Yes but not by Sam, Searling played Eloise Laws, Sam was still playing junk like She Devil at that point and had been removed from the Casino to be replaced by Gary Rushbrooke, sorry to burst bubbles, but think there is a bit of selective memory going on here! Cheers Jock Hi Jock, Sam was playing Eloise Laws at the time - Think he may have played this at Wigan in 1980 as a new release before he left Wigan.Would have to check my tape listings. How anoraky is that! Sam definately played CL Blast at Wigan and the Misty Graham (both on the tape I sent you Mark?). If you thought She Devil was bad what the hell did you make of Leon Peterson "Don't squeeze the sherm" ?!! Don't be too hard on Sam -Jock - it was shortly after this when he hit us with many top quality new release album cuts/7's etc.

Ehh??? Sam was filling floors in 1980/81 like no-one else??? Where about and with what, I was just a young whippersnapper at time so would be interested to know what I was missing. And I would suggest you define newies in the context you are talking about as surely no-one of sane mind could say anyone was beating Richard Searling at that time. I wait with baited breath! Jock

Mark F, thankfully never wore a vest, however now would look like Rab C Nisbet, and even for a Scot thats not a good thing. Interesting point re playing new music at Wigan 80/81, I think it was dead easy because the crowd was so small, some Saturdays there were about 100 in and 97 of these were in Mr M's so Searling, Brady, Rushbrooke and even Winstanley to a lesser extent could play what they wanted, I remember dancing to John and The Wierdest (Spyder Turner at the time) with only 2 people on the huge dance floor, the other person being one of the most soulful guys in the world Dave Molloy. Even Keith Minshull playing mostly oldies was able to play what he wanted and some of his tunes then were amazing/ So perversely it allowed the greatest music I have been priviledged to dance to be played, but again that was then, dont want it back, would like something different but with the same impact, think that is just me being wishful. Whatever happened to that beautiful photographer you brought up to Fife when you were working for NME and did an article for Echoes? Think I followed her round that whole night. . Hmm thankfully that record seems to have disapeared a bit like one of your other journalistic uncoverings from then Washington Go-Go (or whatever trendy term it had) some of which I did like (although not the 75 minute rambling tracks that some favoured) . Hmm I think the only feasible connection between Hibs and Brazil (apart from our now bus driving ex player Ally) is the haircuts our young bucks favour, I do hope that we make your radio partner thoroughly miserable, if I see him I will tell you said to buy me a pie. Jock Agree Richard was in a different league,but away from Wigan(The Fleet was my local) Sam was playing some corkers (Flame & King,Roy Dawson etc).......On top of which he sold me a Charles Johnson for a quid in the Wigan record bar,so I have to be nice.

Giles not been on form last couple of times I have seen him Yes Gavin, Superb concert - full on Jazz, really nice intimate venue. I really felt like I was watching a slice of history. Bobby Wellins playing sax with Stan Tracey Quartet....he's a 70 year old Glaswegian who obviously has seen it all, and has been recording since 1956. Fantastic and so moving. Also Harry Beckett - again must be 60+. And legend Stan Tracey too... I did'nt stay for Gilles - He was playing on the concourse as I came out (something quite tribally) and I did'nt want it to break the spell I was under...I just wanted to melt away into the night...

Don't think it got much of a push because he died of a coronarly a few months later, aged 38/9. Nige bought Sam's,don't what happened to it when he sold. Bought mine form Black Grape.

Hmmmm,Yes, the days of the Wigan Pyramids with Mr Searling being coaxed off of the stage at the last minute to climb on top.Not really a good time for the Casino except for (as you rightly say) the music ,(& a bit of fun). However,Yate,The Fleet,St Ives(Dayers),Nite Spot(Bedford),together with others I can't remember were really kicking with Sam( & Ian Clarke at Yate) being the main draw.
