Just seen this in the Wigan Observer News section on line:-

Legendary Northern Soul venue to be re-built as part of "Wigan" theme park experience.

Way back in the far off days of the 1970s people travelled from all parts of the country and the world to visit the former Empress Ballroom on Station Road.

Gerry Marshall the buildings lease holder re-invented the run down building as Wigan Casino Club, a cabaret venue. Every Saturday night northern Soul all-nighters were held and famous artist appeared - flow in from the U.S.A. for just one off performances at The Casino Club.

The all-nighters ran until 1981, then the site was earmarked for re-development, the building caught fire and scaffolding covered the building. As the building had been earmarked in a secret document as of "National Cultural Importance" (NCI) it was secretly taken down brick by brick and stored in a disused cotton mill near Bolton.

A project has been underway to rebuild the building on its original site, which is still waiting redevelopment. However Dave Whelan owner of the Wigan based JJB sports empire has donated land to the rear of the JJB Stadium to house an international festival of all things relating to Wigan, the centre piece will be the re-built Empress Ballroom.

"This a great opportunity to celebrate our culture, we have searched the country for all things relating to the Casino Club and intend to run the all-nighters again every week. We have the building in storage and will rebuild it brick by brick, we even have the original plans from 1912 and have a specialist team on hand to recreate the plaster on the ceiling. A series of microscopic pipes will be installed to run inside the ceiling and at pre-determined intervals a mixture of pure nicotine and salt water will be dripped from the pipes on to the people below. Chewing gum has been collected from the streets of Wigan to be worked into the fabric of the carpet to be laid inside. The original carpet was damaged when it was cleaned up by a fireman hose after the fire, so a new carpet was made to the original design and is currently laid on runway one of Manchester Airport to add authentic wear to it, the chewing gum will then be placed in to the pile by hand to re-create the "sticky Velcro walking feeling".

In a chance discovery 3,000 pies, still in their wrappers from the original pie shop on the balcony, an elderly worker had taken the pies home to build a garage in his garden and never got around to doing it, these will be on sale as soon as the "sell by 03/78"Etc have be removed from the wrappers. Pies with sell by dates which are Wigan Anniversaries will be auctioned on E-Bay at a later date ."

"We have searched out all the original members of the Casino team although we were in talks Richard Searling we missed the transfer deadline from the modern scene and he has to D J at Paris Hiltons sister's (our Blackpool )30th birthday party before we can make another bid. Original DJ Russ Winstanley was very reluctant at first to get involved with the JJB team as he thought we should just treat the Casino as a fond memory , not to be continually and pointlessly raked up and gone over & over. However Russ the saw the size of Dave's transfer cheque book and decided to give it a go."

As we search back for our cultural roots we also intend to buy the rights to the "Casino Classic's" record label and we are also desperately trying to find original members Wigan's Ovations, Wigan's Chosen Few and Nosmo King or any of The Javelles, we think with the smoking ban coming into force soon Nosmo King will be a "happening "kind of guy. (anyone who knows where these acts are hiding in Detroit should contact the Wigan Observer).

Original memberships will be valid at the new venue, however anyone wanting a new membership should contact Avril Loof by 12 noon today on Wigan 0104 2006

Known as 'Mr.Northern Soul'. Kev's career dates back to the early 70's when as a DJ at the famous Wigan Casino club kick-started a Music and Radio career producing artists such as Edwin Starr, Junior Walker, Linda Lewis, Mai-Tai, Bizzare Inc among many others.

Born in Wirksworth, Derbyshire before moving to Notts, he wrote the book 'The Northern Soul Top 500' and pulls staggering audiences in the over 35's market.

I'd book this one as well :shades: Heard there were a few "Staggering" at Ilkeston last night !!!!
