Whilst at work today I picked up a holiday brochure to flick through, whilst working at Twickenham station. The holiday brochure was for Cleethorpes (Grimsby & The North East Lincolnshire Wolds), there were a couple of things that made me laugh in it.

Firstly the following statement, and I quote: "Located within the resort of Cleethorpes, the Winter Gardens has provided entertainment for over 50 years, so put your dancing shoes and take a trip down memory lane." Funny, how they are promoting something that they plan on knocking down??

The second thing was the adverts for events during April 2006, sandwiched between the Cleethorpes Dance Festival and the Continental Market was: Northern Soul, Winter Gardens, Kingsway, Cleethorpes. It was also listed for August. Not to mention the Scooter Rally listed for July.

There I was thinking Northern Soul (not to mention Scooter Rallies) was an underground scene. How wrong I was, all you need is to promote your next event as a tourist attraction.

P.S. This is not a dig at the promoters, I'm assuming the council own the Winter Gardens and they've added it to the listings. It just made me smile at work that's all.

Take the M6 into Wigan and come off at junction 25, hang a left at the first roundabout onto the A49 (Warrington Road) and carry on until you hit the next roundabout. Go all the way round and as you come to the other side of the roundabout you'll see a large black, 12ft x 7ft metal sign/sculpture with 3 dancers and the words Northern Soul cut out of it.

I don't know who the dancers are though!

I heard a story about one of the 'chalet rallys' in the scooter scene that at the Pontins or whatever, there were posters up prior to it inviting Joe Public in to come and look at the mods.

Apparently the winter gardens are taking bookings until 2008, or until they decide to either carry on with the main ballroom or turn it into a cinema. So it looks like it will remain open til then (fingers crossed) The present people that currently own the winter gardens have stated that whatever they decide (the builders) , they are looking to building a new venue somewhere in the Cleethorpes area!!! on the same sort of lines as the present gardens. The actual northern soul advertisement has been advertised for years in the tourist book, as has the bags ball? and scooter rally, and I dont really think it has had a negative effect on either the northern or the scooter scene. Just means there is more opportunity for us lot to get a B and B when the tourists leave town, cos they realise that a bunch of us nutters are on the way
