Popular Post Andyj Posted December 5, 2012 Popular Post Posted December 5, 2012 Following a recent post which covered OVD I recently invested in a record player and dug out what's left of my record collection. As this dates from the late 70s/early eighties there are number of tracks that I thought were class back in the day but now sound crap, 'Ral Donner' 'Don't let it slip away' for one, has anyone got similar tracks that were cool and now crap? As a footnote played Dooley Silverspoon, Game Players and still loved it! 4
Guest MrC Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 There's loads! And there's been a few threads about this very subject already. I posted 'Gameplayers' in the 'record of the day' thread about a week ago, didn't like it then, but thought it sounded pretty good when I'd found an old copy and played it at home the day before. Weird huh?! I think drugs have a lot to answer for with regards to answers to your original question though! Paul: We'll never win the war on drugs.... we'd be too out of it to aim properly.....
Jim G Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 "Game Players" is class I bought it new in 1975 and still love it. 2
Jordirip Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 "Game Players" is class I bought it new in 1975 and still love it. Flip it over. 1
Rich B Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I don't think I still have the 45 of 'Gameplayers'- but I do still have the album - is the flip (and what is it) on there?

Pete S Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Ral Donner has always been shit and will always be shit. He is still doing the rounds as an Elvis tribute act. Peter No he's not, he's been dead for 25 years! he was never an Elvis tribute, he was an Elvis copyist and he had him off to a tee, having a few hits in his own right.

Peter He always was an Elvis impersonator (Copyist - sorry Pete S!) Peter! Social Tragedy by Daughters of Eve on Cadet is sooooooo much better than 'dont let it slip away'! (same tune, different words- and the original version, Ral Donner came later) - but it's still not great..... Edited December 5, 2012 by MrC

I stand humbled and corrected Smiffy - well in so far as he is no longer with us. However, there are lots of references to Ral being an Elvis tribute act so I shall stand by that bit. Notwithstanding the fact that I really don't know the difference between a "copyist" and a tribute act - methinks your splitting hairs! Edited December 5, 2012 by Peter99

Guest Matt Male Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Black Power - James Coit. The Burning fooking Bush. Both great records. Which proves the point that threads like this will always be one man's crap is another man's nostalgic oldie, so we'll never all agree on any. Except Interplay. Will anyone defend that?

Northernjordan Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Black Power - James Coit. The Burning fooking Bush. I would have had said The Burning Bush... The first time i heard it, i thought what the hell is this crap? How did this get plays? Yes it does sounds like The Monkeys on some acid filled trip, but it really is an infectious 100mph tune. I actually quite like it the more i listen to it... 1

If you haven't heard Interplay for over 30 years, and it comes on, unexpectedly, loud, in a decent room, it brings back those teenage years and that makes it sound great! Wasn't there a big thread on here about this very record some time back?
Len Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 (edited) Black Power - James Coit. The Burning fooking Bush. Sorry, Black Power used to be cool, then was cr*p……but has gone full circle, so is now cool again! (We need another thread!) It’s already being played again at some venues and it’s spreading! - Retro! All the best, Len P.s - I like it anyway Edited December 5, 2012 by LEN 1
MrsWoodsrules Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 There was tons at later Wigan in my day (I'll temper that with, there was tons of brilliant stuff too.) Lost Summer Love is a cringer IMO, but I can't tell you how big it was, absolutely massive. Russ Winstanley was guilty of selling his soul & should bare the brunt for all this crap stuff, no other djs were doing this at the time, to my memory & once he was off the decks things usually improved. Although, you had no chance at an early session on a Friday, cos he was on all night, that was torture, but at least the bar was open!!. He was always plugging any old crap with a view to getting it pressed up by his supplier Simon S & they could make some wonga. Aid. 1

Used to adore Burning Bush and Black Power back when - 35 years have not been kind to them though IMHO... Back in 78 I bought the track below (on the very same Blue Bell) 'cos I thought it was the best Norvern track ever - cost me nearly a weeks wage at the time but I didn't care 'cos I HAD to have it.... It sounds fooking awful now!!. Edited December 5, 2012 by Zed1 1

I can just imagine an excited 70's teenager, ‘throwing’ himself around to this…..but yes, it’s cr*p I’m afraid All the best, Len
billmarr Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 G.T.O's - The girl From New York City, i got it after hearing it and gon mental on the dance floor at a Clouds niter for a tenner in the seventies (not bad money in those days) chuffed to hell.got it home and thought"what the feck" it's the beachboys in disguise. i've only found out on youtube that the Beachboys DID record it. total pish. P.S. anyone want to buy it or maybe a swop for Joe 90.

Andreas B Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Jimmy Delphs - Don't Sign The Paper Baby one of the first northern records I bought (even though now I wouldn't really consider it "northern" per se, you can dice that up however you'd like), but unfortunately my mate who I do my monthly nighter with loves the bleedin' tune, and demands I play it every time we spin together. It really does make me cringe for some reason these days though. I'm thinking of perhaps just giving it to him once and for all...
Andyj Posted December 6, 2012 Author Posted December 6, 2012 Black Power - James Coit. The Burning fooking Bush. Always liked Black Power, but you can't please everyone all the time! 1
Mal C Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) Yes... Joey Delorenzo spot on... absolutely dreadful record.. That said I like most stuff, and although its fun to mock all these I think 'Our Music' is utterly fabulous...I think its worth saying that here.. That said, there are some tracks that just turn me off, either they are generally deficient in vocal quality otherwise termed as pub singers, or just too plaintive for my taste, Tommy Bush - I don't like it is an example, nothing in that record moves me what so ever.. and I'd have to say that about most of the above... Why don't we do a thread about really good records, give me an excuse to knock trendy funky stuff, cue 'Funk Meister' Dave Abbott... and thrust the virtues of 'Beat ballads.. maybe another time ehh.. Popular Post Pete S Posted December 6, 2012 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2012 What was it? Can't see/hear youtube videos while at work - if it's Prince & Princess.... I still love it! Yeah Prince & Princess is great. Black Power is rubbish and always was rubbish from it's first play. As bad as Tim Tam. Interplay was ok. Lost Summer Love is a great 60's pop record. Burning Bush has a great intro but it's downhill from there. But we enjoyed all of them at the time, what's wrong with that? Records didn't have to pass some kind of credibility test in those days...it was a lot of fun and they were great times. 5

Guest MrC Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Danny Moore - Somebody New Cheers Pete Always loved that tune, and it's still near the front of my play box now!
Popular Post Mal C Posted December 6, 2012 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2012 No No no, this record should not be near this thread.. are you all mad? 4
Guest ritchie Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 August & Deneen - We Go Together and The Carmel Strings - I Hear A Symphony. I paid a relative fortune for them in the 70's I hate them so much
