Chris L
I guess there's only about 10 people anywhere paying this kind of money for records. Sure John Anderson had a box of at least 50 and he was saying he sold them for about a quid a piece. I think the Poets would still fetch £1500 or thereabouts, maybe more, rarer than Eddie Parker IMO. Still only the 3 of Margaret Little, agree with the Prophets well worth it. I would never imagined the Magnetics going for what it did, I know it doesn't come up for sale very often but..... Simsy
Popsike not as up to date as you'd think either. Couple of Mark Loyd's that have sold in the recent past that don't show up on there at all. People are still paying over the odds on Ebay. Comparing Gino - Paper Moon last night between what M- copies had sold for and the VG++ that went through last night. Mighty Lover went through for big bucks earlier. You cant whack being at a soul do imo, have the vinyl in yer hands, listen to it sometimes if they have a turntable. And of course some low grade haggling. Link to comment Social source share

Put a deposit down (no dollars left, credit cards virtually max'ed out), having taken the W/D's of Jock Mitchell, Duke Browner, Dena Barnes and a rather nice copy of a little record by The Moments on Hog (sold to Mr Willingham in '96). Guest ScooterNik
I read on an internet group but two days ago that records on the northern scene are sold for much higher amounts than those on the scooter scene, for the same record. I find that hard to believe. There are people on the scooter scene i know who collect, but there isn't really a collecting scene on there away from the mainstream. They tend to generally source their vinyl fixation the same way as everyone else - lists, fairs, nighters, ebay etc? What does tend to happen is people like Sean Chapman will advertise to buy records/collections in Scootering and the seller often has no idea what he's selling so will get offered low prices as the scooter scenes main focus is obviously scooters not music. If you had a 40 year old Lambretta in poor condition in your garage doing nothing you'd be more likely to sell that for much less than its market value as you wouldn't know the going rate? Same as.... I nearly sold my collection up a few years back (northern, ska, reggae, punk, psychobilly...you name it) to one of these dealers and ended up telling him he was taking the piss with his 'best offer and tbh i'm doing you a favour mate' attitude and derisory offer. I lived without the scooter I was looking to buy at the time and still have the records Link to comment Social source share
Guest
On the subject of Danny Moore, and it being a previous four figure record until multiple copies turned up, and the price then reflected this. (Similar to the Royal Esquires and Frederick Hymes 45's.) What are the chances of the Magnetics, Eddie Parker turning up in this manner ?. Suppose no chance. But did people feel the same with the previous tracks i mentioned, or was this just down to the time and place.ie....Was it just a part in the history of the soul collecting calendar, suppose we will always know more as the years pass. soulfulsaint
I read on an internet group but two days ago that records on the northern scene are sold for much higher amounts than those on the scooter scene, for the same record. If anything, the presence of 'other scenes' has had an inflationary effect on the rare soul scene. Take a record like Mixed Emotions 'Gold of My LIfe' formally a cheapie at the Mecca. But thirty years have increased its scarcity, the modern northern scene has increased its value, the 'B' side is very collectable funk track, which has pushed its value further. So in effect, more people have a reason to collect it - but supply has not increased. So if demand increases and supply stays the same, then just like oil, the prices rise. That's basic economics. The emergence of the gay disco scene has made Philly and NY Disco more collectable, the rare groove scene has made JB and Street Funk more collectable, the rare funk scene has made Ohio labels the 'new Detroit' , the R&B scene has its effect on prices too. The Japaneses collectors market has made small southern based labels much more expensive than they were in the days of Wigan, where they never really 'competed' with Detroit and Chicago releases. We often assume the inflation in the market is about the rare northern scene and 'people paying daft prices' but there are probably more people in Japan bidding for records like Don Varner 'Tearstained Face' now than there are northern collectors. There are definitely more US buyers for indie funk. Even the evolution of our own scene has played its part in the demand curve. A great current example is Ollie Jackson. Old school collectors around in the '70s would not part with ' The Day My Heart Stood Still' despite the more recent demand for the flip side 'Gotta Wipe Away the Teardrops' . So if copies are scarce, and there is a new demand surge then the price goes up. ....and there is more to come, the two biggest populations in the world the Indians and the Chinese have yet to catch the soul collecting bug... Great. Link to comment Social source share

Shane I have just got back there and pray to high heaven that China doesnt get the Northern Soul collecting bug. You see shops on every high street selling bootleg Handbags, Designer Clothes, DVDs, Watches. You go to markets and they can knock you up an exact replica in hours. OF ANYTHING. I got fed up and asked if they had any John Ateyo (Bristol City legend) designer polo shirts. I was told to wait, the guy could get me anything . All of a sudden there would be 5000 Margaret Little's for sale etc etc. It would make the 'mint originals' coming out from one dealer in the states look like a trickle.
