Guest martyn Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 All this talk about 7ts....it was the 8ts in West London home of QPR the smartest casual firm (we had stuarts clothing shop on the uxbridge rd) calling themselves the fila mob or the older lads were the c (coach) mob,off to meet luton at st pancras or see off our northern mates at euston, white city estate overlooking our little ground was great on evening games as away fans found themselves lost, the bush green was a muddy battlefield..Arrrgh happy days before i saw the light and found real soul music, not the shitty casual 8ts crap i grew up with as a youngster. Crumb Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Saw plenty of fights inside nighters in the mid to late 70's but they were over drugs, not football. Walking from the station to the Casino could be a bit scary though, relatively few locals ( they weren't soulies, don't know about football fans ) used to wait for us and hassle us. If all the soulies had stuck together we would have easily seen them off but I suppose most of us were wary of attracting attention in case we got busted. One local lad pulled a knife on me and my mate one night but did a runner when my mate produced his dad's bread knife from his addidas bag. Stunner, just like that scene in Crocodile Dundee where he says "call that a knife" Some locals tried to have a go at Yate once but everyone stuck together and the locals that couldn't run fast enough got a right kicking Crumb

Guest Rowly Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Mid to late 80's and I was doing West Ham Full time home & away with a mate from Hastings. - plenty of scraps (got nicked twice) and got on the outer fringes of the ICF. I came to my senses and decided to go another direction. He didn't. He got Badly hurt at Tottenham away in 96 and then got nicked a year later and ended up doing 2 years inside. Glad I got out of it!

Guest Andy BB Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Shane there's a couple of books about the Soul Crew. They used to have a few Mods with them too - get mentions in a lot of books, seem to remember a bit about their lads in parkas in Kevin Sampsons excellent Awaydays book. Here's the synopsis o the Soul Crew book from Amazon The Inside Story of Britain's Most Violent Hooligan Gang; The Cardiff Soul Crew are recognised by police intelligence officers as the most violent football hooligan gang currently active in Britain. Their 400-plus members have been involved in mass disorder at matches for more than twenty-five years. Yet they have largely escaped the notoriety of their English counterparts - until now. Two men closely involved with the gang tell its history from its origins through to the present day: their leaders, their fashions, how they organise and who they fight. "Soul Crew" relates how an infamous clash with Manchester United's Red Army in the mid-Seventies was the impetus for the formation of the mob. A core group of hardcases from the tough Docks area of Cardiff was joined by alienated, unemployed youths from the valleys and former pit villages of South Wales. They took their name from their love of soul music and adopted the 'casual' fashion of designer-label clothes. In time they would fight fierce battles with rivals like the Frontline Crew, the Bushwhackers, the Gooners and the Central Element. "Soul Crew" also reveals for the first time the network of alliances and communications between the leading hooligans around the country: the so-called "Category C" thugs who organise much of the violence. And it tells of their cat-and-mouse relationship with the police spotters who now follow them everywhere From the publishers of the best-selling Guvnors and Blades Business Crew, "Soul Crew" is the best evocation yet of life running with a soccer mob. Bunch of girls compared to the infamous 1980s Super Hoopsaa mind you

Its a bit of everton folklore that the everton boys got one of their worst ever kickings away to OPR Not so much the OPR fans but the locals from white city Fact stranger than fiction
Nick Hackett Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 (edited) Its a bit of everton folklore that the everton boys got one of their worst ever kickings away to OPR Not so much the OPR fans but the locals from white city Fact stranger than fiction 1983/84..heard a young evertonian named andy cc (name changed!) went wondering off alone on the white city looking for new garments to wear, saw a lacoste tshirt hanging up drying on the balcony and snatched it,off he ran into the crowds...now the owner of the tshirt managed to catch a glimpse of a half everton/celtic bobble hat outside his front door, fuming he rounded up all his brothers and sisters declaring war on the visiting away fans..never let a scouse near your house were the cries, war was declared all thanks to a young......andy cc. Joking aside Darren, these were rough times not just in west london but all over the country, football violence was part n parcel of growing up with your mates, most have grown out of it but a few still are active,i truly believe soul music brings this great country together, and not dividing it like football, most of my mates are now northern ..years ago would of been enemys..soul the savour..north and south united in one room, singing ,dancing n cryin along to a belting, beautiful 6ts tune..gets no better than that mate. ave it!! Guest Byrney Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 terraceretro.com anybody? Yep! Only footy lads site worth viewing in my Opinion. Love the Banter from AH, Superega, K et al (who is Kerso BTW, an old face from the Shotts Nighters). Anyone remember Clifton Hall or Odd fellows early 80s, plenty of hoolies around at the time, if the Sergio Techini and Fila Bj count is owt to go by. Out of the Forest Mob there was always a few who did nighters on a regular basis, Derby lads as well: Dennis Cross for one, one of the old main boys back in the day. Differences always put aside at nighters, remember one of Derbys lads came bouncing over to me at the Oddfellows, thought it was a kick off as he recognised me from Forest, seconds later he was hugging me spouting on about Silky Hargreaves
Guest lifeandsoul Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Only Just caught this thread and haven't read it all, but back to the start - I know Chris Brown (being a gashead myself!). He still goes to the footy and i see him from time to time. The dj's who formed the Avon Soul Army (mentioned in the book) are still around and are behind or connected to Bristol's Soul train, who probably still run some of the biggest soul nights in the country - but Bristol and Northern have never really mixed and Bristol soul boys predominantly took a different direction. Nonetheless it is still heavily in to Soul, but its a totally different scene. Personally i would go to Wigan or Yate one week, then somewhere like Princess Court the other and the various (jazz funk) soul clubs in Bristol in the week. Chris is heavily into Jamaican Music and joins in some forums as Pressure Drop

spike1 Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 1976 fridays we got the midnight train to Sheffield from chesterfield Samantha's opened at 2am the train was full of soulies from Leicester Derby Nottingham Mansfield And chesterfield I didn't see any bother on that train Saturday afternoon st the match we would have been trying to rip each other's throats out Strange World of Northern Soul speedy spike
hullsoulie Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Haven't read all this thread so there is a chance I offered my two-pennorth worth years ago, but..... I hit 16 in 1980, unlike some of my school-mates who DID attend Wigan I never did, started at Clifton Hall, hitch-hiking every nighter with a mate, first to Thorne near Donny, then a 2p bus ride to Rotherham - spent many a morning after a nighter huddled under a motorway bridge like a drowned rat and wondering how/when we'd get home - Youth Opportunities Program (my arse) only paid £29 per week so take your board off and resources were limited. Most of the younger attendees from Hull were terrace urchins too, saving up for a trip to the North West to get stuff nobody in Hull had, as soon as we walked into Clifton Hall it was inevitable that like would identify, and interest, like - among the older lads in patch festooned vests, flares and brogues if we saw someone in a Slazzy tank top over a Le Coq t-shirt with tight jeans on and Kio Riders/Trainers we were drawn, first to stare/suss, then macho posturing, then finally making chat with each other - that's how I met Boro lads like Paul 'The Brick' Debrick and his mates, and some lads from Sheff Utd - many of these (who have not been sadly lost over the years) are still in contact and attend nighters together. I am fully aware that many of the older attendees would probably have equally 'full' terrace cv's from the early/mid 70s, but us younger element always seemed to stick together and do our own thing. Made me smile re the posts about QPR and White City as I moved to London for a decade 89-99 and lived in W3/W6 - I used to drink in the Goldhawk, Smuts and Springbok and it certainly was a tasty 'manor' Speaking of the Soul Crew, they played at Craven Cottage circa 94-95? and I was sat outside the Golden Gloves/Suffolk Punch down Fulham Palace rd when a large mob arrived, sure a mixture of Fulham, QPR and maybe even a few Chelsea (MG ran with both of them at that time) some Cardiff vans pulled up, there was a bit of a stand off, throwing of bottles etc - I stood up and faced the Welsh lads, not out of a love of violence or bravado but the fact they were hoying stuff at me - when it calmed down some of the Londoners nodded to me and I heard one of them say 'Facking Leeds have sent a spotter down' in reference to my Yorkshire rose tattoo - I didn't have the heart to tell him I lived 300m away off King St Hammersmith. As other posters have stated, as you mature you realise we're all the same, just from a different postcode and with a different accent - but many of the main Hull soulies of my era were football lads Many thanks for reading
WalesKTF Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 On 3/29/2006 at 22:12, ShaneH said: Cardiff's boys are called the 'soul crew' or something similar. Pete-S will no doubt wanna get in on this Shane Cardiff City's infamous Soul Crew football hooligans were given the name by a guy called Nicky Parsons, in 1979. He was a year above me in school so new him quite well. He was one of the 'leaders' of one of the football hooligan gangs frequenting Cardiff City's infamous Grange End, at Ninian Park. Various areas and estates in Cardiff, the surrounding towns and the valleys, had their own gang leaders, and quite often violence would flare between the rival groups, only coming together if there was a large firm of away fans coming to Cardiff. The two best examples I can remember were Man Utd in Sept '74, Millwall, March '76, and Spurs, Jan '77. There were loads of others, but those two always stick in my memory. Parsons named his gang of Cardiff City hooligans on the back of the release of the Quadraphonic film, and the mod revival of '79-81. He was to my mind anyway, (others may tell you differently) one of the first people, if not the first, to try to unite all the different gangs, particularly when going away supporting The Bluebirds and looking for a fight with an opposing team's football hooligans, or if a large firm were coming down to South Wales attempting to 'take' the Grange End. Previous to that he had been a skinhead and a suede head, well at least in comprehensive school anyway. He became a bit of a punk in '77, but turned mod in '79. Gradually the name 'Soul Crew' became adopted by all Cardiff City football hooligans as time went on. Parsons though, never lasted that long though as he was rascist. He might have been charismatic and mouthy, but he had no real bottle to back his words up. One of the last places to be racist back in the 70s was Cardiff, particularly with it's multi racial Tiger Bay or Docks area. Quite a few of the lads on the Grange End were from that area. Eventually he was given the heave-ho, threatened with a beating and never returned to Ninian Park, at least from what I am aware anyway. So there you are, the story of how the 'Soul Crew' got it's name, and it's tenuous at best link to soul music. 1
Davenpete Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Regardless of some soulies also being into football etc, the original question is based on a fundamental confusion - conflating 'soul boys' with 'northern soul boys' is incorrect - soul boys are what casuals called themselves initally (at least round my way). Dx

Dx I can remember, there was a special on tv about some of the bank holiday violence that had had happened, late 70's early 80's, I can distinctly remember frank Bough describing the different factions, punks, skins, mods ect and soulboys, as you said Dave it was a catch all preliminary term for casuals, before the term was invented. we used to call them normal round are way, we had Chell heath skins and the Norton normals.
