Guest studmeister Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Here's the plan. Go into hospital for operation on my shoulder. Take along laptop PC with 700 tracks and play some great sounds whilst recovering. Good idea me thinks. Wake up from the operation only to find my left arm in a foam sling with velco straps and the sling is tied to a post above and behind the bed to keep my arm extended.. Nurse visits to check I'm OK and asks if I need anything. "Can you get my laptop and plug it in" I says. Laptop begins to power up and nurse leaves. Now anyone familiar with Windows knows that one of the first things that happens is that it asks you to press the Ctl, Alt and Delete keys at the same time. Unfortunately Ctl and Alt keys were bottom left and Delete was upper right on the keyboard. Now some people may have a finger span that will stretch across the width of the laptop but I don't. My right little finger was on Delete and my thumb on Alt, but still an inch short (story of my life!) from reaching Ctl key. I know, I'll call the nurse back!! Press Call button, nurse comes back, explain problem." OK on 3 you press Delete, and I'll do Ctl & Alt". After a couple of tries it worked. Laptop boots up, click on Real Media player, soul music begins to fill the room. Great. Now my laptop has an annoying bug that the graphics card suffers a mental breakdown, whilst the rest of the PC is OK, causing loss of display. As you may guess, this happened 15 minutes into my soul session. The resolution is to restart the PC. PC restarts, only to arrive at "press the Ctl, Alt and Delete keys!. Now do I call the nurse again, No me thinks, I'll undo the straps get my left arm out of the sling and no-one will know. Prior to the operation the anaesthetist had mentioned about a nerve blocker. Now removing my arm from the sling I understood what he meant. My left arm had the control and sensation of a falling steel bar (totally out of control and liable to hurt somebody if it hits you). Unable to control the arm, I place the left fingers using my right hand over the Ctl & Alt keys, then quickly move my right hand over the Delete key. Hey presto it worked. PC boots up, now right hand fights with left arm to get it back in the sling. Five minutes later all done. Soul music blasting out, TV's on with Mute sound. Whose a clever boy then!!!!. Graphics card now decides to have another mental breakdown. PC is shutdown never to be restarted all day. Thank goodness I was released 24 hours later and get home to play some music. Andy
