Guest Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 Little Antony and the Imperials? No? Over to you Kolla!!
Guest in town Mikey Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 Knowing how the Djs used to like to have a laugh with cover - up names this might be a cover up?? So the title could just be a clue as to who it really is. They used to do things like 'The C and W singers featuring Anne Beverley', (no prizes for guessing that one). There is a tune running around my head that has some of those lyrics in, but dont wait for the artist to pop into my head. But it is a kind of mid tempo female vocal, not really the stuff that Gary used to love and push.
Guest Ferrett Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 I know it! I know it! I've got the tune in my head now and I'm gonna be singing it the rest of the day. It's actually a mid to up tempo male group sound with a cracking horn break in it. I've got it on an old Dave Evison (Signal Radio) tape from about 1988 at home when he used to have guest DJ's in (may well have been Gary Rushbrooke?). Great tune!! I'll dig the tape out and see who it is when I get home from work tonight. However, I've got a feeling it was covered up at the time, possibly under the name of Red-Top Young???? I'm off to hum the tune all afternoon now - cheers Hippo!!!!

Guest Ferrett Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 Found it!! Somehow went straight to the tape despite there being about 500 in the same cupboard!!! I was wrong on both counts (shock!!) it wasn't Red Top Young and it wasn't Gary Rushbrook guesting on Dave Evison's show. Hippo was in the right area. It was Little Ron and the Esquires - I've found someone. It was played by Butch as part of HIS guest spot on Dave Evison's show. On the tape he says it was originally played by Gary Rushbrooke at the Casino in 1978 covered up as the Simms Twins. WHAT A TUNE - Somebody buy this and get it spun at nighters again please!!!

I've got a real good recording of it on a CD somewhere that I'll dig out and put up at the weekend, if anyone is interested
