Guest Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Ok so Trevski asks about unscrupulous sellers and somewhere theres talk of a soul museum?. Ebay are making pots of brass and a small but not insignificant amount of that is through vinyl sales! I like many others say (Bast**** )ide forgotten about ebays charges when they finally arrive! So Soul Source this is a club and as a club it was formed to be run by its creators ,mediators ,and members! for the Benefit and Betterment of Knowledge,Care and Giving of soul to Everyone and Anyone who wishes to be a part of it and want it. The Membership must by now cover every profession trade and skill that any and all advice could be sought from so- What i suggest is this - Soul Source find a way of getting together all the servers, systems and Technohow to get an Auction sight up and running! All Soul source members at switch on list up sales on it You wouldnt lose out on bidders with proper advertising rather you have now 2 auction sights to look at Soulsource create a back up fund and launch free listings for X mths ex! Now this bit i know is hard i know but boycott American sellers unless they are on our site of course?? let some of the US buyers in this period grab real bargains ,the result would be that the sellers would find that the quality records are been snapped up by fellow US sellers who are only going to sell them on anyway!! and for peanuts !! Then realises the only place to put this record on is Soul Source if he wants the best price for it + Being a greedy US being he knows its free as well ! Soul source members now know that The greedy EBeeans arent putting quite as much in there Swiss bank acounts and the whole soul Vinyl sales auctions are now been run by the Club. A fund is set up that after running costs amounts are banked into all above board and done proper, The fund in question like the Globe yes youve guessed it ???? Have a Blue Peter poundomitrometer so all can see the progress of the fund that has just one main aim To Build it !! If the lands totally unavailable and it just cant be then ! buy a piece of land where we can build it. Source the original drawings of the Empress, get funding back together,Search out lottery grants etc and on the chosen day at sunrise take the Shaker oath and join and rub shoulders with Groundworkers,Brickies Plasterers,Electricians ,Lawyers ,Barristers , Doctors,Hairdressers etc etc all with a fresh loaf of bread and cheese and perhaps just a little cider (can Shakers drink cider?) And set to with a joyous fervour of achieving the goal of having the last bulb in by midnight!!! Seriously now youve got a proper museum thats far from been an half hour walkthrough look at that look at this experience, THIS IS THE REAL DEAL! By this time some of the higherarchy are making a damm good living and why not But everyone can see that we as soul source members are also getting something from giving the listings to our club! The Fund would continue to grow and perhaps People like James Brown would consider it a privallage to give us a gig there? The fund would probably continue to secure its future even running just one museum nighter a month and in the meantime other acts have a top venue where people can dance and get down on a top dancefloor with springs adding more to the fund.(remember theres not many chairs) And getting back to Trevskis dillema to unambiguous sellers they can go into the Special Re-issue auctions run on Soul Source all above board or ebay? and as for ebay that becomes the Radio Rentals boxes. Rome wasnt built in a day but they built it all the same!
Martint Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 any comments? Shane what, like something like www.record-dealer.com ? I'm open to suggestions in terms of collaboration, free use etc. In fact I have previously posted on here offering 100% lifetime free use to soul sourcers and a number of people have taken me up on it. I'm quite happy to extend that to anyone else for the time being. I have the site, I have records on it, and I want to get more people using it. I'm not expecting to make any money out of it for a long time if ever. In the meantime it does all you need and more. You will notice that the site has detailed categories for northern soul including clear sections for boots and reissues, UK or US etc etc. and categories can be changed and amended very easily. Martin
Dave Abbott Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 any comments? Shane Yes. Cant actually work out if it's serious...
Guest Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Yes. Cant actually work out if it's serious... The Idea is that unlike Ebay thanking you for all the money they make off you by giving you a 5p listing day once a month or 1p gallery WOW! But rather create a Charitable cause where of course it has its running costs Management Structure etc as in any other business that seeks a goal But our goal would be to not just fill the pockets of high faceless management (ebay) but a rather more accountable Guardian Structure that in the main has the same intention as in any charitable cause, Whereby part of the success becomes the fund, and of course initially that may be small and dependant on expert and professional guidance and goodwill , All Managers Treasurers etc sign upto a Soul Charter that binds them to be straight up Solid Soul Executers and managers of the fund, Eventually with good fortune a whole company structure could evolve giving new employment to many .And who for that are now giving back to The soul community OUR venue, It may take a while and invole many but i have had 3 figure seller charges and there is some serious brass made off our backs if you think about it? Once established we may well pull in other vinyl sales not just Soul related all helping to build a Fund for the soul community and the betterment of it in what ever way the community sees fit as using that fund. As i say only an Acorn?

Rome wasnt built in a day but they built it all the same! I've tried this with my site www.soulbid.com, did you support it in the end I couldn't afford to keep it going, Ebay is too BIG, no USA dealer will come on board, tried hundreds of them, it wasn't costing them a penny to list only pay commission on successful sales. I had a membership of over 1000's compared to Ebay's millions. Even the likes of JM and PB didn't bother to support it this was before they had there own in-house aauction sites, the only main dealer to support the site was Joe Dunlop, PS indicated that he would list, never did They made there own choices, just like the masses that go to EBAY. What is soul-source membership? if it's not in the millions, which we know it ain't, then your idea is just a dream. That's not say that there are no alternatives to EBAY it's just they are so small, it's like comparing your local corner shop to Tesco's. Edited February 17, 2006 by Netspeaky
Pete S Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 the only main dealer to support the site was Joe Dunlop, PS indicated that he would list, never did Well what a surprise, I should have guessed it was all MY fault, it always is. I was the only one, was I? B*llocks.

Pete, I'm not blaming you for it's failure, I'm just pointing out the difficulties that I encountered, and you did say you would list but for whatever reason you never got around to it.

Dave Abbott Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 As i say only an Acorn? Like the idea and the nethusiasm but unfortuanelty i cant see it growing past an acorn. Ebay rules i am afraid to say and its far too big to go against. Best bet is to see what Martin can offer through his site and set you goals from a tree to maybe the twig.

Martin Sorry Martin i hadnt seen it ! ive just had a look in and ive got to take my hat off to you! You have done an excellent site It looks really well and has everything in place just as you say.it looks like all it needs now is good support from buyers and sellers to build it up. And again appologies to netspeaky also for i had not found Soulbid previously. And as both sites and others are trying to get a foothold there is as you say the mighty ebay holding them back. And because ebay are so big you get the feeling that the mountains too high to climb. But this is where a part donatable amount of all transactions to a club fund may help turn some of that business away from them,Especially if the awareness of what its goals and intentions are. With good promotion and a strong enough will i think it could have a chance to make a fight of it. It needs that commitment to say no to ebay, and for the americans to realize that the only way to sell to UK buyers for a good price is through the Fund sight. After all one thing we have got in abundance allready here is Soul and records! The american market if our commitment is strong enough would soon latch on, and then youve opened a leak into ebay, Its a question of Good support ,willpower ,commitment and determination to smash that dominence held by the big boy and Turn that Tap on If Martins site had real support it wouldnt go unnoticed by the US sellers for long, David did over Goliath and Blue peter did it with milk bottle tops!
Martint Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 well it's something of a snowball thing - the site is extremely well linked into google, and so the more items get listed, the more people come across them, and the more people join and the more items get listed etc etc etc. For example, I have demo of In my tenement by Roosevent Grier up for sale. Try going to google and typing roosevelt grier northern soul 45 and see what comes back. Like I said, I've no expectation of making a bean for a long time if ever, but now that most of the hard work has been done and it is up and running and soundly hosted, I'm very happy to give free unlimited use to any SS members for life. It might come in handy if you wanted to offer a piece at auction to other members (while also potentially getting outside interest), or just having your lists of records for sale visible and findable on the internet (as records can be listed as auction or as set sale). I also recently uploaded pete's catalogue to the site and can do the same for anyone else using my bulk loader software (or you can do it yourself if you are reasonably handy at figuring out excel etc). All free. Just register then send me a PM on here. I have a European (non soul) dealer who will be adding 5000 non soul items next week- all helps to make it more visible. Martin

And the humble buyer who likes trawling all those us ebay sellers who dont know theyre selling soul records.Once a record is on a proper flagged Soul auction/set sale the price will likely rise not good for anyone budget buying. Where would you build the new "Casino" Wigan or London? what about other now demolished venues? Hasnt the scene changed since then, in that its not centred on one main weekly outlet, and with an older average age people less likely to travel too far. You have an option on ebay to showcase your store. JM through hard work and good marketing seems to get best of ebay, gemm and his own site. danny d

For me soul specific auction sites are great as far as they go but they are different from ebay. Soul auction sites are like trawling boxes at soul dos Ebay is more like a record fair. I know where I've got the biggest bargains

One because it was listed as the other side (they're coming to take me away) and the other because it was a TV related novelty. I think I paid like $3 each for them. Having said that, I couldn't believe how little I paid for that Chandlers in the correct section the other night
