Always good to here a soulful version of a MOR classic.

Whats your favourite?

Attached is a version of Jealous Guy. Sounds not that great as its a live recording.

Production wise its a bit off the wall, but what a voice!

I don't know if this record is that well known, so pint of Stella to first person to identify singer.

By the time I get to Phoenix (she'll be rising) by The Magnificent Men

Brilliant! Then again so is Glenn Campbell's.

Kenneth may be able to help with a soundfile...

In the spirit of the thread I'd have to say Isaac Hayes "By the time I get to Phoenix" - awesome.. Glen Campbell's claim to soul fame was playing guitar on Gloria Jones "Tainted Love"

I imagine Glen Campbell may have played on a lot more soul stuff than we'll ever know. If memory serves, wasn't he one of the most in demand sesion guitarists on the West Coast? He certainly played on loads of Phil Spector stuff and also toured and played with the Beach Boys (Good Vibrations was one of his sessions, ditto Pet Sounds).

Personally I love what he did with those Jim Webb songs. A big, big talent.

Billy Stewart's "Secret Love" - that's a Doris Day song isn't it?

Billy Stewart's version of Summertime is brilliant too. He did an album of standards which is worth getting.

How about Clara Wards version of "Smile" also on Verve? Below, Jo and Simon 'cover up' a MOR artist who had the audacity to record a version of Dreamlover's 'You Gave Me Somebody To Love'....

I like Bobby Lee Fears version of Pat Boone's 'exodus', Della Reese version of 'It was a very good year', Micky Denton 'nature boy', Carl Henry Hall 'Summertime', Grady Tate 'Moondance' & Caprells version of 'close your eyes' & ted taylor's slower version too.

& of course Nina Simoner could sing more or less anything & make it soulful IMO.
