since the mid to late 70's and she still asks me to ask the DJ for 'Something I like !!' Note, I say MOST WOMEN, there are some out there that do care but as a ratio to men ..... Yes, got to agree with the Door thing. They always seem to get the shitty end of the stick. They take the money, probably do a lot behind the scenes but the Boys get the Pat on the Back ( Quite right too, know your place Lol !! ) Round of applause please for all the Girls that put in the hours XXX

Back in the early days it used to amaze me how few Black people frequented Soul do's and today, as I said, very few Asians, a bit like Football - but that's for another thread !!

Thanks for the plaudits, Ian always delivers. Not got one now til March ( double booked us with some bloody Dance Class !! )

ok to sum this up and will not quote verbatim but here are some of the comments paraphrased by myself;-

youngsters are welcome on the scene and can dj if they go to different venues and collect OVO and after a period of time after scriming and saving and not given leg ups say after 5 or 6years, provided they complie a cd to send to promoters, prove they are not lazy t*ats, and get down on their knees and beg for a spot. or go away and leave us olduns alone and start their own venues,, :yes:

How about youngsters and others just going out for a good time....to much to ask!!!.....and whats this about sending cd,s to the promoter for a spot......utter bollox.....people should attend the f**king club of choice that plays what they like......this itself is a major problem with all dj,s thats why so many f**k up.....what arrogance to want to dj at a club they have no intention of frequenting can,t be bothered to go ,but give me a dj spot....my reply NO!....Don,t happen at the batcave. Lastly surely any dj must play the music the club plays.......it,s no good djing at a place playing your choice selections of r&b stompers for instance when it,s a modern venue ect ect.....sometimes people can,t/won,t see for looking

Not an old chesnut, i've seen and met many an artist and producer, arranger over the years, would you for instance present a bootleg copy 45' before Darrow Fletcher to sign/autograph and walk away happy with that situation....Well whenever i've met any of the aforementioned soul people , i've always brought with me original records, and yes their eyes lit up, they felt honoured to sign such items, Richard Caiton this April at Soul Essence told me he didn't even own the Malaco 45' i asked him to sign, but his face lit up with joy that i had brought it along to play .( i played his 45'at Essence, i hasten to add because i was on the dj rosta)

Plenty going on in Europe with the young un's or is it only this country that's aloud to keep it going?I think it will go back to the early days of the scene with small venues & few handfuls of devotees keeping it alive,don't see anything wrong with that as few with passion is far better then hundreds without it.

Totally correct mate, I attend events in Valencia where I would say the ave age would be 24 or so, they are mad for it as much as we were back then. The DJ have all the top tunes and the dress code is like going back in time apart from the stupid baggy trousers, which is not such a bad thing. Europe is Northern Souls way forward, people with hair etc ha ha.

Well thats a bit daft....audi sell a car for 50k....thats that.....if the buyer can sell it for 100k nothing to do with audi..........plus the most amount of artists were ripped off by their own countrymen.....maybe the buck stops with them

Barney, i don't know you, you have faced all the questions, and been against the wall in this thread, i have no axe to grind, each to their own i say, thankfully the bootleg scenario is with your agreement, with reference to the artist and their records, well surely we all work and get a reward, if i sell my house and get a profit i don't expect years down the line to get a cut of that profit, but if somebody tried to sell my product as their own when it obviously wasn't i would be upset.

Today with the advantage of technology we can listen to almost anything any time in the comfort of our own home, so why on earth would a youngster starting out want to lug a heavy box of boots around when they can carry 1000s of tracks on their key ring?

Surely the only good reason for carrying heavy boxes all over the shop is because what's in those boxes is worth the effort?

Barney, i seem to repeat myself even to the point that i am bored with hearing or reading it....But surely the rare soul scene is built upon original records being found and then played, yes it's elitist, but so what, i don't wanna be involved in an everyday Joe Bloggs world, my music is the best ever made, the pleasure as a collector ( i count myself as one) is immense, i could care less what age you are what colour your skin is or if you piss standing up or sat down. I love soul music, this is my life and has been since i was a teenager, but and it's a big 'But' the whole envelope has been one of true records, wrapped up within this whole wonderful world, without that for me it would be ordinary, i didn't want it easy, i like and love the challenge of finding original records, even on this site many years back to get an email from Ted Massey asking him to do a Cd of 70's tracks i had was an immense honour and a pleasure. Perhaps you Barney don't dig that deep (and nothing wrong if you don't )..But i like that level, it suits my personality, the rare records, the hunt, I have the desire to chase things, that i may never get...I love the sounds that emit from the speakers at any club as much as you, but there is so much more involved when you get involved in the whole Soul world.

I feel sorry for you Brett to be saddled with such a single mindedness is not healthy to me , soul music is part of my life and always has and will be , and I mean the music ,not 7inch vinyl discs, all of my social life all my friends and even my holidays revolve around soul music , it even comes into my other passion scooters in the form of old lambrettas and similar ovo arguments exist in the scooter world believe me , but surely lifes too short too fall out over the details , the difference is your a collector first and do give a damn , I am only interested with what comes out of the speakers ,

all of this debate started when I stated that ovo was an obsticle which in my view younsters and aspiring women dj,s have to overcome , and the old entrenched hegemony of fat balding old boys who dominate the scene and have gathered the records over the years, and I think use the OVO to keep it elitist ,maybe this was a cackhanded generalisation but it has shaken some feathers :(

well I am for inclusion if we continue down the elitist route then we are doomed :hatsoff2:

Yep, hit the nail on the head; although that isn't the reason why certain folk object to boots, of course. Perhaps we should have a fresh legal system of royalties - let's call it Value Added Royalty - in which a dealer (or any other owner) has to pay over a %age of his profit on the sale of an original. Of course, we don't need a change in the law to outlaw fakes, be they records or owt else.

Elitism has been well proven to be the road to ruin in sport (especially) & many other aspects of life. It beggars belief - or would, other than for vested interests - that anyone advocates that the soundwaves from a speaker should be sourced from a single batch of original 45s in order to be legit. Their legitimacy arises not from their source, but their quality.

I'd wager that if you asked Spyder Turner (which you can, shortly) whether he would have preferred obscurity & rarity value by only being heard by a limited audience - as opposed to being widely known through boots & attaining the status of a NS deity, debuting in this country at his stage - he'd answer the latter.

Probably not put as eloquently as the above, but I think I'm correct in thinking Spyder Turner, or any other artist would have never been recognised in NS terms if the original release of any 45 had not been found and played, before it was ever bootlegged, the point being any artist may be grateful that their release was served to the masses via dodgy vinyl they must ultimately be grateful it was discovered in the first place, if this didn't happen there would be no 'latter' and won't be again,

Glad you can't argue with 340, personally I have no interest whatsoever what my 4 grown up kids think, in return neither have they any interest in my records, my only point is how will the thing move on, even at a snails pace (even the most dyed in the wool oldies fan warms to another tune every now and then) if everyone is pointlessly lugging the same box of 200 boots around?

That new discovery for that artist, that then gets booted won't happen surely?

Why do a fresh generation need to 'move on'? Why can't they just enjoy what we do/did?

I still enjoy ribs & cabbage; I like foreign food as well, but it ain't 'proper food' - if you get me drift.

By your guidelines it's OK for Natalie to remain within the boundaries of your history, carry a box of dodgy records that you wore your parents carpet out to, and that will keep the flame burning?

Back on topic, if you really expect todays 'technology smart' youth to carry heavy boxes of fake vinyl round for any length of time then I'm afraid it aint gonna happen, they either get the collecting bug (as some have) or it ain't happening,

think the days of someone going over to the states and rummaging round in some backstreet store/ warehouse / studio and finding a mint copy of an unknown never heard or played before monster northern soul hit have long gone . maybe from some studio master tape by some enterprising employee but not joe or jan punter , best we can look forward to are new music ,new covers , remixes which will all be found on this medium the internet

I hope the youngsters don't come on this web site too much. They'll be brainwashed into thinking the Soul scene is just one big argument. Starting to think that way myself.

the majority of folk on the soul scene dont come on here and if they do its for the events guide ..

there always will be the usual suspects on here and its a small dwindling band :yes:
