....and there is more to come, the two biggest populations in the world the Indians and the Chinese have yet to catch the soul collecting bug...

Great.

Not Eddie Parker though, which was what Chalky was refering to. Unless over a year ago is 'recently'?

Sorry James, thought you were on about the Magnetics. There's been one Eddie Parker in the last few months. Or I've seen it some where else maybe.

I see why you thought that, I think I misread Chalky's post, he was talking about the magnetics I think.

Can remember Bob with the Magnetics, and an episode when Colin Curtis came from Stoke especially to buy one. There's an old saying regarding Purchases :

Some people know the Price of everything but the value of Nothing !!!!!.

Regards Ritchie

Ritchie WELL SAID! the one consistant thing in all the value/quantity debate are the people who DON'T own a certain "in-demand" piece always say "It's not rare" "Price is too much" "There are loads of them" all there saying really is "I don't own a copy"..as for loads..believe me all these 4 figure babies are RARE.. The Magnetics being a most holy of pieces, as I'm sure anyone who genuinely owns a copy will confirm.

I was just sat here with Wrighty and we were saying the exact same thing. It's always the people who don't have the records who always say "my mate used to have a 50 box of those during the war but swapped them for a ration book."

I've been £2500 bid on every Eddie Parker that has come up for sale in the past 5 years. I've never come close to winning it and am still sat here bid.

I don't own it and I don't like it.

You're right though John, of course, I think there are some great stock reactions, they all come out so predictably - used to own in, turned it down for ha'penny, prefer the version by such and such, b side is better but couldn't be bothered with it, etc. People who don't consider a record rare because there are perhaps 200 copies of a record in collections should think about the maths of that fact and the rules of supply and demand.

Out of interest though, how many buyers would you say that there are worldwide who'd pay over, say £250 on a regular basis for records?

not sure i totally agree with this john. it's certainly a motivating factor for some people some of the time but sometimes it's just that they genuinely feel a record isn't as rare as it's thought to be, or is being sold at 'too high' a price, surely

'too high' is hard to define, of course. IMO any record is only worth what the next person is prepared to pay (not what the last person paid); on that basis i think the magnetics heart of stone is too pricey at $8,000. i could be wrong, of course, but i just don't think that price would be reached again if one was ebayed tomorrow.

that's not cos i desperately want one - i'd quite like one, but there's about 1,000 other records i want ahead of it  . all of which are overpriced, by the way :P .

You all have to remember that for a record to go to what people call silly money is that there is more than one person bidding on it, that means that there is at least one other person who is willing to pay the previous price. Which also means if it's listed again he could get it dead cheap because no one else wants it, but we all know different don't we. :wicked:

I think another perspective is that some of these prices actually are hurting the scene. I think, in part, that they are a turn off to the younger soul fans/DJ's. It's a very daunting task to these days to start a decent collection! We're "competing" for records with collectors that are well established already(along in their careers, homes paid, kids grown, etc.)! Lots of "returnees" with expendable cash flows has to have an effect on prices. Good for them, as they are able to get back things they sold off or always wanted. Bad for us, as it put many records out of reach. IMO, of course. Just want to see what others think about this..... :wicked:

Also, don't give me the obligatory "Plenty of good cheapies to be had!". Kinda funny as it's always from someone who's already got all their bigger stuff "back at Wigan for ten pounds each"!!:ohmy:
