Nick Soule Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Is this a Detroit or Charlotte, NC record? I can't find anything about the label. I'm aware the group is from Charlotte, NC and recorded/moved to Detroit at some point during their musical career. The past few times I've seen it on eBay it's been listed by someone based in Detroit. Also, Mike Terry on saxophone, right? Thanks, Nick 1
boba Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Are you just asking whether the aware label was owned by a detroit owner? Or whether it was pressed in Detroit?
boba Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 By the way, carolinasoul.org has aware listed as a charlotte label. if it were just a charlotte group on a detroit label he would have listed it under "north carolina artists on non-NC labels". I think that answers your question?
Robbk Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I thought that Aware Records operated out of BOTH Detroit AND North Carolina (probably more the latter, than the former (possibly at different times? (i.e. Detroit first?).
George G Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 This looks like a custom job from Arthur Smith studios in Charlotte. I don't have any proof but I'll bet my 33 years of experience on it. All the AS custom jobs have a similar layout and pressed through Kaybank.
Modernsoulsucks Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I thought this was a Carolina label. Must have read it somewhere. Always strikes me that if it is then it sounds Detroit. Yet "Its better to cry" on Sport sounds like a Carolina thing. IMO of course. ROD 1
Steve Foran Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Rod I had a tape from WC.Richard introduced it something like.... "Gary Rushbrooke says this is a Detriot record, it is in fact from N Carolina.Still a great record though" Maybe he knew something back then?
Windlesoul Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) This is a Detroit recording on a Charlotte NC label. Edited November 30, 2012 by Windlesoul
Dave Moore Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 This is a Detroit recording on a Charlotte NC label. Mark, You missed a plug for yer book there...Get It There!! Regards, Dave
Windlesoul Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Almost a plug then thought better of myself Dave! Hence the self edit of my post! Truth is, it's a complex / vague story for each of their four recordings, indeed anything about the Appreciations, and I don't have the full story myself, but a fair bit more than was known previously (took best part of a year to get hold of one of the band members). Suffice to say their story involves NC, SC, Detroit, Nashville and the sax player? And may well not have been Mike Terry contrary to popular belief, including mine, but somebody else who will be surprise to some.......
