I`m on a bit of a Major Lance spree at the moment and have just picked up a copy of "Too Hot To Hold " on Okey.I`d appreciate it if somebody could put up a sound clip of this as I`m sure there will be a few new fans to this track I think it`s awsome.I`m not sure what airtime it`s had but I`m gonna give this some spins very shortly.Would appreciate a sound clip.

thanks

Andy

awesome record

Thanks Dan,I managed to get one of the first issue white demos, the one with the larger 45 on the lable.I``ve seen a few of the later issues with the small 45 on it for not that much cash so it was a real find to get a proper one.

Great record! I've yet to see a large 45 issue, as far as I know this is was the only first issue okeh record to have a small 45.

I have large 45 w/d and 10" Okeh acetate.

Cheers

Hi,

I bought a British Columbia copy about 1975 from a mate having a bit of a sell off, hadnt heard it, just took a chance - as you do. Well worth it, great record, dont remember hearing it at northern nights, maybe at the 6Ts nights in London before the 100 Club started.

Quite a few years back now, Butch played it at Droylesdon allnighter. On the night in question he'd actually left his DJ box at home and had to play from his sales box. I remember this record as its one I was raised on, and can still remember dancing and singing my head off to it!

Heres a tip from a VERY fussy lady - PLAY IT ph34r.gif

Hey, I hadn't heard this Major Lance record before, but the same song was recorded by the Majorlettes on RCA, a girl group version that, if I recall right, is just a little bit faster. I wonder if the name "Majorlettes" had anything to do with Major Lance!? They sure sound like the same backup group

Dan I`ve seen a few with the small 45 from £10 - £30 depending on condition, the larger 45 in good nick £100+.It`s a real tuffy to track down.

Like many, many things this has been chronically overlooked and taken for granted. Had a couple of these, (with a little wear) sat in the box for absolutely eons @ £10, and people kept passing 'em by, looking for a "Bill Bush" or "Gene Toones". Speaks volumes.

Andy,

The DEMOs have the large 45rpm. the STOCK copies have (as far as I know) the small 45RPM. I've never seen a stock copy with a large 45rpm So DAN we need that scan! (that rhymes)

It was never reissued in the Selectadisc batch of Little Richard, Billy Butler, Major lance etc in 1972. (ther was no demand for it)

I know for years Belgium collectors (the first Okeh fanatics) have search for the STOCK with a large 45.

Peter Hulatt the Okeh compleatist may throw more light on it. Peter are you out there?

BUT the the small 45 are the first presses on this title, which i know goes against all the rules. If it does exist with a large 45rpm it is extremely RARE.

Anyone out there own a stock with a large 45 text..send me a scan please to

John@raresoulman.co.uk

The "You Don't Want Me No More" stock copy has a large 45rpm. That's in the MILLION DOLARS of soul book.. as are a few rare Okeh presses. Would love to see an OKEH "Too Hot To Hold" large 45rpm as it's a bit of a legend really..

Sorry mate, didn't know Tom Walsh was the famous Pete Hulatt well if you and me have never seen a large 45 on "Too Hot To Hold" I guess it may not exist. Or we both need to see the scan..sure would be great to see a lost legend..

It was the first Major Lance record I ever got. Must have paid all of a quid for a UK issue back in '71. I was told back then it was a fave at the Wheel, but that was probably a bit of hype from the guy on the market stall!

Still love it - especially the backing vocals.

If that counts, Malayka played it regularly at our SoulShakers dos over here in Bamberg about two years ago.

She has one with a small 45rpm, but for a find in a recordstore in Switzerland @ 1 Franc, not bad... (would also fit to the 57p thread)

best, Martin
