Gotta be worth a view With a Hollywood biopic and a musical currently in production, this is a timely portrait of 1960s icon and legendary "white lady of soul" Dusty Springfield. The lengthy performance clips are heavenly and will have you itching to slap on the mascara, backcomb your hair and gesture dramatically. There's also some rare American footage, but many of the interviews are too brief to be of value. Burt Bacharach, for instance, utters just two sentences about the unique quality of her voice, while Baby Washington, whose song Doodles was covered by Dusty, merely gets to say she did a good version. Others talk about Dusty's sexuality, drug use, depressions and self-mutilation, although these details won't be a revelation to diehard fans. However, as a celebration of her work, this is a treat - and after all, her music speaks for itself.

On the plus side, some great unseen clips, great to see Baby Washington, she looked fantastic, didn't even realise that Dusty had recorded 'Doodlin'! They should have interviewed Vicki Wickham for longer and what about interviewing Madeline Bell, Kiki Dee and some of the backroom staff at Philips involved with her productions. Clips with Jerry Wexler and co were also good.

But I know it was aimed at the general public, just thought that it was a bit rushed, and although I'm not a fan of Dusty's later stuff, 70's, 80's, & 90's seemed to be overlooked. That's all. Halfwitted, I don't think I;m that bad! Being half funny mate . For a 1 hour programme I think it was fine, as you say, difficult to fit it all in and it did touch on her later collaborations e.g with the Pet Shop Boys etc. Obviously her most successful period was the 60s which was reflected in the programme. A truly great voice and a sad loss. Rich
Mak Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Brilliant programme on a BRILLIANT singer no doubt in my mind the best female voice this country has ever produced. I did find it rather sad in parts.There seemed to be a black artist trying to break out of a white artist, I have no doubt about that. Toped with her sexuality and her social problems it's a wonder she ever dazzled us with her pure soulful voice. For all you younger members out there get hold of some of her eary stuff it will knock your socks off. The shit thing is I lost all my Dusty albums a few years ago.
