Hello All

I'm keen to learn of any (relatively) contemporary artists that are making music that soul fans believe maintain and build upon the heritage of the most creative soul music era of the 60's and 70's. So far I've found a limited number of recent releases (For example some tracks by Cody ChesnutT and Kylie Auldist fit the bill. Are others finding anything from current artists that would stand up to scrutiny against the giants of the past?

Try listening to Southern Soul Radio some great new music played on there , not of a Northern nature though.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings isn't bad although sometimes seems something of a 'pastiche' of what soul should be, but still better than most, especially that endless list of female British white R&B artists (usually with one name) that came along and queue around the block once Amy died & the record money men realised a new revenue stream, they get lorded to high heaven by our media but wouldn't know real soul if it walk right up a smacked them in the gob.

I also quite like The Frank Pops Ensemble.

Aid.

I saw Charles Bradley at Manchester's Band On The Wall last year, he tore the roof off the place. Best soul singer today and can't believe he only just got discovered a few years ago and had been working small bars only.

Here's a few suggestions, a couple of English guys first:

Si Cranstoun. He mainly performs in a 50s R&B style and his idol is Jackie Wilson.

His song 'Dynamo' is a homage to Reet Petite.

James Hunter. He writes almost all of his own material, again mainly in an R&B style.

Kirk Franklin

Raphael Saadiq

I used to be a big Robert Cray fan, but his songs now all sound so very similar and he seems stuck in a rut.

Also well-deserving of mention is San Francisco/LA's Nick Waterhouse, who's doing the "New Breed" R&B thing so flawlessly, in my opinion. Still kicking myself for selling this record...
