Anybody know?

I'm sure I've read this somewhere( a Tim Brown article maybe ) so I should know, but I can't remember!

Dolly Gilmore- Sweet Sweet Baby - Dove ...Is the release on the Canadian 'Right On' label by MS Dolly Gilmore - Sweet Sweet Man..legit? the same song, different title? was the label just a plagiarised version of Dave Godin's Right On label?

Idea's..

Hi Tony, I sort of collected the Right On label a couple of years ago. The Right On version is sligtly different. I like it more than the one on Dove but thats just me. I never understood the connection between the US and the UK label and also asked on here once if someone ould enlighten me. There was no really satisfying answer though.

Hi Marc, maybe that's why I can't remember the conclusion of the article..there wasn't one!! I suspected they were different cuts, same artist, but the label remains a bit of a mystery.

Thanks for the info mate, see you soon.

Wasn't Bill Downs (of New York; Ad Libs & Chris Bartley's manager) the link between the Canadian & UK Right On labels ??

He was a long term friend of Dave Godin's (I think Bill Downs was also gay) and licensed some tracks to DG.

I believe the Canadian Right On labels cuts were also sourced via Downs.

Of course, I may be well off the mark here, but that was always my understanding.

Bill Downs also licensed the old Chris Bartley tracks (Baby, I'm For Real / I Found A Goodie / Truer Words Were Never Spoken / The Sweetest Thing This Side Of Heaven) to Move Records (of Edinburgh) in the mid 80's.

The Right On version of 'Sweet sweet baby' is very different from the slower version on Dove (actually named 'Sweet sweet man' but the same song). Right On version is later, funkier and discoeyer and is much longer too!

T'other side of Right On and Dove releases are different songs though, one being a Crossover classic (Dove) and the other a similar funky discoey dancer (Right On)

Cheers

Right On was owned by Bill Downs.

I know because Bill used the Right On trading name to licence to me in the 70's mastes to release on Inferno --

New York In The Dark - The Ad Libs

You Don't Mean Me No Good - Jelly Beans

Come Back - Fantastic Puzzles

and Dave was not involved in those deals

Bill also acted as middle man for us to buy outright the master to

Your Autumn Of Tomorrow - The Crow

which had been previously releaseed by DG on UK Right On. Again Dave was not involved in the deal

Bill at one stage was very close to Dave Godin. He was aso friendswith Van McCoy and was the DO in the VANDO label. Van was the VAN, We tried to release some Van McCoy masters via Bill, but Van was so busy with his post "Do The Hustle" disco career he did not have the time to deal with it.

There also is an ad-libs 45 that only came out on Canadian right on ("Dance with me children").

I think there's another (Canada) right-on 45 that books for something, can't remember what it is.

Sammy Gaha - found one at a record show in Toronto and bought it just because of the UK Right On label, was very shocked to discover its value and moved it on sharpish. There is also a couple of right stinkers on the Canadian label but they have slipped my mind
