the whites were the boots

From what I remember from the time it was never actually released at the time but a few of white sterling stamped demos turned up.

After demand was created it turned up as a legitamate release on the pink label without the sterling stamp.

The white demos without the sterling stamp are the definate boots/pressings.

All the best

The pink was not booted. The only real original is the white demo, the pink ones were pressed up due to demand from the UK. The white demo was booted but has Sterling Sound scratched in instead of stamped and the sound quality is poor. Not poor enough to drown out this apalling cacophony though whistling.gif

I'd like to take issue with the above. Appalling has two "P"'s.

Actually Pete I do have the white Sterling stamped dj but they made me do it and I don't play it. It's there solely as a warning as to the slippery slope that this 45 has led many people to. Before you know it you're wearing aftershave other than Brut and thinking Cunnie has a point.

i just looked in the 'book' and if you have a white Carstairs AND a stamped epitome...then...well worry - 2 is just not possible.

As I said, can of worms-the 'stamp' is on the edge of the label like a bump in the paper-if it is a stamp?

IT IS UNDER THE LABEL USUALLY NEAR THE 'SANBAG RECORDS' LOGO THERE IS A SCRATCHED SYMBOL IN THE DEADWAX WHICH LOOKS LIKE AN RP LINKED R ABOVE THE P. WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE THE PRESSING PLANT SIGNIFYER. THEY WERE NOT ALWAYS STAMPED LIKE THE MONARCH PLANT..WHERE MANY BOOTS WERE PRESSED ILLEGALLY...RAISED LETTERS UNDER LABEL LOOK LIKE 210 UNDER A MAGNIFIER..MAYBE 21P HAVEN'T A CLUE WHAT THIS DENOTES..JUST A PRESS NUMBER MAYBE..BUT DEFINITELY ORIGINAL. MY DEMO COPY IS ORIGINAL COVER UP ...BIT BATTERED BUT PLAYS GREAT Edited by bearsoul

Wasn't there 2 addresses or something similar about pink issues. I wouldn't normally mention this but Im exchanging emails with My mate Dave in USA right now and he's proving to be a bigger anorak than I ever imagined.

TWO PRINT RUNS PERHAPS?

.

Sorry. No guessing.

Dave reckons it's something to do with who is credited on label as distributor. Chess is GOOD cos that's what stamped DJ copies say. Red Lite is BAD cos that's the boot/repress due to Northern demand.

That does ring a bell but Dave is also the guy who reckoned at Wigan that hec could tell what colour the label was just from the sound of the record!! In short,a nutter.

Maybe somebody with less alcohol inside them could sort this out

Good call Rob whistling.gif

At least we now know where the dividing line is.

Must admit that i did play this once & i got an overwhelming urge to wear a patch laden vest, a beer towel, baggie trousers, a pair of Clark's poly's that resembled Cornish pasties & to carry an empty holdall round with me that was clad in even more patches.

Never been so scared in all my f****n life

Going off topic but do you know why they changed there name from the Carstairs to Universal Mind?

Because car's don,t have stairs....

pat & the blenders has the same "hallmark"/stamp under the label - there was a thread a while back with plenty of them listed - i was sorting my records last week and came across a 'stamped' one which i'd never noticed and for some reason suprised me...if i could only remember which it was! lol

First of all let me assure Gavin and Cunnie that my posts of last night were not malicious in any way and Im afraid I'd been at the Tesco cream soda which always makes me hyperactive owing to the high count of artificial additives. That's my excuse and Im sticking to it.

I could just have easily wrtitten that "Gavin Page has a point" but there's something about the name Cunnie that just lingers in my mind.

Stuart, that was below the belt. Do I come on this site and draw attention to things you prefer to keep hidden but now the gloves are off!! Mr Cosgrove is both Scottish and ginger but despite this he has been able to lead a normal life. Sympathy cards can be sent to Stuart c/o this website.

Actually I began to get somewhat disillusioned with the modern soul sound after a few trips to USA. Think I'd picked up Mother Fox, Record Player and 7th Wonder[T-Town]. This was in late 80's/early 90's and aren't they kinda 120mph and not very soulful.

Gavin, I think we can meet halfway. Mr.M's is better off as a car park. Was it Bob who came up here to Macclesfield. Sold cars I think. He often mentioned you and said that one day you'd be as good a DJ as him. Next time you see him please say hello for me. My memory is getting worse. Pretty sure it was Bob,chubby with glasses. Southerner, but then we all are as far as Stuart's concerned. Facking too right, mate.

No offence taken Rod, just a bit of fun.

Tell you what i'll do - If your'e that disillusioned with stuff like Mother Fox & Record Player i'll gladly take e'm off your hands for a modest fee to cover the p&p, it's the least i can do to relieve you of such dirge :) .

Off to Tesco's now to stock up on cream soda whistling.gif

Simple explanation to a myth. As I recall, it was first played as a White Demo (as were many new releases at the time). I got my own copy before it was issued and it came through as a fairly new pre-release along with 2-3 other brand new Red Coach White Demos.

Soon after it became big over here the pink issues came through in quantity, selling, up North, for around 70p each at the time. The record went on (after much political debate over its validity for the Northern scene) to become a monster and later an acknowledged classic. Long after the pink copies dried up (a few years) it got booted on a poorly pressed and poorly printed White Label Demo Copy. In the mid/late 70's few pirates wanted the extra overhead of trying to match the 2-3 colour printing process of the originals. Make no mistake, the pink ones were always 'proper' and genuine in so much as they were issued...as issues... soon after DJ promotion (on White labels), in exactly the same way as thousands of other 45's!

So, no mystery. Just the normal course of record promotion in the early 70's.
