Dave Thorley Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 There is a growing call for Solar Radio to bring back 'Soul People' show to sunday mornings. Kenny Mac did a great job pulling this together over a number of years. If you miss it and want it back add your comments to this thread. Cheers Dave 1
Chalky Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 It was a must listen for me on a Monday mornings. Rarely caught it live downloaded every week thanks to Zane. Why was it stopped?
Dave Thorley Posted December 15, 2012 Author Posted December 15, 2012 I believe the station felt they needed something more middle of the road
Guest Nick Harrison Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 It's a crying shame our sunday morning service session's has gone. Never really got over the loss of Shaun Robbins and strings and things, who like Soul People was an listening institution between 10 am and 12 pm and all those well travelled soul representatives and oversea's jocks involved in this current, now axed show - it seems. 2
Rich B Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 My ironing is going to take a lot longer wothout it....
Guest Polyvelts Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Was a great show !! Highlight of my soul listening in 2012 for sure !
Guest Brett F Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Was my favourite radio show, hardly missed one, thanks to all the downloads Zane did, and if i was home and up i always listened in live, real loss to Radio Soul, such eclectic music played by everyone, the thing that worked for me, is it offered so much from the whole Soul spectrum. Sadly missed.
Mike Lofthouse Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I believe the station felt they needed something more middle of the road Because there is a real shortage of 'middle of the road' in this world !!! 3
Chris Anderton Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Yeah I loved the show, listened regularly.... Chris
Chalky Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 I loved the show, listened very Monday but surely the type of music played catered for a minority? I would love to see some listening figures? I presume the real reason it stopped was financial, listening figures didn't justify the cost? What would be the cost of Solar hosting a two hour show?
John Reed Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) Knowing the type of stuff played, which I enjoyed a lot as there were some very diverse guests. I would have thought it would have been hard to find a show sponsor as an ideal partner would have been a record dealer or shop. But that would have meant plugging their stock and I think the show moved a bit too exclusive musically to warrant that type of financial support. This is not meant to be a dig at any of the music played by the way. Edited January 2, 2013 by John Reed
Popular Post Steve Plumb Posted January 2, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2013 I was honoured to be associated with Soul People since it's birth in the summer of 2009 (and also the Sunday Soul Selection before that) until the summer of 2012, hosting/co-hosting 17 shows and engineering a further 6 shows for others in that time As has been said, the sponsorship is always going to be a problem because Solar need to raise huge amounts each month to stay on the Sky platform, so I'm guessing it needs big revenues from each show, either in sponsorship, or on a pay-to-play basis IMHO the more diverse or cutting edge the show, the harder it is going to be for mainstream advertising and i'm guessing this is what did for Soul People in the end, as it did lean towards real upfront/obscure/rare stuff (that's not a criticism, just my observation)? The folks' who were funding the show must have got to the point where they felt it wasn't justifying the spend? Saying that, the excellent Sunday Soul Selection (the show that ran for about three years prior to Soul People) played quality connoiseurs Soul Music each week and was sponsored by a Soul dealer and had tunes from their shop played each week and that went under too, so who knows what works? On the listening figures, these would be interesting BUT would need to be coupled with downloads, podcasts etc. I know Zane did it religously each week on EMS (top man!) and some of the guests (me included) put links on their/our own websites/facebook/twitter/itunes/forums etc, so it's do-able as long as these figures could be pulled together? That way, maybe a future advertiser could stay on top of things and get an idea of what they are spending their money on? Anyway, after about 6 years i'm still missing not sticking the radio on at 10am every Sunday (or downloading it if i was in a coma somewhere) and would love for Soul People to re-surface somewhere soon! Cheers Steve 6

Chalky Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 maybe if the shows could be recorded somewhere maybe make use of mixcloud?
Steve G Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Knowing the type of stuff played, which I enjoyed a lot as there were some very diverse guests. But that would have meant plugging their stock and I think the show moved a bit too exclusive musically to warrant that type of financial support. This is not meant to be a dig at any of the music played by the way. This is true enough John. And two of the leading specialist record shops already advertise with the station so they are not likely going to sponsor shows on top of paying for regular advertising. It's also true that it's getting harder and harder to assess listening figures with any degree of accuracy with the advent of shows being posted up on Facebook, Sonos, Mixcloud, Soundcloud and the like - not everyone listens at a fixed time anymore. The world is all changing........
Guest Nick Harrison Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 (edited) Because there is a real shortage of 'middle of the road' in this world !!! "Middle of the road" passed through this show - representatives of the Morecambe Weekender, The White Bull and Just Soul. Never a shortage IMHO. Edited January 4, 2013 by Nick Harrison
