Simsy Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 just carrying on from the top 10 crossover records what category would you put ty karim lightin up in? Wasn't sure if the definition had been fully agreed upon...
Gene-r Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 To put a finer point on it, of the two versions: 1. Car-A-Mel (1967) - Northern 2. Romark (1973) - Modern
Chalky Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 To put a finer point on it, of the two versions: 1. Car-A-Mel (1967) - Northern 2. Romark (1973) - Modern Car-A-Mel has two label colours if I remember rightly, pink and the more common orange. Wasn't sure if the definition had been fully agreed upon... more or less from what I read......
Simsy Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 more or less from what I read...... Just seems everyone thinks this is the later 60's/early 70's stuff . What about the earlier sixties white stuff that wasn't strictly soul, that was played. How's that classified?

Guest Baz Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Pop that's crossed over then ... You could call any record that has come from the States or any where for that matter crossover as its had to crossover the sea to get here Cant see why there has to be a nailed on decission to what crossover is, its juat a term we use for soul music when it came to its stage in life where it was 'crossing over' from the typical four four beat, is how i see it anyway, you could call things like Nathan Williams, Guitar Ray, Buddy Smith, Robert Tanner ect ect crossover

But on closer inspection and for the point of discussion I was interested to know more about the early stuff.

Surely thats in another class of its own then, its 60's soul/R&B IMO i mean we could be here all night trying to decipher what records have 'crossed over' well thats crossover because it came from the mod scene ect...just a loosely used term to put late 60's to early/mid seventys in a category IMO at the end of the day its all soul well apart from some of that disco and pop pap

But even there you've said 'late 60's'. No one (still) has really answered the Tony Galla question thus far ...

Tony Galla just uptempo northern.....never in a million years crossover. The crossover we refer to has as far as I know been answered on the other topic
Simsy Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Tony Galla just uptempo northern.....never in a million years crossover. The crossover we refer to has as far as I know been answered on the other topic 'uptempo northern' notice there wasn't a mention of soul there. And that's because Tony Galla isn't a soul record it's a sixties beat mod thing that has crossed over to the ns scene. That's the whole point crossover isn't just that disco shite, there's good cross over as well. In Luv? No but I'm very fond of you.

Pardon my ignorance, but were does the Mod thing come into this..............Tony Galla was a late Wigan/Stafford sound, to my knowledge & I could be wrong, this was never played any where in the UK other than on the Northern scene until this point, granted Im sure that since then it has had plays on the Mod scene, but I'm pretty sure that not before. Russ

jocko Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Does it have to have been played in a mod club to be a mod record then? Only as much as it has to sound like a crossover record to actually be a crossover record, I have said for ages too much genrification is bad for the scene but with your Tony Galla confusion I am changing my mind, I hope Ady has told you what a Northern Soul record is before Saturday!! Yours mischievously Jock

Ian what the hell are you on about, crossover has been defined earlier......months ago, surely you understand that......Tony Galla......crossover.........are you on a wind up.

Yours mischievously Jock Yeah, to be fair the club question I knew the answer to before I asked it. Don't you worry about Saturday, I've spent one or two hours in that place to know what's acceptable to play and what not. Rob messer played Tony Galla in there not so long back. This white organ number being a little different to a soul dancer with horns etc. Ian what the hell are you on about, crossover has been defined earlier......months ago, surely you understand that......Tony Galla......crossover.........are you on a wind up. Months ago? Year's ago white poppy records (amongst others) had been described as such. If everyone wants late sixtes funky souly type stuff as crossover only and that's it, then that's fine by me. Accepted majority NS definition: Crossover; Late Sixties and early Seventies, records that don't fit the old style stomper beat, but don't fit comfortably into the Modern scene. The difficulty with Crossover is just that though, because it doesn't fit into either scene entirely it gets played on both, so just blurs the descriptions even more. Non soul police general; Crossover is a term used to describe artists of a certain style or genre whose popularity crosses the considered boundaries of where the music of that style or genre is normally found. "Crossing over" is a marketing term, and is always a movement toward the mainstream. Appropriation of a new style by combining elements of different genres in order to appeal to a wider audience. Simsy Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Borrowed from 'Top 10' thread. Have to agree whith you there Simsy..as far back as torch and wigan thay were classifying stuff like Dusty springfild (Whats it gonna be), and G. Pitney..new white soul..but at the end of the day it`s crossover...To me anything that has come out of the (chart`s) nown artist , from the 60`s through to the pressent day, and finds a home in N.S..unless it has another genre, ie, soulfull house..then thats the genre i call it...
Russ Vickers Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Does it have to have been played in a mod club to be a mod record then? Yes.......I think. How would you know it was a Mod record if it didnt appal to MODS. Russ

Guest Johnny One Trout Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 White pop, pseudo funk, slow soul whatever it's nothing to get crossover
Simsy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Yes.......I think. How would you know it was a Mod record if it didnt appal to MODS. Russ Sounds like you've never been a mod Russ. sixties beat mod thing? you mean this was played in mod club first? think not, first played in soul club? It still isn't crossover. No one said it was played in a mod club first. Said it was mod sounding. Not crossover by your definition. Not soul either. White pop, pseudo funk, slow soul whatever it's nothing to get crossover That's brilliant.
Chalky Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Not crossover by your definition. Not soul either. Don't think it's crossover by anyones definition except yours.
Simsy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Don't think it's crossover by anyones definition except yours. That record aside, it would depend on the definintion of Crossover. And round we go again Don't spose you'll be at the 100, coz I could buy you a pint a bitter and we could have a fight about it then.
