I've recently been giving some thought to the economics of running a small, legal record company, something along the lines of Joe Boy, Grapevine 2000 & Hayley etc

Assuming that you can purchase the rights to a track at reasonable cost, find a pressing plant interested, how difficult is to get a distribution deal?

What length of run would you be looking at to reach a break even point & is there an average run?

I'm assuming that the economics in the long term don't stack up.

Thanks for looking.

Col.

Col I have a couple of mates who run their own record labels.

Would you like me to forward this to them? One lives in Maidenhead, not a million miles from you. He is a great bloke and I'm sure he'd be only to willing to answer any questions.

Considering you had the necessary income to fund such a move, and then hopefully register a "positive" economically, couldn't you come to some sort of financial agreement with a company like "Vinyl Carvers" ?

Its where some so called DJ's get there 'expencive' records from thumbsup.gif

They will cut you a track on Vinyl for about £15, Dont think they do mass production though

To be honest i've only used them the once, i had asked the "Boss" at Kent if with his permission, he would allow me to have a copy of an unreleased 45' cut (only existed on master tapes). Then kindly the "Man" gave me the nod, saying it was good exposure for the CD. Strangely enough, i actually heard Andy Whitmore, playing alongside Butch at the New Century, Manchester a few years back, play the self same "45' " only a few weeks after i had mine cut. Andy duly told me, upon asking that he had one done aswell....Small World.

ps..One side only, cost me a tenner.......

Must state though, and anyone who knows me would vouch this ( hopefully thumbsup.gif ), that without the "Bosses" permission i would have not gone through with it......i have my own strict philosophy and ethics..you know

Too Right....Reminds of a story Sonny Barger (Maxim leader of the Californian "Hells Angels") told, regarding a fellow member, who broke the oath and had "grassed" some fellow Angels up. Filled with remorse he was alone in the prison library, where he took two sharpened pencils, he held them with a tight grip in each hand, ...then proceeded to drive his head forward until both pencils went through both eyes......... :wicked:

If it was released on a CD it could have been played off that thumbsup.gif

why? If something has its first release from master tape on CD, then there is nothing wrong with playing it in the CD format. nothing at all.

Ok Dave, was just being light hearted............Hence the smiley....Starting to think perhaps i've given all the input i can to this forum nowadays.....
