Russ Vickers Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 (edited) Scenario: The Northern Soul movie has been out 6 - 8 months. It has been an astonishing success. It was done perfectly, the current scene embrace it as the best thing done on the scene ever. Hundreds maybe thousands of young people discover Northern Soul & are mad for it. The vast majority have 'got it' & embrace the scene. A big oldies Allnighter has been catering for the new demand for all things Northern Soul with regards to the music, but they are already getting bored & need a venue that will cater to thier musical preferences which is the traditional Northern Soul format, New Discoveries, Rareities, Credible Oldies & a smattering of Crossover, Modern & New Releases if they are appropriate. You have found the ideal venue. It is in a location that is accesible from all points of the country, It holds a thousand plus people, the venue, local authorities etc are all on side & you have enough cash to promote the venue properly & everything is in place ready to go for potentially the next 'legendary Venue'. Butch is the countries number one DJ & has agreed to be a resident. He will do a two hour set. Because you are the promoter & you have a half decent record collection & you can put a not bad set together you will do an hour also. The Nighter runs for eight hours & you need five other DJ's. Keeping in mind the musical direction of the venue who would be your Dream Team of DJ's who will launch this venue into history & keep potentially thousands of new soulies, plus all of us old farts happy & coming back. There is great potential here to go off at tangents & get bogged down with all sorts of stuff, but lets try to keep to the plot & not go dpwn the oldies versus newies, Northern or Modern route etc, etc. I am interested in current DJ's from 2006, not 'well back in the day so n so would have been great here', or the 'my mate Bob has a great collection just needs a chance'. Might be an idea to add a comment on why you have chosen each of your five DJ's, for example 'Mick Smith is the bollocks, he will do the last hour of the Nighter cos he'll send em away dancing & wanting more'. There you go then, the future of the Northern Soul Scene is in your hands name the DJ's who are going to save the Northern Soul World !!!!!!!!. Russ Edited March 5, 2006 by Russ Vickers
Guest Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 (edited) Andy "Tats" Taylor..because at Martin Dixons night in Rotherham, he played the best set i've heard in years...all x/over. Soul Sam.....beacuse when on form he plays things i wished i knew, let alone owned Me.....because i only buy records i like....... Gareth Sweeney...Brilliant taste in 70's soul, totally underated...at the forefront of the progressive dj's Rich Buckley....see above, but go for the 60's approach, he is a freind, but who cares the man has an incredible collection and constantly updates his sounds..... Rodney Jones Rufus Thomas Curtis Anderson Jimmy Bishop All DJs who have released northern soul singles. Good mix of oldies, modern and R&B too.

Guest Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 Mine would have to be... Ian Clark - my all time no 2 DJ, and a lovely man to boot Mick Smith - plays a bit of everything - and I used to tell everyone he was my Dad Rob Marriott - with all the records he had in his heyday Gaz Simon - has more records off my wants list then I knew I wanted Gaz Kellett - if the w****r who stole his records gives them back Tony Smith - just so he plays Tina Roberts for me! So my allnighter would be great! A load of rare stuff, some storming big hitters, a fair bit of crossover and oddball stuff.... I can't wait - when can we have it! Oh and if anyone played a R&B record they would internally combust....unless it was one of the very few that I quite like!

Guest hammy Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 What's the film called - Apocolype Now ???? I love the smell of vinyl in the morning........
sister dawn Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 God this is hard to do... but gonna list me favourites first we have to have Soul Sam who made it real all those years ago on the east coast, pure brilliance. Mr golden voice Rob Smith for my mispent youth days at the palais Richard Searling no explaination needed. Mary Chapman who did it for the love of the scene back in the day, and had one of the best collections at the time, that a 16 year old had ever seen. Mark Bicknell, who like myself is "passionate about the scene and the music and whom plays The broadways for me and who each week costs me a fortune playing stuff on the radio that I dont own. I would definately have to have guest dj's each month from all the soul nites around the country, whom each month contribute to the most awesome scene ever and give the "top guns" a run for their money, playing brilliant sets wether it be rare oldies, the top 500, RnB or the modern in whatever genre, these are the people that keep the scene going. Top favs on my local scene for me at the moment include Ian Gee Doug Hall Dave Wooley Gez Langley and up and coming 16 year old Laura Dixon who reminds me of me, (back in the day) and whom under the guidance of her dad (minimally) is banging out top notch sets around the Lincs/ Notts area.
pikeys dog Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I've heard Mr Dutton play everything from Clip Clop Banjo music to 70's disco! Oi! I resemble that remark!
Godzilla Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 (edited) Time to get real on this one. Tony Blackburn - He championed Motown in the 60s AND he's a bona fide Northern Soul singer. Russ Winstanly - He single handedly invented Northern Soul you know. Simon Soussan - Those wonderful, wonderful instrumentals. Brian Rae - Because Mini-Discs rock Ian levine - If there's anyone who hasn't been wound up by the first four, he's your man. Checkmate Godz Edited March 11, 2006 by Godzilla
pikeys dog Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 First off, I'd step down as DJ, and just promote. Secondly, I'd retire Butch - for the following reason: I'd try and find 7 young DJs - i.e. under 25 so that the crowd could relate to them. Nothing more likely to put the youth off than seeing Montgomery Burns behind the decks.

pikeys dog Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Yep, but when you get that line-up and add serious amounts of alcohol, it soon turns into a Nightmare....

Think about other Dj based scenes: Fat Boy Slim, Arthur Baker, Pete Tong, Jeff Mills, Graham Park, grand wizard Theadore etc etc - all same age as Butch or older, all draw young crowds Re the Dream Team, It's a temptaion for us all to list our mates isnt it?
Guest Bearsoul Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Oi! I resemble that remark! WHAT ABOUT 'SIR JIMMY SAVILLE' OBE WHO REPUTEDLY WAS THE FIRST TO USE TWO DECKS????
