Can I just say - at the end of the day, I put these tracks up just because as far as I know, they are unavailable to the majority of people and I don't like that! So it's nice to be able to share things. BUT I must stress that I don't put them up saying they are the greatest tracks ever made, they are just sound clips of interesting tracks. So I don't have to justify them to anybody, therefore when people quote my 'only good modern soul' tag as an argument about this particular track, it gets my back up a bit to be honest. At least two people said thanks

anyway there's another one on the way in a minute

 That's why most of us go to Northern Soul Event's :)

Jon Buck

Northern was my first love

and it will be my last LOL

To be truthfull you can't beat a good northern tune but it's very hard these days to find a straight up northern event

I am not knocking Soul/rare/ progressive whatever the tags but I, and lots of others my age/older Northern was what we started with

Hope that makes some sence

As close as you can get to a 'soul instrumental' (imo).

Thats bizarre Simsy, cos I think thats about as far removed from a soul instrumental as you can get - probably due to the fuzz guitars on the intro. I like the chime bars and that but the intro ruins it. Oh and it's a great dancer.

What would these artist sound like without the instumental bakcin, sort of acapelo if you know what i mean, artists usely are better with a better band, they complement each other, and some instramentals the vocals would deffo` be over the top, imagine "Harlem rumble" as a vocal,it would definitly be too much, and lose something....hope this makes some sort of sense?

Heard someone else say that Colin, I said what about Earl Wright Thumb a Ride....They said yea that's allright but that's all....then I said what about The Brothers Are You Ready for This....they said yea that ones OK to.....Also Steve Karmen Breakaway the Istrumental is better than the vocal & we could go on all night with this....

Jon Buck

The Brothers...................Soul? Disco

Maybe we need a new thread, and someone can define soul for those of us who like northern??:)

At the end of the day its what you find soulful on a personal level, some might argue the fact (Chalky for one) that that the Oxford Knights is not, but i think it is. I like plenty of stuff that isn't soulful to an extent but IMO it is if you see what i mean

It always makes me laugh this old chestnut.

I personally love the Detroit "sound" as created by the likes of The Funks/Pocorn and Hestor/Bridges Knight Eaton/Solid Hitbound/etc etc. I always think that if the guys who don't rate the instrumentals/backing tracks aren't hearing what I'm hearing then they're actually missing out in some way.

If The Funks didn't create soulful music then what on earth would you call it? Would John Lee Hooker sound the same with someone else playing his guitar?

The people who made this music regard the music as soul just as much as the vocal. That'll do for me.

Nice talkin to ya....

Dave

Is the voice not an instrument then? Produces all sorts of notes, massive range and can add emotion so easily  Again I think it's a matter of choice, personally I prefer vocals, but if instrumentals are your thing, brill

This thread has made the following clear (once again)

We have no common understanding of what Soul music is

We have no common understanding of what Northern Soul is

We can't agree whether or not a record needs a vocal for it to be either of the above

How can this possibly be?

Well instead of trying to understand it I'll just listen to this.

I too like plenty of stuff that isn't soulful but I don't believe anyone can call the Oxford Nights soulful, it doesn't sound remotely soulful IMO. White beach music
