Simon M Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Did you go to The Scene club.. if so what was it like
Guest Ste Brazil Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 The music which dominates the scene is R&B if we are talking about so called 'proper' Mod do's, there are other nights such as the Untouchable's do's where you have a mix of Mods / Skinheads and Psyche/Hippie types, but at a Mod only event i would say it is at least 85% R&B - Also the reason i dont go to these nights anymore I prefer the current soul scene, better music & generally easier going people, though as with anything, good and bad on both scenes! Ste.
Bigsoulman Posted April 4, 2006 Author Posted April 4, 2006 Did you go to The Scene club.. if so what was it like Different end of the country Simon, i'm from Edinburgh where clubs like McGoos, The Place, The International and The Gamp were top mod shops and they always played a good mixture but soul was my number one although at a recent Friday Street promotion where my son was in a band I was knocked out by the beat/psych records that were being played, Lenny

I always thought it had everything, probably the most fascinating youth culture for me. . Some of me mates still dress like Mods and play in a band called Voodoo Boiler , but that may have changed . Interesting story about London mods from that era, a load of them came up to Edinburgh at the owner of the clubs invite and they could'nt believe the sound that were playing in the club that night, an old friend of mine who used to dj there said they were asking him for The Crystals and The Ronettes , and believe this or not a couple of them had sales boxes!, two of which I still have today, Mel Torme--Comin Home Baby and Sharon Tandy--Hold On, but the clothes they were wearing were unbelievable compared to the rubbish we had in the shops up here, great days and memories Lenny
Mace Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Recall Dj Dom ( Where is he now ? ) ATB Rich Dom Bassett - last saw him at 'The Underground' weekender at Skegness about 7 years ago. Gamba has reappeared on London Scene, seen him posting on Modculture, presume he would know of Doms whereabouts nowadays???

pow wow mik Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 (edited) We put on a mod do in Sheffield that so far has been a great success. I put my later set up on a mod site so might as well put it here to show what we play. I dont suppose I'm representative of the whole scene, but this is what I played and it went down well, played similar at Mousetrap too, so I guess it's fairly popular at the moment. Nothing revolutionary, but it was to a packed full dancefloor in the last hour. Earlier on, I played probably more deeper R&B maybe. (It's the Pow Wow club and the next one's 15th July by the way, at the DNR Live club Sheffield ...all mods, ex-mods & soulies & everyone welcome! ) Chantels - Indian Giver Kingsize Taylor - Somebody's always trying Troy Dodds - The real thing John Andrews - It's just love Curtis Lee - Is she in your town Bo Jr - Coffee Pot Lloyd & Glenn - mini skirts & go go boots thingy & thingy - thing and thing thing thingy Victoria Williams - Show some sign Benny Spellman - this is for you my love Tobi Lark - sweep it out in the shed Barbara Lynn - i dont want a playboy Johnathan Capri - gonna build a mountain Otis Lee - Hard Row to hoe Thingy Thingy - i can't go Cleveland Robinson - work song Oscar Brown Jr - Humdrum Blues Tony Middleton - Spanish Harlem Tito Puente - hit the bongo Billy Hawks - Oh Baby I believe I'm losing you Little Nicky Soul - I wanted to tell you Jasper Woods - hully gully papa Ernie Washington - Lonesome Shack Baby Huey - Monkey Man Mike Pedicin - Burnt toast and black coffee Joanne Campbell - I changed my mind jack Manny Corchado - Pow wow Edited April 4, 2006 by mik parry

Daved Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 A few Fave sounds from that era - Mr Dynamite - Sh'mon Can anyone put an mp3 or suchlike up of this please.
Guest Stuart T Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 Rodge Martin - Close My Eyes (& Open Up My Mind) (Newark) Forris Woods - Stoned On Love (Abbott) Russ Lewis - Brand New Recipe (Sharp) Troy Dodds - The real thing Billy Hawks - Oh Baby I believe I'm losing you Great sounds on your and Mik's playlists, although I didn't have the Forris Woods in my mind as particularly modish! Rodge Martin needs more spins. Great revelation came for me in about 1984 when Paul Hallam knocked out a couple of cassettes of what he was playing, fantastic stuff across the board like Thelma Harper Unchain My Heart, Mr Dynamite, Maximillian, Soul Sisters Good Times Tonight, Leavin' Here (think it was the Birds version), Bo Street Runners, King of Kings, all sorts of wonderful stuff that was representative of what was being played at the time.
Guest Andy BB Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 It definitely varies depending on whereabouts in the country you are. Last time I went to a do in Scotland it was much more across the board than you'd ever see in London. The bit in between generally seems to be an RnB stronghold. London has a couple of factions, one with a definite anti-Northern Soul bias and the other, (New Untouchables) much more Soul friendly (Guest DJs at the next allnighter me and Val Palmer. Goal!). They run alternative allnighters for those who want Soul/RnB and those who want freak/psyche/garage.

uni ted Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 what have mods got do with anything soulfull, soul music was never a big part of the orig mod scene,we are talking the WHO etc who were a big part of the mod scene, nothing wrong with that, but why have all these revivalist mods hooked onto the northern scene,i am a soul boy, been nowt else all my life, apart from an occasional football hooligan, which has got nothing to do with my taste in music anyway. so why dont all latter day mods bog off, listen to the who and hammond organ music, and leave the soul scene well alone.

Ted Me & most of my friends were mods to start with, probably quite a few people on here too. That's how I got into soul music when I became a mod at 13. The music I was listening to then is pretty much what I listened to now & no I never liked The Who either. Soul music was quite a big part of the mod scene in my opinion, cant speak about in the 60's as I wasnt born then, but it was in the 80's. I take it you arent a mod fan then Ted, I'll see if I can dig out one of my old mohair suits for Saturday at Piercebridge especially for you Kirstyxx

pow wow mik Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 I think mods would have been listening to soul before anyone else in this country, depends on where you date the birth of 'soul' I suppose. To me, the mod ethic is not about liking what 60s mods liked anyway (although it's a myth that mods liked the Who by the way), it's about liking quality music, which (arguably ) justifies them liking northern soul.
