I'm just interested to see how many records people have in their collections. Instead of just asking, thought it would be easier to do a poll. This is not to advertise peoples collections to unwanted attention.

I was wondering what's the average number of 45s for a DJ? I'm not talking about Collector/Djs or Dealer/Djs, obviously collectors have hundreds to thousands and dealers too, but for sale. Is there anyone out there who only DJs and maintains a collection for that purpose only. I'm not talking about the contents of a playbox either (around 200) but the 'squad' that you select your playbox from. I'm guessing it's maybe 500 and changing all the time?

For me it's like an addiction, no matter how many 45's/LP's you have you always crave another. I won't disclose the amount I own (it's tantamount to discussing your sexual fantasies to total strangers) but like a well known record dealer told me way back.."It's Not The Amount Of Records You Own, That Counts, But The Pleasure You Derive From Them".........

Good topic this, i dread to think the number of records i've had through my hands over the years some big titles too, but that's part of the game i guess, selling something for pennies way back which is now worth a small fortune or in many cases a huge one...lol.

Quality is the issue with me rather than quantity, i've forgotton some of the tunes i've let go and suddenly now find myself buying back the ones i regret selling that i can remember at least. I have a book case full of 45's, several loose piles (OF RECORDS....LOL) and four DJ type boxes, have a good source for play stuff, turn records around, sell on, swap, trade, beg, steal and borrow, have a never ending want's list and sod all money to buy them but we carry on don't we? As with Brett's comments records give me pleasure, infact this music gives me pleasure so there is also a couple of large CD cabinets full upstairs, you can't ever own it all on vinyl but can enjoy as much as you can get on whatever format.I tend to rotate the two 100 hundred count DJ boxes i take out sorry took out...lol select tunes to work in with the venue, carry the tunes which make up the foundation of a spot, always include new additions when possible, i'm content with rotating and selecting from perhaps a 1000 records, and can call on pockets of my collection as a back up.Other sections of the collection are private and are simply just that my collection.

Brilliant fun though.

I do enjoy looking through other mates records, probably more so than dealers boxes. The reason being that they've nearly always got records that you don't, or they seem to have records that you've recently seen on dealers lists. So this way instead of buying something blind you can listen to the record to form your own opinion, as to whether somethings worth buying or not. Does this make sense or am I just rambling again? whistling.gif

I congratulate those who've got 1000+ records, not for the value, but for having somewhere to store them without the wife moaning about them! :sleep3:

My husband is very lucky: we never argued regarding the number of records he owns.....

but only because his collection is smaller than mine!!!! :sleep3:

The key here is to have a wife thats into the music my wife calls the collection the other woman and as long as 'she' the record collection is bigger than her then their's no competition! so the bigger the better needless to say money permitting a free reign and a good time is had by all. I have thousands of records along with thousands of memories to go with all of them.

my wife calls it living history when playing them to the kids, In a school assembly two years ago the children were asked to go home and ask there parents/grandparent about some thing that happened in the 50's & 60's my youngest son stood up and declared Buddy Holly died in a plane crash and my daughter aged 9 announced that Brenda Holloway recorded Stay in School on Tamla White lable in about 1965 only to be disgusted that the head teacher didnt know what a white lable was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My theory is the kids will leave home soon (2 down 2 to go )freeing up more room for the records.

I maintain a box soley for dj'ing, but it's quallity over quantity for me now. And the box just get's smaller, as everything that I hear and must have, seems to be £1000 +

I always did have expensive taste, so I have to sell, in order to buy. You can only play about 24 records in a spot. So I can't see the point of dragging 500 around with you. Besides, I like to keep changing em, keeps the spot fresh.

Just bought an 80 box, but it only holds around 60. There was so much packing in the old box it looked silly when open. This will probably do me for my entire collection, unless I win the lottery, and can afford to actually keep some.

I am going to be stuffed if there is a big drop in prices though.
