Expensive To Cheap

I was sitting here pondering something the other night. People keep mentioning about records that are cheap now and that may become more expensive to buy in the future (cheapies becoming biggies). Or they talk about when they bought records for 50p that now go for a few hundred pounds and upwards, but have there been any that have come down drastically in price?

For instance I bought Danny Moore - Somebody New on Allrite for £35 from a member on here. Whilst speaking to Brett at Prestatyn he remarked that he'd paid more for his copy in the past. Not too sure, but think he said in the past someone had paid £800 for a copy! I first heard it on that 4 CD box set Sought After Soul and in the notes it says that someone was going to sell a car to get a copy. Mind you it didn't state the value of the car.

Anyway getting to the point, have there been any records that when first discovered/played out cost a fortune, but can now be picked up for next to nothing?

i also heard that kenny burrell paid a grand for his copy. however when i spoke to him a while back at Samanthas he said he believes the copies i had were not the same as his???

maybe someone else can add more facts?

The car swap copy of Danny Moore was a demo, believe it was the copy that was originally played. The lot that turned up weren't demos, if I remember right. At one stage people were alleging that the issues weren't originals but I've had one side by side with the demo and wasn't aware of any difference in their pressing. Think the labels were the same apart from the promo wording. Not sure if anyone actually got to the bottom of whether they were real. Great record though

There have been a few dodgy cases of people holding stuff back to hike the prices though.

- Certainly does - Fantastic record - Old Butch cover up wasn't it? Rich Domar I think found a pile . Went down to as low as £20 - Paid £40 for mine - One that may well nestle in collections .

Not connected as far as I know. No allegations that Dream Team was recorded in last six or seven years whereas it was obvious with the Four Vandals. The allegation is that the sellers had quantity but denied it. Was asked for £2000 by one person selling!

on this thread generally loads of things have come down in price over the years. i think there's never been a better time to collect vinyl (contrary to what i've thought before) because in real terms it's cheaper than it ever was as long as you're not after big stuff and you can wait. if you sit on ebay you see lots of stuff go buy at reasonable prices and if you buy stuff from one dealer and let him stack it up till there's 10-20 45s postage is negligible.

if you're buying 'current monsters' it's a pricey game of course.

I doubt it, rare as the proverbial rocking horse sh*t peppered with hen's teeth!. Bast'rd thing took me nearly 24 years to get; thanks you Carl Forntum & Alan Dawes. Strange thing is since I've had it (about 14 months now) only ever played it a couple of times! Like that elusive lass you've been wanting to form a deep and meaningful relationship with since youth club? :-)

Part 2 is the best side, wonder who the saxophonist was?

Price droppers have a habit of bouncing back at times, we all remember copies of Betty Lloyd turning up and price dropping, picked my copy at this time for £40 look at the price now, so good time to buy price droppers if it's the RIGHT record.

Picked one up on ebay the other night, £35. A real builder of a record that deserves more plays.

We got quantity on Danny Moore by simply looking thru the Detroit phone book for the writer's name which was J. Massingille. He was dead I think [i wasn't actually there with Dave] but we got his cousin and after a couple of days he came up with the 45s. 100% original and not to be confused with the bootlegs. We weren't the first to get to the guy as Tim Ashibene/Greg Tormo had got copies a lot earlier but hadn't taken them all. Maybe they didn't know he had more.

In same way I got a few copies of Dynamics "Whenever..." by looking up Merlino in Detroit phone book. Got his son who put me in touch with his dad now residing in East Texas. Interesting guy. War hero, connected to Italian businessmen, built Terra Shirma studios and not least bit interested in soul music, more Italian crooners. I think he said Chico Holiday was recorded in 63 and I said that the backing sounds a lot later which was when he mentioned Terra Shirma and the way he'd constructed the studio, which being a technical ignoramous just went over my head.

Next time you're in LA why not try Fred Smith in the phone book!!!
