Soulsmith Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Brilliant record, always in my box, never play it, not sure why? col.
Epic Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Remember Ian Levine playing it in the Highland Room around '74 I think. Always found it a rather weak record - quite surprised it went huge at Wigan - not really got that "All Nighter" feel to it.

Pete S Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 First to play it at Wigan was definitely Russ, followed by everyone else. Bloody awful record.

Bazm Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 well known classic,,but when did it first appear who spun it first,,who made it big? does anyone still like it? just wondering.... I first heard this at the Casino, probably was played at the Mecca (last hour) like so many sound that where ignored then became massive This was definitely made big by Russ Winstanley, and of i'm not mistaken went on to be included as the 'fourth' record before eight in the latter days of Wigan Still love it and an issue, purchased for the sum of £12.00 still resides in the ole collection Regards BazM

Mandy Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 One of my favourite tunes ... always jump on the floor at those opening bars I always remember Brian Rae playing it years and years and years ago but I don't know if he was first to play it .... as I'm far too young
Guest Paul Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Pete Smith loves it really but he won't admit it in public in case we all think he's gay or something. Paul Mooney
Guest Paul Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 A great song written by Larry Weiss who also wrote "Getting Ready For The Heartbreak", "Sweet Happiness", "Can't Stop Lovin' The Boy", "A Man Of Value", "I Want To Give You My Everything", "Mr Dream Merchant", "Stranger In Your Arms" and ...wait for it... "Bend Me, Shape Me", "Hi Ho Silver Lining" and ...it gets worse... "Rhinestone Cowboy". I think he got worse as he got older. Paul Mooney

Baz I'd have to disagree with you there, Alan Rhodes first played Stolen Hours and stuck with it, it wasn't very popular first time round. Pete Smith loves it really but he won't admit it in public in case we all think he's gay or something. Paul Mooney No I don't, it's shit. But I do like Rhinestone Cowboy, in fact I like a few Glen Campbell records...Witchita Lineman, one of the greatest records ever...Where's The Playground Susie...brilliant very rarely made a good one too Oh dear

Guest Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Slade very rarely made a bad record mate. Never made a good one imo wouldn,t do for us to like the same HB
Bazm Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Baz I'd have to disagree with you there, Alan Rhodes first played Stolen Hours and stuck with it, it wasn't very popular first time round. Hmmm....really wouldn't like to take anything away from Alan Rhodes, definitely one of my favourite DJ's at Wigan. Could NEVER understand why all my mates would disappear into 'M's and miss some fantastic sounds played by Messers Rhodes, Rushbrooke, and Brady to name a few. Your probably right about Patrice Holloway but is was Russ who made it really big towards the latter days, as I remember.
Bazm Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 ==== yes russ is my favourite wigan dj,,, he also played checkmates - kissing her and crying for you in 79,,i always thought that was 100 club 45... some others ill always be grateful to RW for putting me onto through his spots at wigan gloria & tiaras - im satisfied lockettes - i love the boy 'Uncle Golden Tones' always enjoyed his spots, set the tone for the night for me, (although Richard was God ;-)) Checkmates great record been playing it at Bury recently 'Gloria' now getting the attention it deserves.....great double sider The Lockettes......one of those forgotton oldies methinks

Pete Morgan Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 First to play it at Wigan was definitely Russ, followed by everyone else. Bloody awful record. Sorry made a cock up, have to agree with Pete smiths comments above, I love the tune only for the memories of Wigan.etc i woulld still put it in the same league as eg. Wilbur walton jnr etc and consider it cross over country/pop/soul sound...it has had it,s day and is a classic but there is more soulful stuff out there worthy of an airing imho.. pete mj

Wiganer1 Posted March 9, 2006 Author Posted March 9, 2006 But not enough of them, if you'd heard him every week over a matter of years maybe you would have a different opinion. Searling, Brady and Rushbrooke were the real deal in the last few years. youre probably right daz and i cant argue as i didnt go early enough to have a full on reply but for me Russ seems to have played anything that would pack a floor. but from the books/playlists ive read and tapes ive got of all of the above guys they all played their part pat brady played some fantastic stuff at that time,,I always got the feeling gary was ahead of his time during this period and richards plays in this period still stand up today.. i once asked russ what he did to compete with Richard when he had all his exclusives from 79- 81 and his reply was that he had his own big sounds and was filling the floor with them..as richard was with his.. as far as i can see wigan had something for everyone ,its a shame i didnt get there a bit earlier but if i did im sure i wouldnt have been as passionate as i am about the sounds from wigan.today i could talk about this all day long but gotta go for now til later .
