Just heard this for the first time. It's very similar in the most part to a "Watts 103rd St Band" album track. Is "Zu Zu Man" an L.A. recording?

I have this written down in my wants book, it tells me it's on A&M, to be honest cannot recall what it sounds like. Simon was it released on another label ?

It's a Mac Rebennack (a.k.a Doctor John) track, under the name The Zu Zu Blues Band... covered as "Brown Sugar" by the Watts 103rd St Band.

Cheers chaps.

Just dug out "Brown Sugar" on a 45 of the shelf - the credits are Rebennack/Hill so presumably 'Zu Zu Man' is the first version ? Has anyone got a "Zu Zu Man" label scan at all ?

Here's The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band anyway

That was a terrible version

I'd take this version any day:

Cheers Lars-not a great version is it? The other side of the UK 45 is a version of 'The Joker" which is even weaker.

But it starts to add up a bit now- if Charles Underwood is the same guy who had releases on 'Loma' as Charlie Underwood and The Glide Band.. Loma was a Warner Brothers label...and Fred Smith produced 'Brown Sugar' which came out on Warner Brothers and Fred Smith also produced Bob and Earl and The Olympics on Loma...which connects with Charles Underwood !

I'd disagree about the Watts Band being a terrible version. It was the only version I have known for 33 years, and it was quite a big sound at one time. I do like the Zu Zu Band version though. First time I've heared it.

I got the feeling it was being played on toy instruments. Too poppy maybe. But then I haven't heard it out and I have no memories attached to it.
