Rummaged through some old records that haven't been played in a while today and came across a batch by The Astors on Stax. Really enjoyed playing them and got me thinking, what a great group they were. In reality I know absolutely nothing about them. How many 45's did they cut for Stax and did they record for any other labels ?

The ones I have are :

Candy US Stax demo

Just enough to hurt me US Stax issue

In the twighlight zone US Stax idemo

More power to you US Stax demo

I remember that Candy was issued on red UK Atlantic and before that was it Black Atlantic or London ?

Also, I remember having Twilight Zone on UK Stax.

Anyone out there have any additional info on this great group.

Cheers

John

Doesn't appear that they cut much more as a recent compilation of theirs in the US had to be shared with another group. Jealous that you have Just Enough To Hurt Me, been after that for a while and just cannot find a decent copy. Anyone?

Ted,

Couldn't remember - knew it was a yellow demo - that's why I was thinking London or Atlantic.

Paul Aisbett sold me his Stax US demo when he picked up the London demo !

Take care

John

Never heard of this gaining a UK release.

Sure your memory isnt playing tricks on you?

Calling Pete Smith!

Only "Candy" came out here, first on Black and in 68/69 on red Atlantic. Suprised it was never re-issued in the mid 70s (Candy) when they were putting out all kinds of 60s and northern tunes.

This is one I'm very clear on and I do remenber it going to Pete Lawson on one of the many many occasions that he (and others) raped my collection back in the 80's

Blue UK Stax - someone help me please - had this, Linda Lindell and Derek Martin all on Blue UK Stax - all i've got left is the Linda Lindell - and incidentally I understand that there is an alternate take of this on a studio cut - Polydor ?

Do all the copies of Twilight Zone have bad sound quality? Mine looks mint but doesn't sound as good as I would want it to. Fantastic tune, young Isaac Hayes on vocals, as you've probably heard the story from Keb.

Heikki,

Just to clarify a view points: Twilight Zone sounds much better on vinyl, the styrene copies even in mint are not the greatest sound quality.

Twilight Zone was certainly never issued in the UK, only "Candy" saw UK release

Astors members were six Memphis High school kids originally called The Chips first release 1961 later became four members Curtis Johnson (lead and second tenor) , Richard Harris, Sam Byrnes (baritone), Eddie Stanback (lead)..in 1963 they changed their name to to the Astors. Sorry no Isaac Hayes.vocal involvement according to my info.
