Guest ShaneH Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I hear many people on my travels tell me things like "those London soulies never venture north" and "most people in Lancs never attend events outside the county" is this true? therefore, who are the best travellers? Shane

Shane Shane, As someone who travels far and wide in my pursuit of all things Soulful i would have to say the people from the Northeast take some beating when it comes to travelling to venues. I think that us lot in the Northwest are spoilt for choice thats why not so many travel. Only the lunatics like myself travel 150 miles passing venues on the doorstep Steve

Shane obviously the celtic crew, the cornish, the scots and the irish.
Guest ShaneH Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 gotta agree by the north east soul crowd. they really do put the effort in you gotta admire the carrot crunchers tho......billywhizz/karenC/Becky/Nickg/Dave Wooley etc they get everywhere Shane
Ged Parker Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Depends what you mean by dedicated. I'm out every Friday and Saturday night at a venue. I have 6 cds always on in the car. I play records at home when at home, on my laptop when away from home, I come on here when I can, I search numerous websites, auction houses via the web, contact non soul dealers in the US, find second hand record shops in every town I visit with work. I live in Blackpool but am rarely at home. I guess the question though Shane appears to be which part of the country has soul fans who travel furthest to get to venues?

Guest sydney bridge Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 sorry forgot about mainland europeans and some in australia and n.z. probably come home for certain events but i once met someone at a nighter who told me he was a martian.

Shane
SteveM Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 correct Ged So how often the farthest travellers travel is irrelevant then ?
Guest Stuart T Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I used to regularly travel from another hemisphere to attend events. Thankfully, since I have moved half a mile to West Greenwich the journey times have been significantly reduced.
Ged Parker Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 So how often the farthest travellers travel is irrelevant then ? Janine I guess. Mind you I have attended venues in Preston 14 miles from home but have been working in Canterbury that day so that's a fair journey too. Promoters get around a lot sometimes 3 or 4 venues in a night and what about Paul from On the Scene?
Guest ShaneH Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 So how often the farthest travellers travel is irrelevant then ? afternoon steve, i wasnt after the farthest. i was looking for the most dedicated travellers - in other words those who travel a long way on a regular basis. Shane

Guest Stuart T Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Why didn't you just say that then, instead of making it a kind of treasure hunt Japanese flag day is it Steve? Have some chocolate and a nice cry.
Guest Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 you gotta admire the carrot crunchers tho......billywhizz/karenC/Becky/Nickg/Dave Wooley etc they get everywhere Shane Thats because we have to Shane, nearest venue to me on a regular basis is an hour away and they play the same stuff month after month after month To me part of the fun is travelling anyway and I know we can walk into a venue anywhere in the country and know people

I'm not being serious Stuart, its just that nobodys baited him for a while and he'll start to think he's popular. And we can't have that, can we. And you'll pay for that when all the harridans read it.

I think that was all Shane's fault too wasn't it?.

Toodarnsoulful Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 (edited) Didn't read all the posts but i thinks its about travellin soulies etc. for me the travellin part is the best..new venues, new people, new sounds how can you lose!! not everyone has the freedom i have no children etc.. well im off to Belfast next week then Rugby then Dublin then then Belfast again then Scotland probably Dundee then Cleethorpes and try and fit Barcelona and a London trip in there somewhere!! Yours in Soul L Edited March 24, 2006 by toodarnsoulful

Guest Netspeaky Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 obviously the celtic crew, the cornish, the scots and the irish. Not knocking the Irish, but I bet they can fly to Liverpool/Manchester/Birmingham/London and be in a club just as quick or quicker than someone from other parts of country. It's not as if they swim over is it.

Yours in Soul L That sounds like the route Chris and the new century boys took when they brought a mini bus down to the 100 club from the North West. He phoned me up when stuck in traffic on the M1 at Northampton. And arranges to meet us in a bar just off Oxford Street. Next I get a call and they are driving around Shepards Bush looking for a way to get to the West End. Janine can be the furthest travelled just going from Kent to the 100 club.
Guest rachel Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 only 1 ? i meet spaced out people every week with regular trips from edinburgh, rachel must be the best travelled soulie this year - surely? Shane Must be one of them.. I do like the whole process of travelling but like Karen said it's also a case of having to so you can get to hear the music you enjoy and spend time with the people you want to. Not sure if it's dedication as such... just doing what I want to do, and must admit I'd rather be able to do that and be home tucked up in bed on a Sunday morning!
uni ted Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 as i have an impending divorce, watch out for this north east nutter out and about even more than usual ,but to be fair,it does not really matter how far you travel, its the dedication to the music that counts in the end.

Billy Freemantle Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 but to be fair,it does not really matter how far you travel, its the dedication to the music that counts in the end. I'm not so sure about this. As as has been pointed out on this site by others - and most effectively and ultimately provocatively I think by Brett very recently when he launched somewhat of a tirade against arm-chair soulies who did not support events - if events are not attended then this scene is sooner or later going to splutter to an end. I say this not as someone with an axe to grind: for personal reasons and lack of opportunity I do not attend any events at all. I certainly spend a lot of time listening to Soul music and have done for more than 40 years now but but I genuinely doubt whether this counts as dedication. Soul is one of my gerat pleasures and my enjoyment of it is due to the efforts ond real dedication of others. One mark of this dedication is to get out and attend events, some of which by virtue of the records unearthed and played there, will eventually prove to be the cutting edge of the scene.

I don't think anyone should ridicule anyone for not attending venues. Not everyone is able to do as they please. I am very lucky in that I have the freedom to go almost anywhere I like but work/family/lifestyle can limit people
Billy Freemantle Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I don't think anyone should ridicule anyone for not attending venues. Not everyone is able to do as they please. Yes, you are right. No-one should ridicule anyone for not attending venues. I hope you are not suggesting that I am doing that. If you read the whole of my post, I'm obviously not. But this doesn't mean that we should not give credit where credit is due, does it?

No I am not for one minute suggesting that you did and fail to see how anyone reading your post could imagine that you were. I was actually agreeing with you and saying that nobody should have a go at anyone for how many venues they attend/not attend. Why though should someone get credit just because they can attend?

I am very lucky in that I have the freedom to go almost anywhere I like but work/family/lifestyle can limit people =========== Most travelled soulies I know, probably Janine/Dave A, Rach, Karen, Gill/Becky Billy W, Baz, Dave W, they're the ones that seem to get everywhere and who aren't too worried about the distance they travel. Winnie:-)

But this doesn't mean that we should not give credit where credit is due, does it? credit for what? getting on a train /sitting in a car ..not hard really is it . for me personally distance has never been important or how far i will travel to a venue ...it wasn't relevant when i done it on a scooter and it's not relevant now and thats after 50,000 miles in 2 years in my car Davie ps. when are you hallions coming to the BELFAST SOUL CLUB!! eh eh?? call yourselves soulies!! heehee See you all soon L next saturday

Billy Freemantle Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Why though should someone get credit just because they can attend? Well they should get credit because they are supporting the existence, continuance and development of soul music in a very real way. It's not the only way that rare soul survives and thrives but it's very important. I don't do it, but I benefit from the vibrancy of the scene thanks to those who do. That's all I'm saying.
Guest Baz Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 did 1100 miles in 2 weekends We must have done that on the way back from the last 100 club
