Guest Dave Turner Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 (edited) Don't remember it Pete but just to say I used to love those "Hear sounds like" ads ... always the first thing I turned to in B&S etc. Made the anticipation of the coming weekend all the more exciting Edited December 13, 2012 by Dave Turner

Petedillon Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 Cromford is near Matlock...putting 2 & 2 together, I went to a place in Matlock which was in a pub(maybe in a cellar?) in early to mid 70's...cant recall exactly. Maybe I picked it up there?

KevH Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Olde English had a concrete sloping dancefloor. On Sunday nights as well .?
Guest Byrney Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Also had some nights mid 80s at old English. Fridays too
Guest Byrney Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Wondering where abouts this would be in Cromford. There's a pub I think at the bottom of Cromford hill on your right, there perhaps?
shelly Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Hi Pete The flier is from La Metro Cromford market place, to the left of the Greyhound pub/hotel as you face it. It's a red brick barn and the club was at the top of the steps in front, still in existence, but as a shop selling wicker baskets etc. Originally was a club(dead small in the late 60's, remember the name from older guys. The flier you have is from mid 73 after the Torch shut, Nicky who'd been DJ'ing at the Olde English in Matlock for years, fell out with the owner and opened up Le metro, lasted 2/3 weeksd before they kissed and made up and then moved back to the Old E. Suprised about your trip to Notts, as during '72/'73 every Friday, Thomo , Alan Stephenson , Mary Robertshaw(she was gorgeous) and another bird from Leeds came each Friday, purely for medicinal purposes. Shelly
Mak Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 (edited) The Greyhound was run by a pal of my late father-in-law at the time , a Polish guy called Gen . Nick (Mr Ferrari) Carter is still knocking around Matlock . I don't know the birds from Leeds , but I do remember Bridget form Matlock , I'm sure she had a brother who was rather ill , can anyone remember his name ? Edited December 15, 2012 by MAK
Kegsy Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Olde English had a concrete sloping dancefloor. On Sunday nights as well .? Ended up there once or twice with Mr Day. kegsy

Petedillon Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 (edited) Firstly it was the Ole English, and was in the cellar. As I say I dont know where I got the flyer from or when..might have been years later..maybe in with some other old stuff even. We visited the Old English after the Torch shut for sure..When in Yarmouth we met up with a ex-girlfriend of Alan Day who was a dancer on the pier in a show, cant recall her name though.. Shelly, it was def a friday night, in fact Dave Thommo was with me also a guy called Paul Moses from Leeds.. Stevo lives in the States now I believe or did last time I heard, think Eamon Connell is out there with him but not sure..Mary is still in Halifax I think..as Ive said on other threads, Dave dont wanna be found is the message Ive heard, though he is in Leeds I believe. Souljer6 Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 Pete, Ive been reading this thread, knowing most of those names both from Yorks & Derby's/ Notts, although I never heard Dave Thompson referred to as 'Thommo' Got some sad news: apparantly Eammon died in the summer. Liver cancer, presumably resulting from Hep C. Rich Hillel (from the right side of the Pennines!)
Petedillon Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 Hi Rich, how you doing over in the darkside? hows your better half doing, say hi from me.. should I have said..'Tommo'? he was commonly known as this mate, maybe not to the outside world but certainly around Leeds. Sad about Eammon, thanks for letting me know.
shelly Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 Olde English in fact was a normal disco, Nicky used to do an hour an half northern on Friday & Sats, Tuesday was more northern, less locals in. Nobody else DJ'd there( though Den Mac used to go along with the Gillanders brothers from Derby) except in the late 60's when it was Nick and Dallas, think they wanted to be Radio 1 DJ's! Re the concretet dance floor, you didn't go there to dance............................... Bridget got married and moved to Turkey, however, heard that a long time ago and so has probably returned; Thommo (my spelling and always knew him that way)can't be found, have tried all his ex wifes family and get blanked, Nobby from down this way doesn't know either, shame cause a great bloke. Remember all coming back from a Central allnighter back to Matlock and ended up chasing sheep in Chatswoth park at 8am, Thommo and a few others from Leed where there as there was a stash in the vacinity. Talking of that time, Thursday night at Nether Edge Sheffield, used to go up with Nicky, all the guys from Sheff and Rotherham -Mopsy, Steve Goodison, Bob Parker etc used to go and loads of fit birds, halcyon days the summer of 73. Anyone know what happened to Karen Evans? Shelly
Petedillon Posted December 17, 2012 Author Posted December 17, 2012 Yes recall chasing sheep in a mini in the breaking dawn for some reason..It was a totally northern night at the Olde English the night we were there Shelly.... I was a lot closer to Dave than most as he only lived about a mile and half from me, or should I say his mum did. He actually lived at my parents house for a while before we got the flat in Harehills, which is another story entirely.. heres a pic of me and dave in Yarmouth that weekend after Matlock..

Petedillon Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 yes we are in Whitelocks 12 bells.
Easty Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Regarding Dave Thomson, if you were one of the Leeds crowd he was definitely Tommo. I don't remember a Paul Moses from Leeds but if the guy with Tommo was a tall half caste lad he was Graham Moses one of the BeeGee crowd who formed the basis for the Wheel goers and the Northern crowd in Leeds in the late sixties and early seventies.
Petedillon Posted December 22, 2012 Author Posted December 22, 2012 my mistake Mick it was Graham..its an age thing..
