Guest Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Just heard this for the first time. It's very similar in the most part to a "Watts 103rd St Band" album track. Is "Zu Zu Man" an L.A. recording?

I have this written down in my wants book, it tells me it's on A&M, to be honest cannot recall what it sounds like. Simon was it released on another label ?
Richard Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 (edited) It was in the sound gallery on here, in fact I think 2 people posted it Edited March 25, 2006 by richard
pikeys dog Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 It's a Mac Rebennack (a.k.a Doctor John) track, under the name The Zu Zu Blues Band... covered as "Brown Sugar" by the Watts 103rd St Band.
Guest Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Cheers chaps. Just dug out "Brown Sugar" on a 45 of the shelf - the credits are Rebennack/Hill so presumably 'Zu Zu Man' is the first version ? Has anyone got a "Zu Zu Man" label scan at all ?
Guest Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Here's The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band anywayBROWN_SUGAR_2.mp3
Larsc Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Here's The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band anyway That was a terrible version I'd take this version any day:
Guest Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Cheers Lars-not a great version is it? The other side of the UK 45 is a version of 'The Joker" which is even weaker. But it starts to add up a bit now- if Charles Underwood is the same guy who had releases on 'Loma' as Charlie Underwood and The Glide Band.. Loma was a Warner Brothers label...and Fred Smith produced 'Brown Sugar' which came out on Warner Brothers and Fred Smith also produced Bob and Earl and The Olympics on Loma...which connects with Charles Underwood !
Guest rachel Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 That was a terrible version I'd take this version any day: Aaahhh is that what that is Heard it out somewhere recently, but didn't know what it was..

Larsc Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 $227 https://cgi.ebay.com/ZU-ZU-BLUES-BAND-45-RP...1QQcmdZViewItem Rookie has one for sale here: https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26670
Paul R Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 That was a terrible version I'd take this version any day: I'd disagree about the Watts Band being a terrible version. It was the only version I have known for 33 years, and it was quite a big sound at one time. I do like the Zu Zu Band version though. First time I've heared it. Paul
Guest martyn Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 That was a terrible version I'd take this version any day: Why is it a terrible version?Still does it for me after all these years.
Larsc Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Why is it a terrible version?Still does it for me after all these years. I got the feeling it was being played on toy instruments. Too poppy maybe. But then I haven't heard it out and I have no memories attached to it.
